I'm not sure we're giving enough respect to Pat Smith. First 4x. That was a very big accomplishment.4 points

Mad props to all posters on this thread. Getting to a second page of legit posts on Indiana-Maryland is a true tribute to the board's members as true fans.4 points

There is a thread on HR about Iowa slipping to number 3 in WIN Magazine's tournament power index behind Missouri. I still have Iowa #2 across the board using Intermat, Flo and Wrestlestat individual rankings combined with expected placement and advancement points (no bonus points in my totals). And in one case (the only case that matters? Intermat) they even increased their lead over Missouri by 0.8 points. Some of the responses on HR focus on the "fact" that Missouri always underperforms their seed, so it is OK. I am not so sure that is the hook Hawkeye fans want to hang their hat on, though. Yes, Missouri tends to underperform when their seeds are higher, but then who doesn't? You can also argue they were over-seeded in 2018 and 2021 as a result of being in a "weaker" conference, but that is cherry picking or else how do you explain 2017 when they had their highest average finish while only missing their seed by a half spot? Regardless, this year their seeds are a result of this year's results, not some perceived historical bias. And the expected points methodology accounts for under-performance on average at higher seeds and over-performance at lower seeds. But the real point here is nothing has changed for Iowa. There is a gap between them and PSU in one direction with a smaller gap between them and Missouri in the other direction.2 points

Thanks for the props WKN.....I'm not sure how many I have....I do know most of their contents have been view ated least once, a some many times. I couldn't watched them all again in the rest of my lifetime. Started "filming" in 1970 first at the 1970 Midlands, then in 1971 The USA vs. USSR also at McGaw Hall ('70 Midland's were actually at maybe Harper Jr. College that year) Most of my crucial stuff that was super 8 I transferred to video while the getting was good. Most of the events I've been to I have filmed or video'd......42 NCAA's, maybe 26 Big Ten's, 17 World Cups, MANY college matches from Iowa Public Television....3 duals on each tape/dvd. I have tapes of World Championships, Tblisi, and more. Some that I treasure most though are of clinics I've been to. I started my collection as a very young coach....they were invaluable in the development of my coaching, teaching (Physical Education), and doing wrestling clinics. I'll end by simply saying ....I wouldn't trade my teaching and coaching career for anything, and my library helped me immensely. I'd take a pic of my shelves of videos, but my office is a mess right now, and I have videos in the living room, in my weight room/wrestling room.....they are not all on the shelves. The bookcase goes to the ceiling, and has maybe 8 shelves, and they are all full. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it......I like Wrestling Arenas library by the way!! Good Stuff!! (Hope I proof read this good enough because when I click "Submit Reply" the 15 minute timer starts)2 points

He didn’t get a chance to wrestle MVB , Goodale loves the van brills , mike lost the wrestle off to white last year and they stuck with MVB ,…Seabass transferring in then saying he would go 133 back to back years only to end up going 141 really screwed Alvarez, the first season at 133 it what it is ,but the fact the Rutgers coach’s had him try and make it again last season is insane , Alvarez has a redshirt available but instead had him cutting insane amounts of weight then threatened to kick him off the team for not making it …the whole situation is sad and a waste of High AA talent …obviously a lot of blame is on Sammy but Rutgers coaches have some egg on their face too , they haven’t done much right since with Alvarez since the day Seabass transferred in2 points

I’m in favor of needing to score near fall in order to get the RT point2 points
-
If we remove the riding time point, I also wouldn't be too upset2 points
-
The problem is that technically the top guy is trying to score by securing riding time. So therefore riding is not stalling. I hate it too, but apparently we need a rule change to address it.2 points

My YouTube channel is Wrestling Arena..I have the 1930s to 1950s NCAAs..I plan to upload many others(sorry for any delay)…I also uploaded the Darryl Burley vs Mike Land 1979 NCAA finals.. Mike Land had an 84 match win streak and was the 2x defending national champion and lost to true freshman Darryl Burley…. I have collected all these since 1999…I found most of them from contacts on the message boards..I thought the people on the message boards should also see them2 points

Undoubtedly the coaches are tracking his weight at practice daily and realize he is struggling. Some guys are like Jordan Oliver and can cut insane amounts of weight in a short time. Some are better off wrestling fat and happy like Vincenzo Joseph. No doubt Alvarez wants to fit in where it is best for the team, but he is also likely pretty miserable from struggling with weight his whole career. I think the coaches need to take that decision out of his hands for both his healthy and his happiness instead of being mad that he can't starve and dehydrate himself well enough. (Now if he's been sneaking out for burgers and milkshakes the day before a meet then I take back all of the above)2 points

Many teams only have X amount of cash or scholarship equivalency to apply towards scholarships. So any savings by taking advantage of instate tuition can be applied to other wrestlers .1 point

A couple of my favorites are Dave Schultz clinics mostly on leg wrestling and transitions into hip tips and bars. Also Terry and Troy Steiner teaching every area of wrestling. When I was a young coach (1975) I went to a Granby Camp that I got maybe 4 or 5 crucial techniques from. I've also been to all the FILA Clinics that were at the World Cups (17 years)....back when the clinicians were Yuri Shakmuradov, Ivan Yarigan, Stan Dziedzic, Gable, Zoogalov Abdulbakov maybe too. One year there were 2 high school kids on the mat during the clinic....they grew up to be pretty good....they were from Mobridge, S.D......Jim and Bill Scherr....lol....and now friends of mine.1 point

Before I "invest" the entirety of my retirement savings in this incredible opportunity, I have one question: Isn't the phrase "once-in-a-lifetime memories" an oxymoron in this case? Not that there's anything wrong with that. I've actually had a few memories that I'll never forget but none of them involved anything vaguely like this.1 point

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/speaker-of-the-house-ousted-motion-to-vacate-rcna64902 How a speaker of the House can be ousted with a 'motion to vacate' Speaker Kevin McCarthy made concessions to the far-right to get his job, including changing the rules to allow any member of Congress to force a vote to remove him. Jan. 10, 2023, 11:20 AM PST By Kyle Stewart WASHINGTON — In his bid to become speaker of the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy agreed to a number of concessions to secure the support of Republicans who originally opposed him. One was a rule change to allow just a single member to try to force him from office. Under the new House rules passed Monday, only one member of Congress — Democrat or Republican — is needed to bring a "motion to vacate," which forces a vote on removing the speaker. That would need only a simple majority of the House to pass to oust McCarthy. This spells it out in very clear language. mspart1 point

Stalling on top guy should be "not trying to score or improve their position". Not trying for the fall should be in the list of stalling. Improving your position is getting the bottom guy to his back. From there it is to pin. This does not incentivize the top wrestler to do anything other than stay in the middle and STALL. mspart1 point
-
What stands out to me more are the "general purpose stalling rules" mentioned first. It doesn't seem like those are applied effectively nor correctly... Considered stalling when "Attempting to avoid wrestling" (5.7.1). "Offensive and defensive wrestlers shall make an attempt to sustain active wrestling and remain in the competition circle" (5.7.11). "Action is to be maintained throughout the match by wrestlers staying near the center of the mat and wrestling aggressively in all positions."1 point

In a lot of the places the AD didn't want a women's program. For them it is more work and no extra money. There definitely is no clerical help. I have seen some with paid assistants. There are so many that don't want to or refuse to spend a few seasons as an Assistant Coach, and that is where most of this training would occur.1 point

lee has not done near enough internationally to even be in the discussion as greatest Iowa wrestler ever... not even close... anyone claiming such should have their hair rustled and sent out to clean up the backyard... sadly, i am not sure he will ever do enough in real wrestling to even warrant a side note... i would love to be wrong on this...1 point

After taking Lee down, Ramos threw Lee for a 6 point move and was very close to the pin. He was up 8-1 but Lee came back. Lee is definitely vulnerable if a #9 guy can do that. Maybe Glory can take him out1 point
