Remember when it was only Iowa fans that were insufferable.... I'm worried about some of you. Look what NIL and the portal has done to your lives. Come back to us.7 points

Can you guys please take your discussion on the perils of NIL to another thread? It would be super awesome if the thread on the transfer portal was focused on the athletes in the portal and where they are going. There are hundreds, probably thousands of people who come to these forums for updated information and informative discussion about the sport, but these super long irrelevant arguments really ruins the forum experience for those non-members who just come here for the must current info.7 points

No. You are choosing to interpret things in the way that most aligns with what you want to be true.5 points

The framing of virtuous Penn State. So fun. This is a dirty game now, fellas, and PSU is playing it as much as anybody else.5 points

Holy Strawman, Batman... Saying the word "fact" before making a statement doesn't actually make it true. What are you talking about?? Not one person has accused PSU of a rule violation or a massive conspiracy, including myself, who just challenged the ridiculous notion that Rocco is only getting some minimal NIL deal that all PSU athletes get. Just because you offer less than somone else doesn't meant PSU is offering nothing or the minimum deal everyone else gets. Cael recruiting over Ryder isn't a crime, rule violation or conspiracy, but it is a fact because it actually happened.3 points

I replied in another thread about how the heavyweight class seems to shedding quite a few pounds for next year - I think Cole Mirasola's future is at heavyweight wherever he goes. Next year at heavyweight most of the top contenders will be "undersized" heavyweights - this year graduated a lot of really good guys who were 250lbs and up and could really wrestle - Hendrickson, Gable, Kerk, Schulz, Trephan, Heindleman & Luffman - Next year most of the best guys seem to be in that 225 to 240 range. Trumble, Bastida, Ghiadelli, Kueter, Feldman, Pitzer are all lighter type heavyweights. Taylor of Lehigh will be a big exception which I hope can work to his favor. He should be up close to the weight limit. As far as new guys coming in I expect Mirasola, Hopke, and if he doesn't grey shirt Correa will all be light. Attao if he comes in might be a bit on the heavier side. It will be interesting to see who rises to the top. Anyway I thought it deserved it's own topic - it will be a bit different3 points

I haven’t seen this info posted yet, so I figured I would share. I realize this topic deviates a little from the usual banter; however, I thought it to be relevant. The ratings for the tournament are in- the finals drew 703,000 viewers on ESPN. The good news is that this is a solid number for college wrestling, it represents a huge increase over last year, and that it reverses an alarming trend of declining viewership over the last few tournaments. In addition, these finals had some great moments by any objective measurement, and while we only had a few matches that could qualify as barnburners, we also didn’t have any that lasted 20+ minutes. In other words, this large number of viewers was exposed to a quality product. The bad news, of course, is that wrestling is (and will probably always be) a niche sport, and the ~700K viewers seem to be fairly close to the ceiling for this event. For comparisons sake, the finals drew more viewers than: Banana Ball (?) (197K) College basketball slam dunk and 3-point championship (572K) College softball regionals (701K) Cornhole (188K) Crossfit Games (269K) F1 Practice (599K) Hot Dog Eating Contest (491K) The Boston Marathon (369K) MLB Draft (670K) NCAA Lacrosse Finals (437K) Boys Flag Football Championship (212K) NHL Draft (502K) Pickleball (596K) And the finals drew less viewers than: ACC Basketball Finals (3,066K) College Baseball Super Regionals (1,493K) College Softball World Series (2,036K) Heisman Trophy Presentation (2,521K) Little League World Series (1,228K) NBA Draft Lottery (3,240K) Wimbledon Finals (2,212K) WNBA Draft (2,446K) https://ustvdb.com/networks/espn/shows/ https://ustvdb.com/networks/espn/shows/college-wrestling/ https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/sports-ratings-tracker/2 points

My sense is that its a lot less calculated than we think from the outside. I think its more subject to spontaneity, chance, and happenstance than can be imagined. Relationships and human emotions are unpredictable by nature so I think it's hard to say that teams are making some sort of calculation. I think the primary calculation is to get directionally better which means always being open to wrestlers who might want to try out for the team2 points

Shouldn't Ryder have had the motivation to beat him out H2H in the room for the spot and win a title? Him leaving presumably shows he doesn't have the confidence that he can earn the spot. That or he and his family decided he can get a full ride and money elsewhere instead of a partial at PSU. Possibly a combination of both...2 points

Saint feels...not quite strong enough. Omniscient deity is more like it. That's the thing. You are calling things facts that are not facts. They are you interpreting circumstances in the way that is most favorable to your pre-decided position and then calling those interpretations facts. For example: Neither of these things are facts, they are opinions. After that, you're most relying on the statement of Welsh himself and insisting they are facts even though there's no evidence other than the word of Welsh, who is highly incentivized to make himself and his new institution look as good as possible, and dismissing disinterested parties, like Willie Saylor or Justin Basch (although you could argue Mr. Basch is a somewhat interested party) making the immediate reports. Everything after that just seems like window dressing to most of the rest of us, since he never actually met with anybody, but more ofa reaction of it looking bad that he had already committed to Penn State immediately after being in the portal. And I want to be clear, I'm not stating that what I am saying is fact. Clearly I'm stating my opinion based on what we're seeing; I would just posit that most of the non-Penn State fanbase would say my interpretation is the more likely and logical way it played out. Later you accuse me of being salty about previous accusations against Iowa, but no, I believe Iowa probably did a lot of the things we're talking about here, too. That's the game now, whether you like it or not, and Penn State is playing it, which you appear to be doing everything in your power to convince yourself they are not.2 points

One, the fact that PSU had Ryder, who most see as being on Welsh's level, making it illogical for PSU to affirmatively seek out Welsh as a replacement. Two, the fact that Welsh had a prior history of discontent at OSU that is unrelated to PSU, with a confirmed visit to OSU back in December and Ryan having to publicly quell the fire back. Three, Welsh's stated reason for preferring PSU -- that he wanted a stronger training room -- meshes well with his discontent at OSU, where he asked them to get better RTC guys but they weren't able to. Four, Welsh's own words, disclaiming that PSU was ever a foregone conclusion, but rather was one of a couple of frontrunners at the time. Fifth, the fact that the Mineo "done deal" tweets proved to be false (unless you call Welsh a liar), given his indication that he fielded numerous offers, and given the fact that he didn't commit right away. Sixth, the fact that PSU was offering less $ than other schools. Seventh, the fact that Welsh isn't exactly Cael's "type": all tatted up, a temper, apparently not recruited by PSU in high school. Eight, Starocci's pro-Ryder tweet, and Ryder's later departure, suggest that all of this happened very suddenly from PSU's perspective, as it wasn't pre-vetted with the team or Ryder. Ninth, the general absurdity of the notion that Cael, with a bunch of consecutive titled and strongly favored to win at least the next couple as well, would suddenly throw it all away by engaging in massive recruiting violations that could cost him his job and get him and his team suspended from competition. Tenth, the utter lack of any facts or evidence cutting the other way. Even Ryan, who's quick to whine about virtually everything, hasn't said a single sour word toward PSU about this. *** How about you. Do you have any facts that this was a massive conspiratorial rule-violating poaching of a competitor, planned and executed by those evil cackling PSU miscreant coaches? I'll wait.2 points

They won't, at least not as the PR stunts promise. The finances don't work for a variety of reasons. This is one of the ruses that politicians play. Hold a presser promising thousands of jobs, give away millions in tax dollars, if not billions...then, nothing. Recall the Foxconn fiasco. It's a story the continues to be repeated. Photo ops with shovels, 1/10th of the promises are delivered, if that. For instance, during the last Trump administration, he touted steel tariffs as a huge win because there was a slight uptick in US steel jobs, but that was outstripped by job losses in steel-related industries. It was a net loss - certainly nothing to celebrate. There certainly will be some industries that already have infrastructure in place may decide to ramp up production on a temporary basis, but that's window dressing. Car manufacturers, for instance, could increase production on a line or two for a short time, but it won't be a repatriation of production. I do understand the emotional element of this and I am not going to discount that factor in the decisions that are being made, because it appeals to a large portion of the voter pool. The US, historically, was a big producer of goods and entire regions were propped up by those industries and people long for the same environment.2 points

And why are you hypothesizing this, the best possible version of events for Penn State?2 points

There are four pages in this thread and I haven't seen anyone take issue with the OP's original premise that companies pay tariffs to sell their goods in other countries. That's not how it works. The importer pays the tariff. That cost is then passed on to the consumer in nearly every instance. So the tariffs make products/raw materials more expensive to import for US-based companies/consumers, decreasing demand, thereby reducing the promised (grossly overstated) revenue potential from tariffs and creating an inflationary environment. Also, these things aren't happening in a vacuum. The world is vast and resource-rich. The US isn't the only supply option for many things. Tariffs have their place, but what Trump is doing is nonsensical. It won't deliver anything he's say it will and, more likely than not, will have the opposite impact on our trade +/- and will slow our economy, or worse.2 points

It was enormously unfair that so many 5th year guys got to stay around and seems to have been most unfair at HWT. It was an insane idea from NCAA - I assume for other revenue sports but never looked at the details.2 points

It’s the very reason all the rumors of AJ Ferrari going up to HWY started and IMO make perfect sense now because of it. If Kerk, Schultz, Hendrickson and Gable type big heavies were coming back, Ferrari would have been a fool making that sort of move. Now it makes all the sense in the world.2 points

You are really reading a ton into the "we build, we don't buy" quote. Getting 1 or 2 guys to supplement holes doesn't mean you "bought" a trophy, especially when the other trophy teams have more transfers and are spending more on NIL. He never said they wouldn't go after a top transfer either. Manning acknowledged they use NIL, but they don't have the NIL money to spend as much as other programs so they have to build guys.2 points

No - most coaches wouldn't bring in a transfer that makes them 2% better at the weight (maybe not even that) but risks damaging the team chemistry and their reputation for future recruits.2 points

Unfortunately for Penn State, being in the BIG means they are forced to wrestle patsies like Iowa and Nebraska, teams that can only win a couple of matches at most.2 points

Tariffs won’t ruin the average person. Most adapt: buy used, fix what we have, seize opportunities. I’ve driven beaters, done repairs, overspent on credit, saved cash... not ‘out-of-touch.’ I don’t swap cars yearly; I just replaced my wife’s and got my kids their first ones. Rural life demands wheels. Success takes grit and bold choices; I respect leaders risking it for the big picture. There is empathy here, but I am too hard and positive to support those who wallow in it.2 points

So…..you don’t “start there” with the high paying jobs. The high paying jobs come AFTER the hard work and sacrifice, not where you start. Additionally there are a ton of high income resolutions that do not include being a CEO, engineer, etc. Have you seen some of the houses and cars owned by real estate agents, salesmen, etc? You know how they can afford those things without being CEO…grinding. Hard work. Smart work. And good decisions. There’s also tons of ways to make additional/supplemental money outside of your 9-5, without having to clock in going to work. They call it make your money work for you ..but it all comes down to decisions and actions. I look forward to your next speech about being so out of touch. Have a good day.2 points
