Kennedy wrestled 141. I expect he could work with lightweights, up to middleweights. Not as much flexibility with Gilman. Do they have an upper weight guy though? I'd think you want a young assistant at each end of the weight spectrum.

Wrestled 141 but what do you think he walks around at these days?  Sure he can coach the 125/133 fine but you really need a 125 type guy to work out with.  Just watch those 125b guys, they get into a lot different positions than the 141/149s.

I suspect his walking around weight is the same as the Ok. St. 141 lbers walking around weight.

I also disagree that 125 scrambles are different from 141-165 scrambles, but I acknowledge reasonable minds can differ.

I'm happy to have a "reasonable mind."  🙂

He was indeed, towards the end of his career he was up at 70 and maybe even 74kg.  I remember him beating Nolf up there...

Nolf won that match 4-1.

Some reason, when I read 74 my mind switched to JO.

My apologies.

SoFans need to get over the idea of alumni coming there to coach with DT. Although I've heard JO is a great partner/coach

I have heard he is literally one of the best.

John Smith used to let JO teach a lot of the technique to the team!

Sounded like DT wrestled with Hendrickson a lot.

As a friend and a fan of Wisconsin wrestling I would absolutely support this. I don't see it happening, but wouldn't mind being wrong on this.

Hopefully somebody who is not an emotional rollercoaster drama queen like Gilman. They need some maturity in that room and Gilman clearly couldn't bring it. Apparently getting in arguments with donors thinking they're hitting on his wife, fights with other coaches, etc. Thomas "Drama Queen" Gilman.

I think they weight classes that guys graduated wrestling is very different than where they can be effective coaches. Likely, most guys who graduate as 141 pounders spent almost their entire life as very lightweight guys until their bodies fully developed and filled out. Someone of Kennedy's caliber undoubtedly was a very successful wrestler when he weighed less than 130 pounds. You don't have to be a lifer 57kg guy to coach guys wrestling that weight.

yes but coaches are recruited as practice partners to a large extent. They can wrestle smaller guys for sure, but something will always be missing....if your point negated mine the size of the coaches wouldn't matter nearly as much as it seems to.

Gilman mentioned he was around 150 this year before his match during the Iowa State dual

the 125s he was coach probably hit 140 at times.

I didn't know 25s got up that high during the season, that's wild.

The week of a match?  If Gilman weighed 150 what do we think Kennedy weighs?

Not much talk about Lee Roper coming to OSU. I think this is good hire for them. He’s not really a big name, but they have the “star power” covered, so a coach with more experience and reputation as a good coach is just what they need.

With this hire, what makes everyone so sure they are also replacing Gilman’s spot with someone else? Who is Roper replacing and where are they going?
