  1. MM has teched better wrestlers than Shapiro who were full sized 74kg/165lb guys. Free or folk, doesn’t matter. Shapiro gets smashed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. As a fan, does anybody else prepare for this tournament by convincing themselves that their team will flop? Probably pretty common, but it makes these three days a brutal sort of anticipation.

  8. I don't see how this is close today. Could change in the future, but MM is quite a bit further in his career right now. Also, I believe MS mentioned he is not a big 157 and I feel that MM is a full size 165 so I think there might be a straight up horsepower advantage for MM.

  10. Mesenbrink gets Rohn'd first round. On his way to a tech, donkey punching his way to the hodge and a 1 loss/4x finalist/3x champ career when he gets stuck out of nowhere. The arena would erupt. Penn State bandwagoners that didn't know wrestling was invented before 2011 would go silent. Mother nature would restore harmonious balance.

  13. Well, these odds, whatever they are, put no dent in the evolution theory whatsoever. I agree that the establishment of the initial life is a big mystery still and seems very tough to occur by chance.

  15. I watch ESPN+ on my iPad and have ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU up on the big screen (I use Fubo). My iPad/Apple makes it super easy. I have ESPN+ listed in my subscriptions (likely from doing this every year). I literally click one button to subscribe and one button to cancel. I’ll probably subscribe today or tomorrow and cancel Sat night/Sun - my month will play out and it’ll be done until next year. $12.99/mo, it’s super easy. I’m not tech savvy either and would live in a shack in Montana or another boxy state out West with no contact with the modern world if life would allow it. If I can do it, you can too!! Come on!! It’s NCAA week!! Let’s F@#$ing Go!!!

  18. If you could waive a magic wand and guarantee one singular match result, what would it be? Preferably throwing your fanhood biases out the window I think mine is Conway over Welsh in the semis

  19. I think this is well done. Though I'm not a ref so my ability to comment on the details only goes so far. I'm still skeptical that this can be done in a manner that inspires confidence so I would vote for no reaction time, automatic touch takedowns as the rule. But I'd settle for a pushout rule combined with your proposal. I think that the stalling problems are unaddressable without the pushout rule, whereas I think your proposal could possibly work.

  20. Ok. This is helpful. Removing the word control to avoid that rabbit hole. New wording: When the offensive wrestler establishes takedown criteria and the defensive wrestler has three points of contact with the mat, the defensive wrestler is allowed one identifiable wrestling action to break takedown criteria. If that action is unsuccessful, reaction time is satisfied and the takedown is awarded. If successful, the offensive wrestler must re-establish takedown criteria and reaction time restarts.

  21. They have an error at 285. They have Nathan Taylor listed at +50000...wrestling for Penn. The Lehigh Nathan Taylor is seeded #6. Nathan Taylor is also a Penn 141 wrestler. Grab it while it is hot!

  22. I think if you asked the ref in that match he would still say McEneley didn't "retain control" because he never had control. Not trying to be difficult, I admire what you're trying to do. I just think that where you're going is going to have substantial subjectivity and I have zero confidence that can be applied by human refs in a satisfying way. That's why I prefer as much objectivity as possible. Push out rules to address the inconsistency (diplomatic way to put the current disaster) in stalling calls, and automatic touch/no reaction takedowns (because I think this is just too hard for even most good refs).

  24. Good point. Do you think this works better? “Reaction time is satisfied when the defensive wrestler has three points of contact with the mat and the offensive wrestler retains control following one identifiable wrestling action.” There is still some subjectivity on retains control but at least it defines the reaction to being one identifiable wrestling action. For example, if you take the Welsh/McEnelly controversy, it would become moot that Welsh took his hand off the mat because that was not his first identifiable wrestling action. The first was his attempt to reach back for the whizzer which he failed.

  25. Having those things available also plays into the probability issue. It's not a pro, it's a con. Every single variable being precisely as it needs to be, at exactly the right time, still only starts the ball rolling. Every single advancement requires perfect conditions. Then combine that with what we now know about DNA and we learn that all possible genetic features need to be available in the DNA. You can only lose information from DNA, you can never gain it.

  26. Taking fanhood out of it I will say Caliendo over Mesenbrink because of how crazy it would be for him to finally win it in the finals his senior year. Fanhood in it I will say Cardenas over Duke.

  33. I have a confession to make: i am a colorist. I have a prejudice and bias toward colors I can read and that are a nice contrast with a background. I prefer black over all others against a white background. And I prejudge reds , pinks, and other highlight colors as being unserious before I even read the content. I think the UN will probably come out with a proclamation against me even though the science of color and contrast proves what I say to be right. But we all know at science is colorist also.

  39. I just looked up Betancourt on Riders website. It looks like he was a pretty sought after recruit coming out of HS. Wrestling at both Ohio State and PSU. Going 15-6 at OSU as a true Freshman. Then a year at PSU before ending up at Rider in 2023 wrestled up a weight at 141 in 2024-25 season going 8–10. He was also a Silver Medalist at the Pan American Championships held in Oaxtepec,Mexico. This could be considered an upset for Baker is you just compare Bios and not the seeding numbers.

  43. My upsets that feel worth noting (championship-side only) 125: Robinson in the semis (if you want to call this an upset) 133: Ayala over Blaze in the quarters 141: Nothing excting 149: Swiderski over Van Ness (Van Ness starts slow and I don't think Swiderski is a dog. I don't think Swiderski gets bullied in the second half of the match) I also have McNeil making the semis on the bottom. 157: I have Robideau taking out Larkin and Duke to make the finals (haven't picked a winner between Robideau and Shapiro yet). 165: Nothing exciting 174: Nothing exciting 184: BrockMan makes the semis 197: Merrill makes the finals 285: AJ over Yonger in the semis.

  45. I understand that. He catches the eyes of recruits. But you know what’s really cool? Winning. People ride the line at PSU to get their shot at winning. If JB doesn’t make a wrestler consistently go from good to great, what’s he getting paid for? I just think he’s more of a band-aid on a bullet wound guy. A temporary fix.
