Who would be more desired as a college head coach: Spencer or Jordan?

Recommended Posts

Spencer had more NCAA success and is better known among young kids.  He also wrestled for a higher profile program in Iowa.  Jordan obviously has the Olympic and World success and less NCAA success.  He's also closer to retirement as a wrestler.

Has Burroughs ever mentioned a desire to coach?  We know Spencer has mentioned he would like to be Iowa's next head coach/AD.

Like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

Spencer was very good on the mat. Impressive given his physical challenges with the knees.

His downside is being known as a quitter. Can't win a 4th title, take my marbles and go home! He did not wrestle back, he quit. No matter the reason - he quit.

Jordan Burroughs is a winner, plain and simple.

Don't know if either can actually run a program and coach but would choose Burroughs any day over the Squawkeye.

Hmm...

Tanxs to Tripnsweep's choice (of clothing accessories,) I'm gonna go w/ the Yellow Onion.

You can plug him in there anywhere, and the product will be a success, because YO is the Work Horse! (Of course!)

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I'd say Metcalf is more likely to be the HC of Iowa than Lee.

If the job was open right now I’d agree.  But the Brands brothers aren’t going anywhere for a little while.  By the time Lee is done competing and gets a couple years assisting maybe they will though.

With the wild success in NCAA and International wrestling circles, Casey Cunningham would have been an obvious choice right?

Who would be the most coveted middle weight assistant coach in the nation?   I say Cunningham.    But he was not a 4 timer or even a 3 timer.  He was not internationally decorated but is an incredible coaching talent.   It is not always the best of the best that make great coaches.

Ted Williams was one of the greatest hitters of all times. He didn't last long as a manager, though, because he couldn't understand why everyone couldn't hit .400 like him.

wrestling seems to be the exceptions....Cael, John Smith, Gable, Zeke Jones, etc etc etc. Great wrestlers tend to be great wrestling coaches. Not sure why wrestling is the exception.

Many great wrestlers were not great coaches. Kevin Jackson comes to mind here as a head coach. A lot of promise and talent but never quite got the team firing on all cylinders. Sammy Henson and so many others somehow can't get the team to perform. Cael, Smith, Gable, Jones - they are the exception, not the rule.

What other sport finds the coach going live against their athletes in practice? Or, in actual competition - like Midlands? The number of good coaches who spend actual mat time with their wrestlers is a surprise to many not familiar with the sport.

For many who pick a school with an accomplished coach the excitement of going live with that coach on the mat is part of the attraction. Guys went with Gable knowing they could roll with him on the mat. Myron Roderick, John Smith and so many others do/did the same. Not many swimming/football/basketball coaches go live with their athletes. A number of wrestling coaches do.

I think he has been the obvious choice for a while. The rumor is that he gets paid like a head coach (though I assume not like Tom Brands). And perhaps he has no interest in the admin duties of a head coach.

I also assume he has been contacted about many openings. The fact that Cael Sanderson has kept that staff together is another testiment to his coaching greatness.

The Brands are going to stay several years past their expiration date.  They will continue to have respectable finishes at the NCAA in the top 3 or 4 for  their tenure (Thanks to Bob). They will keep the fan base happy by naming Spencer as an assistant, then when rumblings start to happen, Spencer will be named the "Associate Head Coach" to quiet people down. He will stay in this capacity for several years until the Brands farewell tour year which will be when they are in their early-mid 60's. Tom will stay on in some made up position in the athletic department in an "advisory" role. Terry will run out of Carver one last time, hop the fence, and keep going, resulting in a "Whatever Happened to Terry Brands" thread by Jimmy.
