Continue to hear rumors that John Smith is done at the end of this season.  Assuming it is true, who are the likely candidates and what happens if they take the job?

- Pat Pop - if he goes, who takes over at NC State, will assistants follow?

- Coleman Scott - heard OSU is the dream job and would leave beautiful UNC if offered the job.  Does Ramos take over?

- Cormier - don't think he jumps to college head coach from high school - totally could, but unlikely.  I think Pat Pop runs the tight ship OSU would be looking for.  But just curious the thoughts on new head coaches at the schools that would likely lose their head coach to OSU.

I’m not sure if Pat leaves NCST anymore. He’s got a ridiculous amount of admin support.

Coleman Scott, maybe. I think Ramos would do a good job if he took over. I like Poeta but I still wonder if they should have hired Ramos at Illinois.

I highly doubt they’ll hire Cormier. I think Branch would be a good candidate

Thread #234 on John Smith leaving.

The only thing that matters, is that it won't be Chris Pendleton.

GO BEAVS!

I’m a diehard VT fan but if smith retires, coach Pop is a no brainer. He’s an OK State alum (not critical but worth noting) and a proven program builder. He rebuilt binginton and turnt the pack into a perennial top 10 team in a short amount of time. He’s pulling Midwest guys to Raleigh now and his recruiting classes have been highly ranked. He is also known to be great at developing kids not ranked very high into AA guys like Jack.

Honestly, he’s great for the ACC and I’d hate to see him go but he’d be a fool to turn the offer if he gets one.

Seems like "there is a rumor that John is done at the end of this season" is brought up every season. It is getting old.

It is odd how we don't hear about every other OSU alumni as a candidate. We hear about the same 2 or 3 names. What about Nick & Tony Purler?  Both went to Okie State and Tony was on staff for a few years too. I am not saying that Nick or Tony would even want the job. I am saying that it would be really hard to take over after John Smith. The fans have become accustomed to winning and bringing in some tough kids from all over. I am not sure that Pat Popolizio leaves what he has to go work under the microscope of Okie State. I am not sure if a lot of people would be willing to take the job right after John.

We know that Pat Smith is not going to be considered. They already ran him out of Stillwater once, they aren't going down that path again. Same goes for Eric Guerrero.

So yeah I would say Esp probably has the inside lane on it, if he wants it.

If they'd be willing to have a non-OSU person come in, could they ever persuade Casey Cunningham to take the job?

He's a huge part of Penn State's dynasty, would be able to bring a strong international program, and in the past, OSU has not had problems offering top dollar to try to get good coaches (back in the 1980s, they offered Dan Gable $3 million to leave Iowa).

Without a doubt.

I think you guys are right but think Esposito would be a great choice as head coach for some program.  As a Blair guy, it could make sense for him leading an Ivy or the type of school Blair kids typically gravitate towards

Pat Pop or Casey Cunningham would be excellent candidates IF they are interested. Another big if would be if JS could keep going until after 2024 and they could potentially bring in one of our big name guys like Burroughs, Dake, or Taylor.

I think there is more merit to this rumor than in the past, chiefly because of NIL, RTC’s, and the changing nature of D1 wrestling. I’ve had conversations with certain people who have more insight into the nuts and bolts of DI head wrestling coaches’ lives, specifically John Smith among them. The future is not bright and he’s not the only one who feels that way. Retirement is a realistic option now that some would have never even considered 5 years ago.

You're right....NIL, RTC, and Transfer portal....need to raise funds......lot's on the plate.

Nil is going to change college sports.   That burwikk thread is just the start.  “Big” programs will be poaching small holes in their lineup annually.  It’s the new new.   People think recruiting over is bad now … wait till that magic portal can plug holes in an instant.

Fixed.

Fair.  I just think as head coaches adapt… which has already started.    It’s gonna get much crazier than it is now.   Tbh football and bball will learn first and the other smaller sports will steal the tricks from them.

I get it. I wasn't trying be argumentative. Football is already a free for all. Look at the commits and then the de-commits.

What does Burwikk have to do with NIL?

I didn’t wanna go into it on this thread.  Don’t know why I didn’t want to comment……

but head coaches are going to have to try to protect their turf more.  If I could prevent someone competing for a competitor especially if I’ve been losing players.  I just think either new rules will occur or head coach (if possible) will veto.

I’m aware his situation isn’t nil literally.  But we have like what 16 pages of complaining on that thread.  Wait till the Wild West of transfers start.
