Rosselli Resigns

Stunned Roselli couldn't make it work at OU. "Resources" (i.e. money) are not a problem at the school. And, while potential declines in the in-state talent pool may be impacting them and OSU, this program should be much. much better.

I'm old enough to remember when the OU fans/alums were disappointed with the 2nd place performances under Stan Abel. Don't they wish they had those years now.

Recall the year they had 3 champs, scored over 100 points, and finished 3rd under Abel. Crazy. Great teams back then.

Kind of seems impeccable timing that year after Teyon Ware arrives Lou resigns.

I thought Lou was doing a good job up until this year. This year they finished with 6 points and 5 of their 7 qualifiers were from the transfer portal (Prata, Henson, Shwartz, Moore, Nijenhuis). I don't know what that says about his recruiting, but if you were a high school senior wouldn't that give you a bit of pause.

Also, as of next year only 15 of the 38  kids on the team are from OK and only 2 of 10 starters.  I know they kind of always lose out on the best OK talent to OSU. They haven't had a AA from OK since 2011. It is not a sustainable model to rely on getting out of state kids, especially from states like PA, OH and CA. Those states have many college options they can attend.

I think Teyon Ware would be a perfect choice to take over the program. His assistant coaching stint at Wyoming produced many AA's and qualifiers (and one of them is at OU because of him).

John Smith might be available...

In the past OU would never hire an Aggie. If John Smith were available, that might be a different story. I like Branch and have been surprised that UW didn't have more success under Branch.

Seems like a forced resignation to me. Honestly, not sure if they will ever be able to get back to the powerhouse they once were no matter who they hire. I think Lou and Cody were both great coaches. Just not enough talent in Oklahoma to be spread between two top programs. Unless they really go big and get someone that will vault them above Okie State, I suspect they will see similar success out of the next coach.

Jared Frayer is likely the top target. Hopefully he stays at VT

Don’t know if he’s a target or not but agree that he hopefully does not leave Tech. And keep the other Sooner Brewer around Blacksburg too.

To be fair at this point “vaulting them above Okie State” would only mean about 30 team points at NCAAs next year.

Haha true… but I meant more along the lines as the prestigious traditional program. Although, if there were ever a time to try to surpass OSU in that regard it may be now. Especially if OSU decides to hang on to John Smith until he decides to retires. I have a ton of respect for Smith and he is an all time great coach… just think its hard for someone his age to stay connected. So maybe OU should go all in and make big hire?

Word is that Roselli had no choice in the matter but to resign. I’m not sure what more he could have done with the talent pool coming out of Oklahoma in the last 15 years. Almost knocked off Oklahoma State in their opening bedlam match this season. He did well in the transfer portal and was looking to build on that.
Looks like a perfect fit for Teyon Ware, i’d like to see OU give him the job. He did a great job at Wyoming and the guys seem to love him.  I’m sure Frayer is in the discussion as well and is looking for a Head Coaching spot where he has the reigns. Not going to happen anytime soon at V Tech where he is behind Robie who has been voted Top ACC coach four out of seven years.   No matter who they choose, it’s going to be a tall order getting OU back where they belong. Oklahoma wrestling looks to be coming back in the youth levels and will benefit the local programs in years to come. Central Oklahoma won their first National Title since 2007 and that program is a direct reflection of where Oklahoma wrestling is as a whole, with most of their talent being local.
Whoever they choose will have a tall order in store, however it’s a highly coveted job with no shortage of $ and supporters, lots of Coaches will want.
