Max Dean was a returning champ that took 7th. Cardenas was a silver at U23’s and took 8th. I’d say there was depth at 197. Trumble, Beard, Braunegel, Allred, Bastida didn’t place1 point

Every STATE University should have a program. If a system, the premier School should have it, if not more of them. That a State like Texas fails to have Longhorn Wrestling is shameful. Don't know of Bo would have bee quite as good wrestling for them but forcing all those kids to go away is not good. Then we have Florida. Are gators GirlyMen afraid to roll around on the mats?1 point

It was an oft-quoted myth that the Big Ten required wrestling for membership. That speculation wasn’t rooted in anything factual, unfortunately. The only conference that requires wrestling for full all-sports membership is the Division III American Rivers Conference (formerly known as the Iowa Conference)1 point

Population of Ithaca is meaningless. Kyle Dake grew up 15 minutes from Cornell. Yianni grew up about an hour away. The PA border is an hour away from Cornell. World class academics at Cornell. On the other hand, a community college 20 minutes away if needed.1 point

Yevgeniy Bashmachenko Did become BIG literally and figuratively but believe it or not I remember him from the Prep Tournament. He wrestled for Poly Prep in 1994. Took 7th at 140! (pounds not kilos)1 point

His name was Eugene Bachemesky or something very Russian. He died a few years ago. He got permanently banned from posting on the old forums. I remember him posting a lot, mainly complaining that his parents moved to the US from Russia and he didn't like it here. He wrestled briefly for Rutgers and some other colleges. He wasn't a superstar or anything. I just remembered stumbling across some old results from the Sunkist Open or NYAC and wondered what he had been up to. Turns out he died.1 point

Important to remember that police reports are purposely written from one perspective to justify probable cause to arrest. The problem beyond the allegations for AJ in that one case is that it's not his only effing problem. People (not you necessarily) often conflate "presumption of innocence" criminally with the idea we should or do presume people innocent socially or in other facets. The standard of presumption of innocence exists in criminal cases because the government is trying to take away a person's freedom. Shit, we presume people guilty all the time. Countless examples: OJ Simpson, Casey Anthony, R. Kelly before his convictions, Michael Jackson. Right now in this country, the vast majority of Democrats are presuming Donald Trump is guilty of crimes (despite only being charged) and the vast majority of Republicans are assuming that Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are guilty of crimes (despite neither having ever even been arrested) I do not know if AJ Ferrari will be found guilty of the crime he's charged with...I do know that regardless of that outcome, I do not want him to wrestle for my favorite team. I'm just one person with an opinion though.1 point

I would say that Haines-Franek is a semi tossup, but I would say it should be a lean Haines given his youth and upward trajectory. Re: AJ, I just disagree. Again, we're talking in a hypothetical world where he can healthily make 197; I agree with you I don't think that's reality. But if he were able to make it, he could definitely beat Brooks. People are using the Taylor matches to talk about size disparity, but Ferrari, even in his college seasons, was WAY bigger than Taylor is now. Combine this with Ferrari's obvious athleticism and Brooks' lack of dynamic offense (as in he's not putting a bunch of points on high level opponents in general) and I could easily see Ferrari in this hypothetical scenario winning. The other thing I would say is that people are making a lot of assumptions about Mesenbrink. The kid is obviously a huge talent, but who is his biggest win? I'm not saying it's impossible that he's a title contender right out of the gate (although I'd say it's extremely unlikely if he's at 165), or even a surefire AA. I don't think it's reasonable to pencil him in above Kennedy or Caliendo without seeing him do some stuff at the college level first. He's a talent, but he's not Meyer Shapiro.1 point

Wyatt Ingham... He's a kid from Koy Hopke's HS. The 45 from Cali...Estrada. Flipped from Wisconsin to Iowa. 2X State Champ...not sure if he's got a loss...but he was undefeated as a Soph, no tourney as a Freshmen. Looks like he's gonna be a perfect '49 in College. I don't really pay attention to recruiting rankings that closely, but he was 70th last I recall. He's definitely a top ~15 recruit. And a kid coming in this year who I think could really surprise is Ethan Riddle. Kinda overshadowed by the likes of Sinclair, the Mirasola, Mesenbrink(who he beat as a Freshmen) and others. He's a Freshmen this year while the other two are '24.1 point

As this thread slows down hopefully someone notices and is able to sort this by event or person and add it to the Legends of the Mat forum. These type of stories that his what led to its original creation on the mat.com and definitely belong there.1 point
