Gotta love the threat of no longer being on the team when you struggle to cut an unhealthy amount of weight. At some point, the coaches should tell a kid like this they have to bump up and take their chances at a higher weight. It may leave a hole in the lineup, but reducing health risks to these kids is more important.

Several folk, myself included, though he should have gone 149 when Rivera was there, still.  MVB was there, but it should have been hia priority to fill out the weight.

This is the 3rd season in a row he's had weight troubles.  At a certain point, RU just has to come to a choice as to whether or not keeping around a liability like Sammy will ever pay off in the long run...

Let him transfer to a MAC or EIWA school and roll out as their 157lber for the next couple years.

True but last year he looked terrible anytime within an hour an a half of weigh in.  As in, he will he pinned by unranked guys type bad.  I get the sense he was making too large a cut.  I hope whether at Rutgers or another school, he gets a chance at a more appropriate weight

Weird.  He probably picked that weight, which would give coaches pretty good reason to be angry.

Undoubtedly the coaches are tracking his weight at practice daily and realize he is struggling. Some guys are like Jordan Oliver and can cut insane amounts of weight in a short time. Some are better off wrestling fat and happy like Vincenzo Joseph. No doubt Alvarez wants to fit in where it is best for the team, but he is also likely pretty miserable from struggling with weight his whole career. I think the coaches need to take that decision out of his hands for both his healthy and his happiness instead of being mad that he can't starve and dehydrate himself well enough.

(Now if he's been sneaking out for burgers and milkshakes the day before a meet then I take back all of the above)

Goodale said that Alvarez is no longer with the team.

Quote

On Sunday, Alvarez did not travel to the team’s match at Rider due to “disciplinary actions with his weight,” coach Scott Goodale said. Now, the team’s starter at 141 pounds and a former honorary All-American during the COVID-impacted season, has not practiced since and left the program, according to Goodale.

Did he say whose idea that was?

Mineo is saying that Alvarez quit the team, which makes me think he was kicked off (he bats lower than Mendoza line)

I would be amazed if Alvarez couldn't beat out MVB at 149.

It seems crazy to me that he they won't just put him up at 149 and be done with it.

He didn’t get a chance to wrestle MVB , Goodale loves the van brills , mike lost the wrestle off  to white last year and they stuck with MVB ,…Seabass transferring in then saying he would go 133 back to back years only to end up going 141 really screwed Alvarez, the first season at 133 it what it is ,but the fact the Rutgers coach’s had him try and make it again last season is insane , Alvarez has a redshirt available but instead had him cutting insane amounts of weight then threatened to kick him off the team for not making it …the whole situation is sad and a waste of High AA talent …obviously a lot of blame is on Sammy but Rutgers coaches have some egg on their face too , they haven’t done much right since with Alvarez since the day Seabass transferred in
