I was playing around with the Wrestlestat dual comparison feature the other day with Iowa and OSU and they predicted an Endene major over Merrill.  That seemed a little bold, but maybe not outrageously so.  I then looked at Iowa-Iowa state, Iowa-Nebraksa, Iowa-PSU, ect.  Wrestlestat is really high on Endene, because they have him a winner in all these duals.  Any chance he actually wins all these?

Massoma Endene (Iowa) over Rocky Elam (Iowa State) DEC 12 - 7

Massoma Endene (Iowa) over Camden McDanel (Nebraska) MD 14 - 4

Massoma Endene (Iowa) over Cody Merrill (Oklahoma State) MD 14 - 4

Massoma Endene (Iowa) over Josh Barr (Penn State) MD 13 - 4

Massoma Endene (Iowa) over Mac Stout (Pittsburgh) DEC 12 - 6

No, no shot.  It's not the 90's.  The gap between D1 and D3 today in wrestling is far and wide.  Feel free to bookmark this and I'll gladly eat crow but people are living in the past.  He'll be a bubble wrestler just to make the tournament

He just beat #77 Bellarmine wrestler 3-0.   I watched the match.  Based on what I saw, he beats none of those listed.

Dispassionate Penn State grad and fan.

Well Merrill just beat #75 5-3 and lost to #48.

This is funny though since wrestlestat only has Endeme rated #152

I suspect what is going on is that Wrestlestat has the data from Endene’s Wartburg season that are being used by the algorithm.  In those he was undefeated January 2023 and scored bonus points at a 80+% clip.  No one I am compared him too has any common opponents with him so the algorithm thinks he is a badass.  I couldn’t find a matchup wrestlestat didn’t favor him in.  He was favored over Novak and Little too which was a clean sweep of Wrestlestat’s top 5 and 7 of their top 10.

What’s interesting is that Wrestlestat has him ranked 152 with 1200 elo points.  I suspect they manually set his elo there for rankings purposes to start his D1 career.  Lots of other new wrestlers are tied with him at #152 with 1200 Elo including his teammate Harvey Ludington.  If I sub Ludington into the lineup for these duals Wrestlestat predicts Barr, Novak, Elam, McDanel, and Merrill to win by fall and Little and Stout to win by TF.

Endene’s god status in the Wrestlestat prediction algorithm has no impact on its individual ranking because of the 1200 Elo.  It also doesn’t impact Iowa’s tournament ranking where Wrestlestat has Iowa #3 behind PSU (1) and Nebraska (2).  The tournament ranking uses Endene’s individual rank of #152 for this and gives Iowa 0 NCAA team points for him just like other freshman Karl Voinovich and Penn State’s Marcus Blaze, PJ Duke, and Connor Mirasola.  However, it is probably skewing Iowa’s dual ranking which works off these simulated duals.  Wrestlestat predicts Iowa to win every possible dual except Nebraska which has them ranked #2.

The PSU-Iowa dual has Iowa winning 22-17 with Ayala pinning Blaze, Van Ness TF Voinovich, Williams TF Duke, Endene’s MD Barr, and Keuter MD Mirasola all impacted by uncertainty from a small number of D1 matches.  These matches account for 19 of Iowas predicted 22 team points.  Even if these matches flip Iowa has a good chance at getting more than 3 team points as Wrestlestat is predicting upsets of sorts for PSU at 125 and 184.  They have Lilledahl over Peterson even though the match went the other way last year and Welsh over Ferrari despite having Ferrari ranked #1.

It’s funny because Wrestlestat predicts this to be one of Endene’s closest matches.

Massoma Endene (Iowa) over Andrew Liber (Bellarmine) DEC 11 - 7

I suspect this is because it now has that result to use.  I didn’t simulate this before the match.  If I sub in Ludington who has the same weight class rank as Endene (152) this is the result.

Andrew Liber over Harvey Ludington MD 12 - 0

Looks like they have PSU Blaze as a separate profile than high schooler Blaze so he doesn’t get any credit for beating Matt Ramos at the Clarion open.

Endene will be lucky to win one of those, and he certainly won't beat Elam, Barr, or Stout. I predict he'll get majored, or worse, by at least 2 of those guys.

True. All a guy has to do is go over to Wrestlestat and look up the record of the D3 guys against D1 guys. Even benchwarmer D1 guys usually smoke D2 and D3 guys pretty badly. There are exceptions, of course.

I wasn't impressed with what I saw from Endene in Iowa's first dual. That dude he was wrestling won't even qualify for NCAAs and Endene struggled with him. He's going to have to improve a lot or he's going to get eaten alive when Iowa hits the meat of it's B10 schedule.

Interesting.  I think usually they don’t do that.  High school matches for Lilledahl, Braeden Davis, Hayden Cunningham, Tyler Kayak, and Levi Haines on their collegiate profile.  This might not change their dual prediction as it likely would still have Ayala winning and changing that result from a fall to a Dec would not change their dual outcome of their predicted dual.

Benchwarmer D1 guys might smoke mid to low D3 AA’s, but they don’t usually smoke multiple time D3 Champs.

A recent example is 3x undefeated D3 champ Joziah Fry.  He started his career at Campbell and as a RS had some decent wins, and also entered the Princeton Open 2 years ago where he beat Sheldon Seymour and Charlie Farmer.

How would that work though?  Do they get dinged for losses as a high schooler?

A less recent example is former UFC fighter Matt Hamill.  He was an undefeated 3x champ in D3. Before transferring to RIT he was the starter at Purdue as a freshman.  At Purdue he was 11-21 and DNP at Big Tens.  He lost to both the 7th and 8th place finishers at Big Tens that season.  At RIT he was 89-3 and never lost in D3 competition.  He was OW twice at NCAAs and one of those years pinned the national champ from the previous year at weight class below him in the finals.  Two of his losses at RIT came his junior year at the Midlands where he went 1-2 beating national qualifier Corey Bell (North Carolina) before losing 8-7 to Matt Greenfield (Central Michigan, 5th seed) who would go on to place 8th at NCAAs that season.  He was then eliminated by Iowa State backup Brad Horton 6-4.  Though Horton was the backup he pinned the starter, Mulvihill (6th seed at Midlands and R12 NCAAs that season), in the tournament and finished 8th.

I don’t think it factors into the individual ranking.  Wrestlestat probably forced the ELO to 1200 for all of them when they started college similar to how Endene’s was set there after moving from D3 to D1.  The high school results probably impact the match predictions similar to how Endene’s D3 matches are clearly impacting the dual predictions. So rankings “dings” would only impact dual team rankings.

While I agree with you Endene has made a U23 freestyle team so he is not your typical D3 stud. I believe he is the only D3 guy to make an age level team while in college.

It's hard to tell just from Wrestlestate, because he never wrestled any D1 guys and had an insane 72-1 record with the 3 titles.

For the record I like D2/D3 competing with D1, and always have. Don't take my criticism of Endene's wrestling as a criticism of D3 in general. I suppose I was just expecting to see a lot more from him.

Quite an illustrative story. One has to wonder how he'd have improved if he'd stayed at Purdue with the better room/coaching? But at least he got to enjoy success, albeit at the D3 level.

I don't remember the 97kg trial being that deep last year especially with Trumble dropping out.

To play devils advocate

Tj Hepburn was D2 and beat Donnie Trasser, Walt Pepperman and James Green in a row at Cliff Keen then lost to Dake 4-0 in the finals.

Strickenberger came from Northwest Kansas technical college and lost in OT in the ncaa quarters and blood round last season and is ranked top 6 this season.

He wrestled at senior nationals this year and was 7th at 97kg. Didn't face any real big names and lost relatively close matches to Ethan Laird who placed 6th and Zane Lanham who finished 3rd.

I don't think he would have been as successful at Purdue. Coaching may have been a bit better, but Purdue finished between 9-11th in the big ten the years that he would have been there.  That was between last and 3rd to last at the time.  I don't think they had any AAs in that period either.

Hamill notably was deaf and I think where he transferred was gave him better academic support and interpreting services.  He also wasn't a top recruit. He had never won states in Ohio with his best finish being 3rd or 4th.  Even in a competitive state like Ohio not many go from not winning state to a winning true freshman campaign in the big ten.  He probably improved a lot after high school.

NYS has a collegiate state championship where all collegiate teams in the state are invited.  I'm pretty sure Hamill won that three times and one year beat Matt Greenberg in the final.  Greenberg would AA at Cornell his senior year, but would have been an underclassman at the time.

Endene had a good day today with beating Cade Lautt by MD and pinning Evan Bates who intermat has ranked one spot ahead of him at #15.  Interestingly the Wrestlestat pre match prediction for Endene-Bates was only a 9-8 win for Endene.  This is the closest I've seen Wrestlestat predict an Endene match.
