On another recent thread that revolves around weigh-in timing, weight management, and cutting I got to wondering if anyone knows of GLP-1s being used for weight management? I thought it better to put on its own thread rather than muddy the other discussion with talk of drugs.

It seems like turning appetite down a few notches would make losing weight easier (duh!). But maybe there are side-effects to those drugs that make them undesirable as adjuncts to weight loss when physical performance is the higher level goal (as opposed to fat loss for weight/health reasons being the driving factor).

My big picture take is that the fewer pharmacological agents in all sports, not just wrestling, the better. I don't love the idea of ozempic being used to drop pounds for sport, but I have less of a charge around that than I do, say, PEDs.

Would these peptides not show up on a drug test?

they do but way easier to cover up. I can almost guarantee theres a reasons nolf didn't say "no one in college wrestling is on peptides"

Its pretty easy to get an amphetamine (adderall, vyvanse, dexedrine)  or amphetamine-adjacent (ritalin, modafinil, concerta) rd for ADHD.

What is NCAA policy on these? I'm sure there must be dr notes, forms to fill out, and other bureaucratic hoops. But if it's doable, how common is it? Is there any stigma?

Seems to me that Ozempic would make the actual fueling of intense and prolonged training nearly impossible.

as opposed to weight cutting?

I would not be surprised at all if some athletes are utilizing compounds like retatrutide or cagrilintide for fat loss. Ozempic in wrestling would likely just result in an overall loss in mass, not just fat.

If we're going to be using compounds, let's not forget about Tide Pods and shots of White Vinegar.

Wonders for weight loss.

my good friend is competitive on the high level BJJ circuit and has good success. He "cycles" on and off Ozempic when getting close to a competition - typically 3 weeks on and 1-2 weeks off. He has never complained of performance issues while on it. I wouldn't put it past him to try some other sauce though...

doesn't it eat muscle tissue?

i've never heard that, its definitely catabolic in the sense that it suppresses appetite.

A pharmacologist and a wrestling coach here. The muscle loss (sarcopenia) associated with this drug would likely negate any advantage for an athlete competing at a high level. One of the unanswered questions is what happens once you come off these drugs? Some of the companies that make them are trying to get a “childhood obesity” or similar label in the thoughts of people needing to be on them for life.

As an aside. Has anyone seen anyone use these drugs and lose weight and look healthy afterwards? The folks I’ve seen on them all have an unhealthy “sucked down” appearance.

There are a lot of other more performance-focused drugs that athletes have been using for a long time, mainly stimulants and certain other gear that dries you out rather than bloats you.

Wrestlers are good enough at understanding water and macros that something which across the board kills caloric uptake probably doesn’t get much traction.  I’m sure some guys have tried it, but there are a lot of other exogenous additives that are much sharper tools.

I posted about this topic about 6 months ago. Since then I started taking one and it's a cheat code for sure. A lot of bodybuilders are using it for cutting. Look up Hunter Williams, Jay Campbell. Plenty of dudes who will tell you about them. Drugs like retatrutide and cagri (like mentioned above) don't eat muscle like the previous GLP-1s do. And you can play with doses to where they're a literal cheat code.

For the ones that said it's cost prohibitive at $1k/month, peptides aren't actually regulated. Meaning you can get great quality peps for dirt cheap on the gray market. Same way dudes get their PEDs. I'd be very surprised if wrestlers and anyone cutting weight doesn't start to use these. I hate that I sound like an advertisement for it, but it's ridiculous how well they work and there's about 5 newer and better version in the works.

Im beginning to be more fascinated by people only keeping the discussions about old school anabolics and ozempic even though multiple people have pointed out that there's way more drugs available and being used

Humans have been cheating since the dawn of time.  Humans will continue to do so.   Even in our great sport.  In all walks of life there are cheats.   I would think there are almost no arguments to sway me of this idea.
