Wow, sudden pneumonia that is that severe? For someone seemingly healthy, physically fit, and at a relatively young age like Ben.

Hopefully he pulls through, stark reminder of just how moral we are despite advancements in medicine.

**Caveat, I do not know Ben Askren...or at least I don't talk to Ben Askren, but I know SOME people who are in his circle.

Acute Pneumonia is what I've heard. I asked about the staph infection and apparently he had one, but that's not a pressing issue at the moment.

While acute pneumonia can be deadly, it is GENERALLY only deadly for people who have pre-existing conditions or who are not in good shape.

Knowing what I know of Ben, he could go out and run a marathon(well...just prior to this he could have) and wrestled a full 7 minute match.

I couldn't understand if he was in a medically induced coma, if he was given something to help him sleep or if he was non-responsive from the pneumonia. It sounded like he was unresponsive because the Drs had given him something... but to make VERY-VERY clear, this is someone I know who is tangentially related to AWA and who may or may not have spoken to someone who's in the know.

But the key here and the only thing I got that I have confidence in, is that it was acute pneumonia and the dangers of that are mostly impacted by your pre-existing conditions. So...the type of thing you would think a world class athlete like Ben Askren could suffer from.... but I would suspect the way he lives and how he takes care of himself will make all the difference here.

Here's hoping he's on Flo or something in a couple months talking about how much this sucked and what a fluke thing it was. I wouldn't bet against Askren.

In case no one here has said it, MRSA infections can quickly lead to severe pneumonia, which seems to be the case here.  Prayers for Ben and family.

I did not know that could happen. I guess that would mean it's in his bloodstream. Absolutely terrible.

this was something I was unaware of when it comes to staph/mrsa infections.... really hope they can get this moving in a positive direct ASAP...

— MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) can lead to pneumonia.

Here’s how it works:

1.

MRSA as a cause of pneumonia

  • MRSA is a type of Staph aureus bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics.
  • It can infect the lungs and cause MRSA pneumonia, which tends to be more severe and harder to treat than pneumonia caused by typical bacteria.

2.

When does this happen?

  • Hospital-acquired (healthcare-associated) MRSA pneumonia:
Often occurs in people who are already hospitalized, especially those on ventilators (ventilator-associated pneumonia).
  • Community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) pneumonia:
Can occur in otherwise healthy people, sometimes after a viral infection (such as influenza), which weakens lung defenses and allows MRSA to invade.

3.

Symptoms of MRSA pneumonia

  • Fever
  • Cough (sometimes with bloody sputum)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Rapid worsening, particularly in vulnerable patients

4.

Risks and outcomes

  • MRSA pneumonia can progress rapidly.
  • It can cause complications like lung abscesses, sepsis, or respiratory failure.
  • Treatment requires targeted antibiotics, often intravenously.

So has it been confirmed if the staph infection is in any way correlated to the pneumonia definitively or did Mineo just report out of his ass about something that was at the time supposed to be kept pretty private and now everyone has jumped on it?

They briefly discussed Askren at the start of FRL today.  If the FRL staff have some inside details on Askren's condition they did not share it.  They simply reiterated what his wife said and asked for prayers. No mention of staph. Hope he pulls through.

On Basch and the Brain, Willie said that Ben punctured a rib a week or so which may have led to the infection, but the family wanted to keep it quiet.  I'm guessing he meant cracked a rib which punctured a lung.

This is sad and does bring up that we are all mortal and our time can come at anytime, no matter how fit, strong, or healthy we are.  Very sad news for Ben's family and Ben.   I hope he recovers.    I had pneumonia for 2 months last year and the medicines did not work until the third and most extreme type.   It just kept spreading.   A few days after I got a shot in the butt of the last medicine I felt well enough to go outside and walk, and I still remember being amazed how how it felt to get a full lung of air.   I didn't recognize I had much of a problem in that way, but it was incredible.   It was a long 2 months let me tell you.   I got the pneumonia shot a few  months after that.   I don't need that again.

Best wishes for Ben and his family.

My understanding that even a rib (or other injury) can give staph an environment to grow and propagate.  A guy I used to train with had a rib/lower back injury.  Staph made its way through a cut and found the injured site which gave it everything it needed to grow.

Why is Staph/MRSA more prevalent in what is supposed to be a sterile environment?

more prevalent than what....

Really unfortunate. I don't know him at all and only had a super brief exchange w him but he's definitely propelled WI forward in wrestling more than anybody in decades. Don't care if the top h.s. talent all leaves the state. It's great to see those local kids thriving like never before at the national level.

Hospitals are filthy. It's where sick people congregate. And lots of bodily secretions of various forms are shed there, and then make their way onto the floors and equipment, and eventually other people.

Also a lot of sanitization and antibiotics, which don't always get the worst stuff.  The stuff that survives the antibiotics/sterilization levels up. My understanding is that "hospital MRSA" is way worse than "wrestling MRSA" in general.

Contacted him just recently about training opportunities for someone at his recently announced RTC. He was reachable, immediately responsive, and helpful. Not the cocky guy from the podcasts that I expected.

..and he puts everything into coaching his AWA kids. If he goes to a youth tournament, he's constantly giving instructions from the corner. In his bare feet but that's beside the point.

I feel like if anyone had REAL inside info(not just...a vague details from someone who kinda knows him which is...more accurate and how I should have articulated what little information I had)...it'd probably be Flo.

Sure... never loved the Bare Feet, but I do love the way he brings kids along in the sport. He's not out there trying to get 2nd graders to win National Titles. That's why you have a lot of kids who aren't peaking until they are later in HS or College.

But that's all secondary to his wife and children.

I'm sure Ben will tell us all exactly what caused this in the future. Not to downplay how serious this is, but...this will not be the end of Ben Askren. ThatI'd bet money on.

Agreed scourge - he fights for a living. He’ll fight this too.

Any indication Covid is involved? Recently lost two friends to Covid that weakened them & Pneumonia took them out.

Hope he recovers & does well.
