Running a "Dry Program"?

Reading where Taylor has OSU now as a "Dry Program". No booze allowed?

European background friends are used to wine with meals. They grew up with it and see this as normal - not drinking alcoholic beverages as rebellion. Most I know are fine with it and don't have the "demon rum" attitude - which seems to be a US thing.

Any actual statistics showing one approach is more successful than another?

From a simplicity standpoint: if you never start drinking you will never become an alcoholic. Would you use cocaine in moderation?

Yep, come from a family of alcoholics. Buried too many who died from it.

Travels & exposure to other cultures where it is normal - even if not for me - shows it can be done OK. They do have their alcoholics but aren't the US type/hardshell baptist mentality.

After all, if you have a small glass of wine with grandma and parents with a meal it is normal and sneaking out to drink isn't such an attraction.

So, moderation and exposure to it compared to total ban?

It's easy to use in moderation. Personally I stick to international rankings series tournaments and kids bday parties on the weekend. This schnoz stays clean Monday through Friday thank u very much.

If you don’t drink at all, there’s no “should I?” moments. Fewer decisions, better sleep, fewer recovery days, more mental energy for other things. That’s a pretty clear advantage for anyone trying to outperform their peers at a high level whether it’s athletics or at your job or whatever.

Yep.  Morals aren't necessary to reach the really obvious conclusion that alcohol doesn't help athletic performance.

When I was in Western Europe.  I saw plenty of folks who had issues with booze.   Generationally unemployed with complete reliance on the state to pay for them….   It’s not a us thing.

Pretty sure every team is supposed to be a dry team in-season. I thought no alcohol was an NCAA rule.

Where in Western Europe out of curiosity?  Many of those countries do have issues that stem from alcohol, but its so culturally ingrained that it tends to be defended as an institution.  Many of the people that came to the US for religious freedom when the country was being stolen from the native Americans were the weirdo types that were teetotalers .

England Ireland and I have relatives who live in Spain…   Work with a lot of Germans Russians and polish.   (And Indian… but less drinking in the Indian circles imo)…. Many of the rest fire away.

I lived in Ireland for a shorter period of time (six months) vs England (six years), but never saw any attitude that rejected alcohol like what we have here in the US.  It could have been a matter of the circles we ran in or just the times we lived there.

Yep we got an OP saying he is "reading" it but won't tell us where he read it. Nothing wrong with dry and kids can't legally drink tell about jr year anyway but we don't know this to be true with DT's program.

One dude I met claimed his wife said beer isn’t drinking.  He had to sleep on the couch if he drank whiskey.  I found that odd.

Alcohol is on the decline these days among the youngest segments of consumers, with more kids not drinking by choice. Same with traditional tobacco. Bigger challenge might be cannabis, which I think the NCAA now allows. Dunno if individual schools have been relaxing the rules as well. Imagine how recreational weed might mess with weight cutting, lol.

Haven’t people.   Athletes.   Humans smoked tons of weed over the years?  I know I saw plenty in college.   Most professionals I know smoke it / eat it too.  I do wonder if they do it more now as it’s “legal” ish.   @WrestlingRasta

Cael did the same thing at PSU when he started. It was a way to establish a culture, but obviously it's not enforced 100% at PSU. I imagine Taylor is just doing the same thing that Cael did to start things out and change the culture (very much needed there after Ferrari).
