The Cy Hawk dual was eventful this weekend. At 157 Jaocri Teemer sustained what looked like an injury serious enough to keep him out of action for months, if not the season, Patrick Kennedy replaced Nelson Brands at 174 and ran roughshod over an old teammate, and Angelo Ferrari used a competition date at 184.

With Teemer out, and Nelson Brands and Gabe Arnold sitting (for at least one match), what does the Iowa lineup look like going forward?

  • 157 - Wrestlestat has only one back up listed at 157 (Isaiah Fenton), but they have multiple at 149 (Caleb Rathjen and Victor Voinovich being the highest ranked). Do they bump a backup up a weight? Do they try to survive with Fenton and hope Teemer makes it back? Do they solve logjams at higher weights by having guys cut (if they even can)?
  • 174 - Speaking of higher weights. While Brands was coming off a techfall of his own, Kennedy looked very good teching Aidan Riggins. In the past Gabe Arnold was a 174 who his father said had to bust his ass to get bigger for this year. Does Caliendo attempt a drop to 157, Kennedy to 165, and Arnold to 174? Seems unlikely, but maybe?
  • 184 - Does the Teemer injury actually make it more likely that they pull Ferrari's redshirt and go with the everyone cut weight strategy? I assume the decision to wrestle Ferrari at 184 instead of Arnold was made prior to the Teemer injury, so probably one had nothing to do with the other over the weekend, but maybe it will going forward.

That is a lot of lineup flexibility for Iowa. How do you think they use it?

157 is a huge mystery for the time being.

I sadly think that Iowa will have a similar thing happen with Brands at 174 as Okie State had with Smith's son a few years back.  May not be the best guy to put out there, but nepotism be damned.

Arnold at 184.

I think when all is said and done we will see 157 Teemer, 165 Caliendo, 174 Kennedy, 184 Arnold at Big Tens.

Optimal lineup for Iowa, if they can swing it (w/o Teemer and Brands)

Caliendo 157

Kennedy 165

Arnold 174

Ferrari 184

I agree with this and I think Caliendo would win 157

I highly doubt all these guys are certified a weight class down.

This was the offseason talk before they brought in Teemer. Have to imagine the pull would be too big for Caliendo or else they would not have ever brought Teemer in.

Push for many going down a weight class. It worked so well for Oklahoma State under John Smith, didn't it?

Agree with this. 157 might be more open, but there's no reason for Cal to suck down a weight when he could win 165. We'll see if he closes the gap with MM this season. Likely higher finish than Kennedy, anyway.

Do we have any actual info on Teemer's injury?

Negative. The only info out of Carver is that Teemer is a cool cat........and they like cool cats.
