In an attempt to keep my self sane and use some of the things I have to at work for a good cause I've set out to do some research on wrestling. I've been working with @Wrestleknownothing and @cowcards on some NCAA results, more on that later. But...the world championship previews and in particular the discussions of athletes that have moved across weight classes had me wondering how common that is? And who does it the most? And is there anything we can learn from it? I haven't yet answered those questions, but I manged to mangle together some results from UWW results ( ~8,000). I put them in a network connecting wrestlers by bouts and then ran some algorithms to group them. No surprise the clusters mostly aligned to weight classes. I need to dig a little deeper, but, I find the non olympic weights interesting to look at and see how those wrestlers have moved around over the years. https://medium.com/@mattgrogan/the-united-world-wrestling-graph-2018-2025-4f9e1f9119fe2 points

Ha but let me say it this way - SIU Carbondale actually had zero D1 champs that year2 points

I never even heard of Hiram and I have no idea where "Western State" is - sounds like a made up college for a National Lampoons flick. And being an IL native, the fact that SIU Carbondale had 3 D1 national champs is pretty damn mind blowing. Times have certainly changed in the college wrestling world.2 points

Will all due respect AnklePicker, I think Mphillips is right, and you'd have a hard time convincing the rest of the world that Seniors isn't the litmus test. A couple of things . . . Hard to consider us the best wrestling country right now given our poor showing at 2024 Olympics...three total medals and no gold- the first time in 56 years. We finished 3rd (4th if you count Russia), so that doesn't equal best. And no golds in non-Olympic weights either. As OP suggested, I believe Jordan Burroughs was a catalyst for this recent "Golden Age." I was at Worlds in Budapest in 2013 for the dark days- when we only had one total world medal, a gold by Burroughs on a bum leg. At that point, he was USA Wrestling, and these kids now at U17/U20/U23 were grade schoolers who idolized him. I'm just as excited about this young crop as you (and everyone) are- I'm very hopeful that they can have the same impact in college and at the Senior level...time will tell, but we've never assembled this much talent at one time. It's exciting!2 points

Those aren't facts - both Obama and Biden deported quite a lot of people - more than what Trump did in his 1st term. And Biden raised the budget for border protection significantly. It was anything but "wide open"... that was just a talking point the Trump presidential campaign liked to use. Late in his term, Biden put together a comprehensive border protection plan that was supported by both R's and D's. But just before it came time to vote, Trump's presidential campaign encourage the R's to vote against it because they intended to use the border as a campaign topic -- and they didn't want Biden's administration to fix it. True story. Politics at its very worst.1 point

Deportation is currently triggered by ICE agents needing to make the quotas that are set by the Trump administration. Doesn't matter if they zero civil or criminal offenses (which is the case for many.) Quotas demand deportations. Has little to nothing to do with law enforcement. Just meeting mush brain's targets.1 point

Something like 70% of the illegals Obama deported didn’t commit any additional crimes on top of being here illegally. The outrage on the left is nothing more than I don’t like the giant orange man.1 point

Yeah 65 is an actual mess in terms of predicting who is going to win it every year. I think it also has do to with the fact that the vast majority of countries can field top level guys at that weight class. Compare that to 57 or 125 where the number of elite guys is far less purely due to genetics. It is very unlikely you will find an elite 125 from Japan or an elite 57 from Iran because of that. I also think there is a lot of parity because its pretty much impossible to prep for 8-10 high level guys for a worlds/olympics. Olympics last year had Muszukaev, Dudaev, Amouzad, Retherford, Kiyooka, Rivera, Aliyev, Ochir, Akmataliev and Tevanyan. More than half of the guys in the bracket were world/olympic medalists. That's just stupid depth. So a little under performance in one match can cost you a medal. I think this is where the Russian guys benefit the most because of how nuts their brackets are domestically they are used to it so they better navigate through. Whereas in Iran and US there isn't as much depth domestically so our guys aren't as used to these sort of brackets.1 point

Did he get kicked off? And is now back with a new name and pretending he's someone else? Weird.1 point

Definitely Fadzaev. Dude dominated 65kg for a decade straight, winning World/Olympic gold from '83 to '92. The only year in there he missed was '84 due to boycott. No one since has come close to that. The most recent streak is likely Gevorgyan from Armenia who won world gold consecutively in '95, '97 and '98, but placed 5th in 1996 Olympics, losing to our very own Townsend Saunders in the semis, effectively breaking his streak. Crazy to think that's been almost 30 years ago...Yikes!1 point

I'm not sure how much you have watched Zepeda wrestle. . .when Zepeda is in shape and motivated, he is capable of beating anyone in this age group. I look at this as a quality win for Stanich, regardless of the score.1 point

We’re less than 48 hours away from the debut of Real American Wrestling and the RAF 01 card. The ten-match event has to be one of the most star-studded standalone cards our sport has ever seen. Don’t agree? Below, we have some impressive numbers to help demonstrate that assertion. Remember, RAF 01 takes place Saturday at 7pm (eastern) on the Fox Nation app. 2 = # of four-time NCAA champions on this card: Dake and Diakomihalis 3 = # of Dan Hodge Trophy winners competing on Saturday: Dake, Nickal, Hendrickson 3 = # of RAF 01 competitors who made the 2025 US Senior World Team: Blades, Hendrickson, Woods 5 = # of Senior World/Olympic medalists in action: Blades, Dake, Diakomihalis, Hildebrandt, Punia 6 = # of Olympians on the mat in Cleveland: Blades, Dake, Elders, Gomez, Hildebrandt, Punia 6 = # of RAF 01 participants who qualified for Final X 2025: Blades, Dake, Diakomihalis, Hendrickson Wick, Woods 18 = # of NCAA Championships won by wrestlers on this card: Dake (4), Diakomihalis (4), Nickal (3), Nolf (3), Caldwell (1), Hamiti (1), Hendrickson (1), Tomasello (1)* 24 = # of NCAA finals appearances combined from this card: Dake (4), Diakomihalis (4), Nickal (4), Nolf (4), Caldwell (1), Gomez (1), Hamiti (1), Hendrickson (1), Palmer (1), Ramos (1), Tomasello (1), Woods (1)* 45 = # of NCAA All-American honors for wrestlers on this card: Dake (4), Diakomihalis (4), Nickal (4), Nolf (4), Palmer (4), Tomasello (4), Cardenas (3), Hamiti (3), Hendrickson (3), Wick (3), Woods (3),Caldwell (2), Gomez (2), Ramos (2)* *Blades won NCWWC national titles at Iowa in each of the last two years. Ryan Sullivan who started his career in 2020 at Pittsburgh as a redshirt then transferred to West Virginia for his first year of eligibility where he was a NQ at 133. He didn't wrestle during the 2022 or 2023 seasons. He wrestled for Clarion in 2024 at 141 as a starter with a solid record but did not qualify. He did not wrestle in 2025, and now he joins George Mason as the projected starter at 141.1 point
