thems the rules

The Stazi had rules.  They were crap too.

Jaywalking is a crime.  Does the NCAA make them sign a morality clause which can get them banned for that also?  This is as outrageous as the Ohio State football "scandal" several years ago when young men traded their own property (college bowl game swag) for goods and services (tattoos, etc) they preferred to have.  That was crap also.

I’m halfway playing devils advocate here. But gambling and jay walking isn’t even an apple to oranges comparison. It’s apples to elephants.

There’s a reason why the NFL and other professional organizations have a no tolerance policy as well (remember Calvin Ridley missing an entire season in a sport where the average career lasts about 3 years?). There are *infinite* opportunities for defrauding a billion dollar industry if you have folks betting from the inside. When I wrestled at UNC, I had a lot of classes with other sports players. I was really close with a couple cornerbacks on the football team and my suite mate was a walk on basketball player. I knew things going on with those teams days and weeks before the public. See where this could be a problem? I could bet a line with information that hasn’t been made public yet.

I loathe the NCAA. They do so much wrong. But a no gambling period rule is somewhat reasonable. Now we can argue all day long if the punishment was too much, but I get the reasoning at least.

Need to change the rules not the enforcement, enforcement should be consistent.

But even that is inconsistent. They changed the enforcement AFTER they were alerted to the situation and made the change retroactive to just before the violations occured while delaying revealing what happened until after their announced enforcement changes. They are ridiculously conflicted in this entire situation.

What college team do you support?  Pretend he wrestled for them.   Then you tell me the correct punishment in your eyes for what he did.

I've already said losing the rest of his career is too harsh of a punishment imo.  I knew there would be problems once online betting became legal in Iowa.  It sucks that only male's at Iowa and ISU were targets of the D.A.  They were hand picked.  No female's? No UNI? Drake? Coe? Wartburg?

I've accepted the ruling and am ready to move forward without Nelson Brands and Tony Cassioppi this year.  Both of them are the 3rd-4th best wrestlers at their respective weights aswell.  Big losses for Iowa. Life is unfair. Time to move forward

That's the thing, it shouldn't matter if its my favorite team, enforcement should be consistent.  You want examples, here's examples.

A) Let's take MI football coach, report is level 1 violations and he lied to NCAA to try and get out of it.  I say he should lose the full season, he'll still get paid, players can still play.  He & Mi want to self serve a 3 game suspension, thats no penalty (unless you put it at the end of the year) MI can prob win there first 3 games with no coaches, QB calls the offense, LB calls defense.

B) The Iowa (St & U) if you bet on multiple teams, meaning like Brands football, baseball, tennis etc or you bet on your own team or another of your own school teams and you tried to hide/destroy evidence then full season.  If you only bet on a couple professional teams like NFL or MLB and you came clean then first semester good to go Jan 1.

And I have a problem with that.  Let's agree to agree again.  🙂

I am too disagreeable to agree even when we agree. Can we agree on that? If your answer is yes, then I disagree.

What a complete moron for tweeting that out. No sympathy - if anybody on the team should know better, it's him. There are reasons athletes are barred from gambling on sports and if an athlete is dumb enough to jeopardize their entire career over a few quick bucks, then they deserve the punishment.

For those of you saying it's too harsh, suspending him from a meaningless dual season where half the wrestlers sit out already is not a sufficient punishment. That'd be like Harbaugh's meaningless suspension.

Agreed.

But I also agree with myself that they are crappy rules. The NCAA, by the way, also agrees with me on that. We just differ in degree. If they did not agree with me they would not have changed the punishments retroactive to immediately before these crimes.

one of the greatest things i've ever seen on these boards. well done.

i think missing one year of eligibility is a fair punishment. anything less than a loss of 1 ncaa tournament is meaningless.

i just wish it wasn't their last year of eligibility.

I think I am on an island here, but I think it is a bunch of crap that these guys got these punishments. The punishment does not fit the crime in my decidedly not humble opinion.

No island brother.  I'm with you.

Well maybe it's an archipelago 🤔

Maybe he is fishing for an NIL deal from an online casino?  I think Pete Rose does endorsements for casinos.

On Pete. He agreed to the lifetime ban and no Hall of Fame eligibility. Now he whines about what he agreed to. Brands is dumber than a cooler full of night crawlers and his posts show it.

Just like all those nurses agreed to take a medical experiment shot and all those Canadians were not forced to do it.  Just ask Justin Castro.

"Agreed" under duress is not agreeing.  It is capitulating.  Pete should be in the Hall of Fame.  Write all about his failures as a man on his plaque or in a special section of the Hall if you want but his accomplishments should not be denied.  It is revisionist history and it is horrible.
