In spite of the fact that it ended with the biggest upset of the tournament, 285 was the most chalk weight. The sum of absolute deviations from seed was 77, just ahead of 125 at 81.5. This also made the heavies the second most chalk weight since the 33 seed era began. Only 165 in 2019 was more chalk. At the other end of the spectrum 141 was the most busted bracket this year (but only sixth most in the 33 seed era). A lot of the "bust" came from five of nine guys seeded to go 0-2 finishing with win(s), and three higher seeded wrestlers doing the opposite.5 points

My understanding is they pushed him out because they wanted to give Keegan O'Toole a full-time coaching job and I'm assuming to make sure he stays after graduation. With Tyrel, they used the rational that as the top assistant it was time for him to find a head coaching position... and they helped out by taking his current job. Tyrel is the salt of the earth and an outstanding coach; anyone suggesting that he did anything to deserve this is just trying to make excuses for a pretty lousy way to treat someone.4 points

IMO He’s a d1 Capable wrestler but I’m not sure he’s convinced himself of that. I watched him over the last few years go from a kid who could handle a Gavin Sax (and knew it), to the gap closing, to losing to him (seemingly confused as to how) to having to switch weights when Sax transferred to Oklahoma. Sax get better? Yep. Coaching? Maybe, but they’ve both had Kish and another coach. Mindset? Probably IMO. With what time he has left find a place that makes it fun and then let it fly.3 points

Every program misses on some recruits. Some just don't pan out like everyone thought they would. It is the coach's job to put the best team on the mat that they possibly can. If that means dipping into portal to fill holes in the roster then they absolutely should. I don't care if it is Iowa, PSU or Ok St. These programs are not doing anything wrong. This is the game now and if you don't take advantage of the portal then you are not improving your roster. At the end of the day, results are what matters and is the difference between keeping or losing your job. A coach would be a fool not to use the portal to their advantage.3 points

I don't doubt either on a technical level honestly. It just has to do with size currently. Can Gibson make the cut down? He swears he can via X, but how will he look once he gets there? Smith came into RU very small. He just needs some muscle packed on.2 points

RUTGERS - FINAL(???) UPDATE 125: Smith/Gibson (This will be the black hole weight this year) 133: Shawver 141: Olivieri 149: Clark 157: Harer 165: Barbosa 174: Pinto 184: SCW 197: Cotton 285: Catka Things look brighter than they were a month ago, but I will temper my expectations for now. Good dual team, but I have no clue who I see AAing in this crew come March. Shawver could have the fire to come back after a disappointing 2025. Catka and Pinto just need to put one good tournament together. SCW and Olivieri showed they have some fight in them. This is a team that has just as high of a chance at getting 0 AAs as they do at getting 4-5. We shall see...2 points

Rumor has it that Kish and staff have been pulling some BS with these guys. NIL deals not followed through on, scholly's not followed through on. Wiley and McDougal both bailing because of some slimy stuff on Kish's part. Tate should go to UCO and try to AA IMO, he has not panned out. Great kid, but just not a D1 guy IMO.2 points

We have already seen Plott move up to 92 it looks like, wonder who else follows. Is McFadden out? he would be the 2 seed at 79kg no?1 point

not knocking any of the other competitors ofc i'm going w/ hendrickson over zillmer cause he has momentum and has improved a ton this past year blaze's matches w/ fix & gross were both razor thin last time. 61kg's prolly the deepest weight 79kg and 92kg are both relatively weak compared w/ the other weights which is a bit concerning for usa's team title chances come worlds. i'm hoping whoever loses at 86 & 74 bumps up to challenge the gaps really hope we get to see carr vs mesenbrink at 74kg1 point

How do people NOT know this? It’s 2025, guys. It’s very likely that one or two of our 2024 Olympians had a USADA tester show up at their house at zero dark thirty this week to administer a wiz-quiz. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Whether it’s right or not, I personally would prefer it. I do think 12 weights is a bit of an overkill and it would probably be more likely to do 9 men’s and 9 women’s weights if we are stuck on 18. It would probably be more fair to do 10 men’s and 8 women’s but I’m guessing they would rather keep it equal. Honestly I’m surprised, Greco has made it this long without an equivalent women’s sport.1 point

Men have proven they are better women than women are. They get all the awards, they are better athletes. Yes, men are better at being weomen than women are. mspart1 point

It doesn't happen all that often. According to RV, we shouldn't worry about this. mspart1 point

would rather see jack at 133 and Redding at 141 - always felt he wrestled better with a little weight on him even when dresser threw him in at 1491 point

Even if it was the plan to replace Todd, doing after Big 12s but before NCAAs would indicate something else occurred. Maybe it didn't but it seems like a logical assumption.1 point

I think beach wrestling might be attractive to the Olympics because at appeals to younger audiences and has a format that the IOC prefers. Matches are pretty quick, which I guess works well with our modern attention spans, and the rules are easy to understand. Barriers to participation are very low for both genders, which is another plus. Don't get me wrong, I prefer freestyle any day, but it wouldn't be shocking to see beach succeed FS/Greco, or for us to get something like MFS, WFS, GR, and Women's Beach (probably less likely). I'd also like to see beach encourage more technique so it isn't just Sumo At the Shore. They also have their own weird version of criteria that's kind of weird, IIRC, and when there's a tie score at the end of the match the winner can be determined by last score, judge's decision, or whichever wrestler weighed-in the lightest(? maybe because there are only 4 weight classes?). I'm not sure what the official UWW rules are on tiebreakers or if the national federations have their own variants.1 point

I doubt it ever happens due to weight management/injury and retirements but I think that D2vD3 dual would be a great event a way to grow interest in those levels. Also a pipe dream is a 2A vs 3A PIAA state champ dual1 point

Thompson was a shell at 174lbs. He should have never gone that weight. He was the best of the bunch (Arnold, Barr, Welsh, Rogotzke, etc) and I think we're going to see him in the mix at 197lbs this year. I don't think Merrill as the starter is a given, at this point.1 point
