OK, let's get the boring team race stuff out of the way first. Though there is a little gift in there from Wrestlestat to @jajensen09. Christmas comes late to Lincoln. For our bonus content this week I thought we would look at the late season surprises. Who are the highest ranked wrestlers that were unranked in the pre-season (using Intermat)? Take a bow Owen Trephan. The NC State heavyweight will be looking to throw his weight around come tournament time. After going 44-17 across his three freshman years (three? ahh, remember Covid? Those were good times), he is 17-3 this season with a 6 match winning streak. But the Keith "He Cannot Be Killed With Conventional Weapons" Richards Award has to go to Illinois' Michael Carr. The seventh year senior has battled back from a number of injuries to return to wrestling (though at 3-0, I am not sure how full that return is yet). You will notice there are no freshman on the list. I filtered them out as they are typically not seeded in the pre-season. So for our double bonus section let's look at the freshmen that have made the biggest jump since early in the season. While Caleb Henson and Levi Haines have the highest current rank at #8, it is Lachlan McNeil who is the Movingest and Shakingest among Movers and Shakers. Entering the rankings at #26, the Tar Heel has jump 14 spots to #12. No news here as it has been well covered, but I had a number reactions to the fact that PSU has three freshman on this list: Wow, that is some strong recruiting. That is also some damn fine coaching. This does not portend well for wrestling fans suffering under the hegemony of Penn State. This may be a good test of the "PSU outperforms at the NCAA's" phenomena. With this many freshmen this highly ranked can they keep the outperformance in tact?7 points

Foca and O’Malley are from towns right next to each other ..O’Malley senior year and Focas junior I believe O’Malley beat foca 4 times , dual , county finals , Region and state finals …O’Malley took the only college meeting with a 40 second injury default..interested to see if foca can get over that hump finally , intermat has foca 4 , O malley 5 currently so both could be AAs this year …fun fact #3 guy Mekhi Lewis won a state title over O’Malley and foca in high school4 points

This is the famous "Kolat Flip" from the PIAA HS championships in '92. But, this is not what we're here for. The other kid didn't back down from Kolat at all even with Kolat's reputation and the way Kolat was working on his arm. Go to 3:50 and notice the stall call. I don't know if that ref is still alive, but wouldn't it be great if we could get him to do a clinic on calling stalling for the current crop of NCAA refs. Also note the announcers agreed with the call. Full disclosure: Even I think this stalling call was hardly warranted here. Maybe even I have become too used to today's reffing.3 points

You are not only very, very good with the data, you are also a funny guy. Thanks for the insight and thanks for the laughs.3 points

Starocci is a cornball. “You should have killed me last time” is absolute loser shit. It’s folkstyle wrestling.3 points

Hoping to watch some qualifier matches. Anticipating some fun matches: 174 EIWA Foca v. O'Malley - danger from all positions! B1G Carter Starocci v. Labriola - maybe not as much fun, but could be a good one 157 ACC Any of Andonian v. Scott v. O'Connor 165 - will Carr wrestle O'Toole in the qualifer? 285 - B1G semis - both should be good! 184 - Soldano is only a frosh, but can be fun - wonder if he busts the bracket 157 - How good is Haines - B1G should make it pretty clear!2 points

Would really like to see a Pinto/Romero matchup at 184 but if I'm Romero and dinged up I really wouldn't want any part of Pinto. Still some good matchups in there. Would be awesome if Sasso comes out at 149 and then, "BY GOD IS THAT RIDGE LOVETT'S MUSIC?!?" and he comes down from the ceiling like Sting!2 points

Nolf is the best in my opinion because not only was he a generational talent (4 finals, 3 titles) but he also dominated. It took another even greater year from fellow generational talent Bo Nickal for Nolf to not at least get the senior year bump after Zain wrecked the field the prior two years. Not saying they were not deserving winners, but Nolf will be nothing more than fodder in a decade and that's a damn shame because he was as innovative, daring, dominant, and exciting as it got.2 points

Iowa vs Michigan Predictions by the Numbers 0 = Number of fist bumps or high fives given by Lee to Brands 26 = Over/Under on stall call signals by Brands 4 = total points scored in heavyweight match 3 = number of non-starters who do not wrestle in the dual 180/110 = Tom's blood pressure during 165 2 = number of requests for security by Bormet 2 = post-match threads that give Iowa a chance to beat PSU at the NCAA2 points

It's the 2017 WTT. Here is the link: https://www.flowrestling.org/video/5848636-furious-cael-sanderson-throws-cube-towel-and-chair-and-is-ejected-from-world-team-trials The video is pretty poor but it looks like he throws the brick and a towel at Sammy Julian before he puts the chair on the mat.2 points

Since we are digging up old coaching vids, can anyone post the video of Cael crying, throwing a chair, and getting kicked out of the World Team Trials? I believe it was 2019 right after David Taylor lost to J'den.2 points

I think we should have the top 6 Big 10 and the top 2 Big 12 in the same quarter with no cross bracketing to the consolation.1 point
-
It might increase the MFFs. If you have a binary outcome (top 2 are seeded, the rest are not) then none of the consolation matches matter for seeding purposes and should all be skipped, not just the placement matches. The only wrestlers who will want to wrestle a consolation match are those who think they may be on the bubble. You would also see a lot of conference championship matches forfeited because the initial goal of gaining a seed has been achieved. Of course, most of the first place matches will still be wrestled to improve their seed.1 point

If the night of the State of the Union address the President ducked the speech/didn't show, just think of the level of disappointment by the general public. Now image just the opposite level of disappointment and that's what is like to wrestling fans when one of our favorite wrestlers ducks.1 point
-
Well, IF Yianni wins his 4th, then I suppose you could say he was better than Nolf. 4 is better than 3. However, as others are pointing out, Nolf is clearly the most “Hodge-worthy” wrestler to not win the award since its inception. Ruth would be close behind him.1 point
-
I think it goes even deeper than just financial crime here. Imagine you showed up to your local public high school dual and you have several ducks and strategic forfeits. The consumer leaves the gym in a bewildered state and with a worse overall view of human nature.1 point
-
Compare that with the stall call from Kolat vs. Ironside in the 1996 All-Star Classic, at around 5:52. Can you imagine a ref making that call today? With :01 left in the period?1 point

No kidding.... All the teams who had guys MFF should reimburse ticket holders for the product they did not deliver.1 point

I'm still scarred from all the MFF from last year especially in Big 10 conference backsides.1 point

I’m hoping so as well. Should be a great dual with multiple matches of ranked guys.1 point

Sounds like one of them good problems to have. (Speaking of every situation in life being able to be described by a line from Sopranos/Seinfeld/Wire, in this case Marlo Stanfield from the latter.)1 point

I think we have seen this many times where a freshman is tough out of the gate, but as several have said, they start to wear down because of the grind. In HS, a kid of that caliber might go a month before even going to the 2nd period, now he's fighting for every point in the room and in competition. It's a battle that they have not seen.... and it goes on..... foorrreeevvvveeeerrrrr.1 point

Also, what happened with the Tagg brothers? I know Gabe transferred to SDSU but he hasn’t wrestled this year? Also, I never saw if the other brother landed anywhere. and what happened to Ryan Anderson? Is he not wrestling at Binghamton anymore? Or is he injured?1 point

It's amazing the about face of the Democratic party. The same party that championed the rights of everyone, even the most vile among us to have their opinion and share it freely, now with equal fervor wants to hear nothing from the other side of the isle. Dissent is now their enemy. We know what's best for your children, we know what's best for your health, we know how to run your finances. If you don't like it, your opinion is not wanted. That is the message I get, even just from people on this small message board. I don't even think they realize it.1 point

everyone complaining about twitter is out of their minds. it's lunacy. numerous people that quit (that had no outward facing roles) have issued 'statements'. lol. twitter never figured out how to turn a profit and were busting at the seams in salaries. way over staffed. idk if elon will figure out how get into the black with it, but changes certainly had to be made. as far as the 'free speech' thing....gimme a break. the left wants censorship to reduce pushback on their narrative. end of story.1 point
