  4. I'll go with Lehigh's Colin Kilrain in 1981 and 1982. Kilrain was seeded 1st in the 1981 tournament, based on an undefeated season including a win over Ed Banach, the eventual champion. Colin lost 5-3 in the semis to Clarion's Charlie Heller and wrestled back for 3rd place. In 1982 Kilrain was again undefeated and seeded 1st, this time at 190; the other top seeds were Mike Mann, Bill Scherr, and Pete Bush. Colin had beaten Mann and Bush during the season. This was the tournament when Harold Nichols threw a fit over the 190-lb seeding and the seeding committee re-seeded the weight; Mann and Bush were originally seeded 2nd and 3rd and would have met in the semis. Instead Kilrain met Bush in the semis and walked into a 44-second fall. Bush beat Mann 3-3, 2-2, criteria for the title; Kilrain wrestled back and beat Scherr for 3rd. Bush said it was the only time he beat Mann in a lifetime of trying. Kilrain made a career of the Navy, became a Seal, recently retired as a Vice Admiral. His wife is a retired astronaut. One of their children, Sean, is on the Lehigh roster now.

  6. these and Dan Gable are good nominations. Maybe Jon Trenge the year he lost in the last few seconds to Damion Hahn in the NCAA finals? Was that the year before Trenge met Cael (bumping up a weight for his 4th NCAA title) in Albany?

TB: Define happy. Reporter 3: What were your takeaways from the match? TB: We like our guys. Reporter 4: Any upcoming news for the die-hard Iowa fans? TB: You've been around long enough to know not to ask that question.

  10. I have to admit that when I saw the title of the thread, I was a little scared. But @ionel and you had me laughing. Here's a JOMBO™ that I don't think has been posted on this board yet.

  11. I agree 100% with both of these, but these also occur because both wrestlers wind up in positions they aren’t willing to sacrifice because of the risk of doing so. I think it would be sick, because it just forces wrestling. I think 80% of stalemates are save time stalemates instead of real stalemates. What if, for example, they changed stalemates to a double stall call? Just spitballing =D

  14. https://thehill.com/business/4413609-dimon-democrats-should-grow-up-listen-to-trump-supporters/ Dimon: Democrats should ‘grow up,’ listen to Trump supporters JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon slammed Democratic messaging about MAGA, or “Make America Great Again,” Republicans on Wednesday, telling Democrats to “grow up” and “listen” to supporters of former President Trump. “When people say MAGA, they’re actually looking at people voting for Trump and … they’re basically scapegoating them,” Dimon told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “I don’t like how [Trump] said things about Mexico … but he wasn’t wrong about some of these critical issues, and that’s why they’re voting for him,” Dimon continued. “And I think people should be a little more respectful of our fellow citizens.” “I mean, really, can we just stop that stuff and actually grow up and treat other people with respect and listen to them a little bit,” he said, adding, “I think this negative talk about MAGA is going to hurt Biden’s election campaign.” Dimon has stayed out of politics but I think what he is saying here is true. People who support Trump are concerned about things. People who support Biden are concerned about things. Best to listen to all of them and deal with all the concerns. This is a nice fresh take and I hope the nation gets it. mspart

  15. Hunte drew Lehigh's Bob Sloand in the first round in '77. Sloand had talent but was unseeded due to a roller coaster year. He won 9-9, 3-2 against Hunte, won his second match, and then med forfeited the next day due to a knee injury. Defeated wrestlers only wrestled back if they lost to semi-finalists back then, so Hunte was out. Iowa finished 3rd, 11.5 points behind Iowa State; it probably cost Iowa the team title.

  16. A number of good answers here.....here's another one.....Steve Hunte Iowa 1976 and 1978 2 time Big Ten Champion 1977 and 1978. Ranked #1 both years. Seeded #1 in '77 and Seeded #2 in 1978. He went 0-1 in '77 and 3 and 2 in '78, not placing either year.

  25. I see high school refs call stalemate when the top guy has legs in for an extended period. Is that the right call? I think of it as a form of riding, like a spiral ride or controlling the wrist - which would never be called a stalemate.

  27. Yeah I see a lot of the stalemate positions being called as positions where one wrestler is in a clear advantage position and the other wrestler is just holding on to force a stalemate and get a fresh start. I think we could do away with 90% of stalemate calls in matches.

  32. I don't know much about the Iowa stuff. What I do know is she's an establishment shill who is beholden to her donors. She's a war hawk and her speeches come across super cringe and not well thought out. However I would begrudgingly vote for her over Biden or Newsom.

  33. Little Rock has become anything but a little program during the 2023-24 season. Although Little Rock’s program is still taking baby steps, the program has been setting records each week. “There is a big gratitude for all the guys for believing in what we are doing and they have bought in so many different ways,” coach Neil Erisman said. “We always believed we could be this type of team and it’s fun to see it come together.” Little Rock’s achievements have come in various ways, including nine dual wins and counting, being ranked top 25 for the first time, finishing top 10 at multiple tournaments, and more. The Trojans have been able to create these records while competing in its fifth season. “It starts with the quality and character of the kids we are recruiting,” Erisman said. “We get the right guys who love what we talk about, what we believe in, and jump wholeheartedly into it.” Even though Little Rock continues to rise, it was not always smooth sailing for the Trojans. First, Erisman and the squad had to celebrate the small victories. “It started with celebrating that we didn’t get tech falled in a match,” Erisman said. “Through that, it gave the guys a real sense of gratefulness.” In addition, Erisman and his staff had to make sure to keep confidence flowing high despite tough times. Lastly, Erisman stated the toughest thing about building Little Rock is having no mentors for the wrestlers. “In the end, the culture of your team is who they are when the coaches are not around,” Erisman said. “When you have a group of young kids coming in and buying into a dream, they don’t know it and haven’t been through it. Everything they were doing, they were learning for the first time.” Luckily, Joseph Bianchi, Tyler Brennan, and a couple of other Trojans have continued to build a culture since the first day on campus. “They didn’t quit, which goes a long way,” Erisman said. “I have some guys who stayed the course when it looked like it wasn’t possible and now they are showing these young guys. I can’t be grateful enough for the old guys who were mentally and physically strong enough to survive what we had gone through.” In addition, Little Rock’s underclassmen have provided a spark. “It’s not a greater feeling than a young guy helping change the culture towards a higher level of success,” Erisman said. “Nasir Bailey and Stephen Little have elevated the mentality and expectations. They bet on themselves and it gave some of the other guys confidence.” Bailey currently ranks 13th at 133 pounds with a 16-2 record. He is the first Little Rock freshman to win Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, to be ranked and upset a ranked wrestler. Little ranks 11th with a record of 11-2. The redshirt freshman defeated a top 5 ranked wrestler and was the first Trojan to be ranked top 10. “You can get hyped up that Nasir and Stephen will be in a match they can win,” Erisman said. “Last year, we got our first-ranked wins. It shows things are possible.” As the postseason is arriving, Little Rock’s final goal is to finish in the top 25 in the country. In addition, they have the confidence to shock their rivals and win a Pac-12 title. Although Erisman is still looking to build Little Rock into the next powerhouse, he is grateful for the first five years at Little Rock. “I have enjoyed doing this journey with all these guys, especially seeing the older guys mature,” Erisman said. “I saw some pictures and videos and they were babies when they got here. I am grateful for them because we have been through a lot together.”
