Not a good loo for Bo or Iowa. Curious what drove this. Experience with Iowa or seeing what the experience of non-Iowa recruits is. I’m not 13 years old … but that said, I don’t expect to root much for this guy. Jax, Blaze, and other guys seem a lot less narcissistic.4 points

Not gonna lie it does bother me a little bit that he made such a big deal about his “commitment”, but then changed it anyway.4 points

"Look, they're not good for me as a wrestler, a person or a Christian. But I will never say anything bad about them" is legit hilarious.4 points

It's certainly not a fun topic to discuss, but a necessary one. Part of the problem in the first place is the reluctance/refusal to talk about these kinds of things4 points

I was actually excited about him going to Iowa. I thought Blaze, Bo and Jax going to different schools was interesting and I thought it would make the PSU/Iowa rivalry better too.3 points

I'm surprised by them asking for donations. The Askrens are a wealthy family. Ben has been involved with bitcoin, he's the partial owner AWA and I believe has 3 gyms that he directly owns, plus all the money he has made in the entertainment industry (mma, boxing).3 points

“Islamic Republic media outlets have officially acknowledged the Israeli-American strike on the Fordow nuclear facility. In a rare moment of public reckoning, one outlet stated: “For 47 years they wasted the nation’s wealth on Fordow — and it turned to dust overnight.” The confirmation marks a stunning admission of the scale of destruction inflicted on one of Iran’s most fortified nuclear sites.” https://www.jfeed.com/latest-news2 points

The only other countries that are sufficiently strong and complex enough to make a foreigners time worthwhile would be Iran, Russia, and Japan. I don't think any of these countries have an end all be all team trial. Russia has the most straight forward process. They have a tournament called the Russian Nationals (it's a direct descendant of the Soviet National Championships) where citizens from the country compete under the flag of their province (multiple entrants per province are aloud). If you win that tournament you are either the world/olympic rep or if there is a highly decorated athlete in that weight class who did not win/participate, they'll have them wrestle off with the winner of the Russian Nationals. It's important to note that Russian wrestling is dominated by two ethnic minorities, an Iranic speaking people called Ossetians and the muslim ethnic groups that live around Dagestan (Dagestani is not an ethnicity). Flo would invite a Slavic Russian wrestler from St Petersburg to try to get inside scoops on the Russian scene and it ended up not working at all because he was as much of a stranger to these two communities as Christian Pyles was. He wasn't imbedded in either the Ossetian or Dagestan scenes, so he had no interesting information to give. Iran does not have a formal process. Whoever is in charge of the national team picks the team, and whatever process he does or does not want comes up on the fly. It will be something like they'll send 3 tough guys from 125 kg to this ranking series and its understood that if someone from Iran wins it they get the spot. They do have a domestic wrestling wrestling scene. From what I've seen it's like European in soccer in that there are clubs and they can buy and sell wrestlers for their club team. So Zara and Yazdanis have clubs that they represent. I don't know how often the top world teamer Iranians actually wrestle in this club system and it features a lot of lower level competitors. The club season exists independently from what happens in international wrestling. Oh and most of their wrestlers come from a province called Mazandaran. Japan's I know the least about. I think their wrestling is based around Universities (not that it's like American College wrestling, just that Unis are the entity which provides them the framework for training and being a team). They have a tournament called the Emperor's Cup which is involved with how they pick their team. I don't remember what their other tournaments are called but I think they have one or two other big ones. I also am not exactly sure how they chose the team. I remember reading something like if you win X and the Emperors cup you're guaranteed the spot. So for watching, the easiest place to start with is youtube. Typing in Russian Nationals in Cyrillic or trying to find the federations channels. If you can't find the whole, you might find clips. Twitter might be good to check out, both English speaking and local language. Wrestling is still very much niche in Russian and Japan, so even for native speakers it's not the easiest thing to get into.2 points

This is not even dog whistle antisemitism. People were saying the same nonsense when Biden was funding Israel. Please stop identifying everything as "oppressed and oppressor." Israel isn't TRYING to oppress Palestine (well, they weren't, now they're just kicking ass in Gaza because they just never stop). The Palestinians have been given AMPLE opportunity for peace. They've not once negotiated in good faith. Israel pulled out of in 2005 and their GDP was growing at 4-5% per year(so good economic growth). They got more aid per capita than anywhere in the world. I wonder what Palestine would look like if... they just put that money toward the people rather than building on the underground tunnel system and building military bases in schools and hospitals? But they didn't. And sadly, as Oct7th approached, more and more Palestinians were in favor of peace. Israel was building hospitals, but you're goddamn right they still had strong borders and blockades. But if you're going to ask why Israel, the Country that's been attacked since the ENGLISH Mandate, had strict check points and borders, lets ask why Egypt did as well? But in the end, aside from aside from "Nettanyahoos," being a childish retort and similar to Scout/Jimmy's "libtardods" line...what you're really saying is, "The Jews are controlling us." You really think the US is doing something that's NOT in it's own best interest? And they've been doing this since Carter? C'mon...1 point

All this does is prove to Iran that they need a nuke. It’s the only reliable deterrent of US attack. If they weren’t working towards one already (and our own intelligence has confirmed that they have no evidence they were), they certainly will be now. They would be insane not to. Today, Trump has all but guaranteed a nuclear Iran.1 point
-
Wrong. They were no longer beholden to those numbers if the Us withdrew from the deal, which they did. Iran is actually still compliant with the nuclear deal to this day. If Trump wanted them to stay at the lower number, he shouldn’t have withdrawn.1 point

I'm not. It's the for-profit healthcare system. Ben is doing well for himself, but he's not Jeff Bezos. You need to be a higher class of wealthy to absorb something like this.1 point

Japan's team will be set tomorrow. Here is what they have so far 57: Sakamoto (CWC) or Yumiya 61: Suda 65: Kiyooka or Tanabe 70: Aoyagi 74: Takahashi or Sato 79:Kamiya 86: H. Ishiguro 92: T. Ishiguro 97: Yoshida 125: Yamamoto It will be far from Japan's best possible team, but it will still be very good with multiple threats for medals.1 point

In response to my returning points thread, someone on 34andcounting asked what kind of points could a freshman be expected to score at the NCAA Tournament. Using Willie's Big Board data I decided to take a look. One huge caveat is that the numbers below are fitted lines through some VERY noisy data. The first thing I looked at was the odds of qualifying for the tournament based on BB rank. There are 12 years worth of graduating classes in the data (2013 - 2023) that have completed true freshman and redshirt freshman years. For these calcs I am including true freshmen and redshirt freshmen for each high school graduating year. For example, for 2022 grads I include 2023 true freshmen plus 2024 redshirt freshmen. 80% of Success is Showing Up 100% of #1 Big Boarders qualified for the tournament as either a true freshman or a redshirt freshman. These are your only sure things. By the time you get to the #10 BB it is a 50/50 proposition whether they even qualify for the tournament, never mind score once they get there. No Participation Points But you can't just show up. Once a freshman makes the tournament they still need to score. Combining scoring with probability of making the tournament steepens the curve somewhat. At almost 18 points per, #1 BB can be expected to score in the high teens in their freshmen year (true or redshirt). But that is it. No other rank cracks double digits. And by the time you get to the #10 ranked freshman recruit you are looking at about 4 points. Bring in da' Noise, Bring in da' Funk That really should be Mitchell Mesenbrink's walk out music. Remember what I said about the noise in the data? Mesenbrink is the physical embodiment of that noise (and he was trained by the Master of Funk). As the #59 ranked wrestler in his class, the line above suggests he is good for about a half a point in his freshman year. Well, at 19.5 points he is what we would call an outlier. And the reason you should take this with a grain of salt.1 point

Just watched it and oof that was a tough one, especially being a buckeye myself. After making this post, I ended up reading into the allegations and noticed Strauss had a lot of publications on steroids and PEDs. I wondered if that played a role, and it seems it did. I bet every university had a similar roid guy back then cuz dudes were freaking jacked. Look at Coleman and Kevin Randleman, for one. It was particularly sad watching how Russ Hellickson and Jim Jordan went from family to these guys and role models to straight up turning their backs on them. That was pretty heartbreaking. I'm impressed with the whistleblower in 95. I can't believe their response to somebody being sexually assaulted is "hey how about you come in tomorrow, and you, the doctor who assaulted you, and I can talk it over". That's a no from me dog. He handled it like a champ and, had the doctor's boss not straight up lied to him about complaints, would've sued em.1 point

Short matches and lots of scrambles. Pre-determined scenarios to demonstrate the huge range of attacks and pinning combinations in the sport. Instead of stall calls, put a guy in on another guy's leg. Get rid of any rule that's mildly subtle or confusing. Have some way to rack up advantage points that the wrestler can make a choice with during the match and during the season. Let viewers have input on matchups. Lastly for the love of god have some stats besides height and weight! Shots per match, go-to moves, anything to help viewers get an idea of wrestlers styles and brainstorm matchups.1 point
