  3. Oregon State is at the minimum for NCAA men’s sports with 6. They have men’s rowing, but it’s not an NCAA Championship sport (women’s is). Unless the NCAA drops the minimum # of sports below its current threshold, it appears from a numbers position, Oregon State appears to be in a solid spot in terms of sport sponsorship.

  5. Lol when I was nine I wrestled a kid named Steve Neff from Northampton who had a tattoo of a rose on his leg. He must have been same age as me or similar. My dad would go on to say it was the only kid I ever faced who was quicker than me. He beat me in the semis and earned 1st at VEWL while I settled for third for a second time. 9 year old with tattoos are no joke. I think he ended up wrestling for ASU

  6. Back in the day if you saw a dude with a tattoo in hs you knew you were in for a bad time. Then I ran into someone with a tattoo AND a pair of the Illinois special edition Nike shoes. That was most assuredly not a fun time. He was a very, very, very bad man and he bumped up from 189 to prove how bad he was.

  7. Taking a tour, oldest son works there now. BTW: had coffee with Johnson this morning, told him I was disappointed there was no building with his name. Nike wrestling shoes were crap when Illinois first started using them, he made a lot of suggestions to improve the shoe.

  10. With the PAC 12 dissolving for football, Oregon St and Stanford could lose big television money, even if they get picked up by the Mtn West Conference, which has a significantly lesser payday than what the PAC 12 had. If they become an Independent, it could even cost them more athletic department money. I say this, because if there is less money, schools look to chop programs. I hope this doesn't screw wrestling, but I have a bad feeling that it might.

  12. A short read of Andrew McCarthy’s piece in National Review. Hat tip: Powerline. https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2023/08/the-biden-brand-racket.php THE “BIDEN BRAND” RACKET Andrew McCarthy’s weekly NRO column eludcidates “The ‘Biden brand’ racket.” It is educational and biting. He deserves a Pulitzer Prize for commentary of this quality week after week. The only problem is that it is kept behind NRO’s paywall. Somebody really ought to arrange with NRO to let McCarthy’s columns run free. As the kid says in A Thousand Clowns, “And that’s my opinion from the blue, blue sky.” What the heck is the “Biden brand”? McCarthy invokes his professional experience: “Such a nice word, brand. Not what we federal prosecutors in the Organized Crime Unit called it back in the Eighties. We were more inclined to say extortion. Or racketeering — say, running a protection racket, as in, ‘Nice business you have here, be a shame if anyone shut it down.’” Referring to a work somewhat better known than A Thousand Clowns, McCarthy writes: The twelve-minute clip is below. It is posted as part 1 of a two-part interview. Part 2 of the interview is over an hour long and is also available on the site formerly known as Twitter.

  15. In a related development, the NCAA has opened an investigation regarding allegations that Messrs. Husker_Du and Bob Dole have been promoting an illicit "sig" betting scheme on the internet. They have retained the services of prominent attorneys Vinny Gambini and Vak Attack to represent them in this matter. Most legal analysts are predicting the alleged wrong-doers will walk away either scot-free or with a Hunter Biden type sweetheart plea agreement. Stay tuned to this forum for further developments.

  18. For years now I’ve played the lottery. And in doing so, I’ve wasted so much time and money. Not only that, but I end up losing more than I win. Heck, I’ve never won! Well, okay, fine. That’s a lie. I did buy of those cheap $1 tickets before, and guess what I won?! Another ticket! Isn’t that just the bee’s knees! But that’s not even the worst of it! One day, they had a special lottery offer. The prize was millions! I went out and bought as many tickets as I could afford. Which was quite a few, mind you. Apparently, I’m not the only one who likes to gamble though. There were tons of people waiting in line after me. And oh boy! When they found out that I had bought the last ticket, things start getting interesting. People yelled, screamed, argued. Most surprising of all though, people started whipping out their money to buy the tickets from ME. At first, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t dare give up even a single ticket. What if one of them was the winner? If I gave up even one of them up, would I give up my chances of winning? But, as quickly as I thought those things, I asked myself, “What are my chance of winning really?” Like, honestly… I’ve never won a thing in my life. Except for that other ticket of course. But here, right now, I could sell the tickets I had already bought and make a tidy little profit. So, I sold them for a little more than I paid, and by the end of the day I had made about double of what I had spent. Plus, I still had two tickets with me! And being in good spirits, I went home and gave one of the tickets to my newly 18-year-old brother, absolutely free. And what happened then you ask? Well, the next thing I know, the numbers were announced and, like always, I didn’t win. But someone I know did! And that someone was my brother. The brother to whom I gave the ticket to! The brother who had never even played the lottery before that day! The brother who didn’t share a single cent with me!! Didn’t even say thank you!!! The brother who then moved out and we never heard from him again! What luck!

  25. Was on the Nike campus couple weeks ago, they've got all their buildings named after import athletes (and some other folks) who've made an impact with Nike apparel in various sports. Nike developed a wrestling shoe (a lot of input from Mark Johnson & U of Illinois). I saw no wrestling named building, could've missed it but think my guide would've pointed it out. Don't think Oregon is getting back on board but again, check the odds in Iowa.

  28. If there was a way to "accessorize" wrestling with more shit Nike could sell, then they would support wrestling more. Let's face it, wristbands, batting gloves, and a sliding glove or whatever they call it, makes more money than a single pair of wrestling shoes.

  36. Okay -- wow -- more movement today. Here's the recap: Washington & Oregon to the Big Ten Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State to the Big 12 The Big Ten will have 18 members, with four schools on the west coast. None of the west coast schools have wrestling teams. The Pac 12 -- with Colorado previously announcing its departure -- is now left with only four schools: Stanford, Cal, Oregon State, Washington State. For wrestling, the Pac 12 will have the following schools: Stanford Oregon State Cal Poly (affiliate) Cal State Bakersfield (affiliate) Arkansas at Little Rock (affiliate) However, it does not seem like the Pac 12 will survive much longer. Stanford in particular is probably desperately trying to get invited to the Big Ten. Cal probably assumes it's only shot at the Big Ten is as a companion for Stanford. For wrestling, the Big 12 will have: Iowa State Oklahoma State WVU ASU Air Force (affiliate) Cal Baptist (affiliate) Missouri (affiliate) Northern Co. (affiliate) Northern Iowa (affiliate) NDSU (affiliate) SDSU (affiliate) Utah Valley (affiliate) Wyoming (affiliate) Pretty crazy shakeup. And everyone thought NIL deals were going to ruin college sports.

  38. As the world becomes more secular, there is less need for small schools, which tend to be religiously affiliated. They rely less on whatever organizations founded them, and their older, religious, dedicated alumni are dying off, and not leaving much, if anything to these schools in their wills. ABU was tied to the Baptist Church. The solution for a lot of them is to jack up tuition (the illusion that "you get what you pay for", even if what they really mean is that school has only a local reputation for quality education) and start sports programs to bring in numbers. Most of these schools are enrollment driven, so when the tuition is too high and/or students start leaving with mountains of debt, those schools numbers go down, which then has a negative impact on short and long-term giving. Many of these schools are also caught up in the "arms race" of the modern college landscape, where boards are approving the construction of brand new buildings or other tangible additions to their campuses (rock climbing walls, gyms, and other recreational facilities) before they shore up their shrinking endowments. One other strategy is mimicking what community colleges have done, and start embracing the dual credit model of earning college credit for gen eds while in high school. Some of these small, private schools are banking (pun intended) on forming an allegiance with many of these students so that they will enroll at said institutions after graduation. It's still fairly early in the game to indicate any real stability for most schools. Sure, these schools can offer majors that everyone else has, but then the market becomes watered down, and after the last financial crisis and COVID, private schools (more specifically their tuition rates) don't have the same gravitas they used to have. The other end of that is that trends in labor change. Jobs that are popular today, may be antiquated in five years from now with the rate of technological development. Kids are learning more and more and more, too, that many employers don't value them beyond what they did that day. "The Great Resignation" or whatever term you want to use for it, hasn't disappeared, and people don't stay at jobs very long anymore, especially when they don't feel valued or supported. So, you can go to college, incur a ton of debt (in some cases), start with an employer only to have them treat you poorly or you can just go to work and eliminate that college debt, which seems to be what a lot of folks are doing. Add to that that college debt is being reported on so much these days that it is scaring the peepers out of a lot of kids whose families have scraped by n the last decade or so, and earning money right away seems to be a better option for many who were already on the proverbial fence about going to college. Anyway, I apologize for rambling. I am on both sides of this as an employee in higher education, and as a parent of four teenagers discerning what/if higher ed is right for them, and I have no easy answer for that. The only thing I can say is that I have yet to personally meet a person in any line of work who said, "earning that college degree was a waste of time." I am sorry for everyone around the ABU decision to close. That is heartbreaking news.

  42. If I was marginally more evil: STEP ONE: Buy a fake beard and farmer overalls so you can blend in. On December 23, drive to Iowa City. Wear the disguise when you pay cash to buy 6 burner phones from WalMart. I presume Iowa City has a WalMart. If not, go to Farm & Fleet or Casey's or Delbert's Five & Dime. STEP TWO: Set up fake gmail accounts for each of the 5 best Iowa wrestling starters with a recognizable variation of their Twitter or Instagram or TikTok usernames. STEP THREE: Set up 5 Draft Kings accounts using 5 different phones and 5 different usernames for the 5 wrestlers. Do this while parked outside the Iowa wrestling room, or standing next to the Gable statue at Carver. When done, put a dress on the Gable statue. I think that a dress like the one Dorothy wore in the Wizard of Oz would be cute. STEP FOUR: On December 26, place bets on the Iowa Hawkeye football team in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl game (or whatever trash bowl takes a 5-7 team). Again, this is accomplished outside the Iowa wrestling room facility or next to the Gable statue. When done, put lipstick on the Gable statue. Something sexy, but still innocent. STEP FIVE: Three days before the ILLINI/Iowa dual, use that 6th burner phone to alert the media, the Iowa compliance department and the Feds about these "illegal" bets. Do this next to an Iowa dorm, saying you're a "fellow student." Then, race over to the Gable statue and put a classy set of undergarments and a bra on it. Nothing too showy. It should say, "I like to have fun, but I do draw lines." STEP SIX: Profit!

  44. Not one bit extreme. Progressives espouse and celebrate the canon of Karl Marx, but they avoid labeling themselves as such as everyone knows Marxism isn’t palatable, given the atrocities that unavoidably come with it. 99% of the current progressive agenda is based on critical theory. Pretty much every part of their platform is about declaring one group or another to have a power advantage/ disadvantage, and think the state needs to fix it no matter how much it damages the country. What is extreme is the amount of people on the left who call Trump, MAGA and conservatives in general fascists, white nationalists, white supremacists, racists, etc., just because the politics of the right don’t declare winners and losers, which only serves to divide the nation.
