Are you basing this on what they went on to do internationally like Hidlay, or completely contained to their college career... like Zaputil and Fix

Penn's best is probably Slay.

Lehigh's might be Trenge.

Cornell's might be Shapiro.

Penn State's could be Duke, or Kasak, or Ono, or maybe VanNess?

Bryan Snyder - Nebraska

One of the most decorated wrestlers in program history, Snyder owns the best winning percentage all-time at Nebraska with a mark of .925, compiling a 136-11 record from 1999 to 2002. A member of Nebraska’s 100-win club, he claimed All-America accolades and a Big 12 championship all four years, while finishing as the NCAA runner-up at 157 pounds in 2001 and 2002.

He amassed more than 30 wins in a season three times, including his 43-3 record as a sophomore that stands as the second-best single-season mark in school history.

For Lehigh- Trenge mentioned earlier. His best year to win might have been his freshman year when he had the retinal injury and he had beaten both finalists.

Colin Kilrain- 3x 3rd. Seeded 3rd/1st/1st. Lost 12-11 to Ed Banach in semis soph year.

Joe Peritore- 2nd/2nd/3rd. Both 2nds were to 2x Olympic Gold and 3x NCAA 1st Yojiro Uetake.

Some of you know this story (mostly the Lehigh people). His junior year final had Uetake winning but he was taking it easy (they knew each other). The ref called Uetake for stalling. Uetake says- "Sorry Joe" and pinned him.  As Peritore walked off the mat and passed the ref- he told him- "Next time mind you own f$%^in' business!"

I believe Sebastian Rivera.

here are some of his college wins over national champions:
Spencer Lee (X2)
Vito Arujau (X2)
Patrick Glory
Seth Gross
Roman Bravo-Young

Other wins over all americans:
Real Woods
Zeke Moisey
Chad Red (X2)
Clay Carlson
Ronnie Bresser (X2)
Jake Bergeland
Grant Willits
Dylan D'Emilio
Dylan Duncan (X2)
Rayvon Foley (X2)
Drew Hildebrandt
Sean Russell
Louie Hayes

Who else has seven official college wins against guys who were or would become champions?  But without having one of their own?  Gotta be seabass

Trenge is the one my heart wanted to vote for.  And maybe he is the choice.  Being in a class with Cael and Cormier is tough

Nebraska has chosen well when they have scouted the Lehigh Valley

Caldwell always gets mentioned but I'm not sure that I necessarily understand why. Other than the one Andrew Howe win at NCAAs did he have any other notable wins that would separate him from just being a good guy that gets extra credit for losing to legends? I think of Caldwell similarly to guys like Hayden Hidlay and Brandon Sorenson. Very good but it doesn't necessarily seem like he was should have won a title.

Gilman was someone who was a bonafide contender all 3 years he was at the tournament, Fix was arguably the favorite in both his freshman and sophomore years and I thought he would get RBY his junior year as well. James Green was another that I absolutely thought would win a title but didn't.

It's hard for me to consider someone one of the best to never win just because they were the second or third best guy in a weight for multiple years. It's more compelling of a case for me when someone was either the favorite and gets upset or someone that had many wins over elite guys but just for whatever reason never made it to the top of the podium (ala Seabass).

Didn't somebody call him "the poor man's Dake"?

Morgan Macintosh gotta be in the Penn St conversation; beat Kyle Snyder and J'den Cox in the same post season and still didn't win NCAAs

Until someone who didn't win an NCAA  championship finishes with more world championships than Trent Hidlay, I believe this discussion is closed. The topic should be shifted to "second-best to never win an NCAA championship."

And the answer to that is either Tyler Caldwell or Mike Poeta.

i am an idiot on the internet

Munoz, whom he beat, not Cormier. (I think)

I ran into Trenge a few years ago....he was a lot smaller than I thought he would be....make of that what you will.

Christian Pyle's picks seemed reasonable. I would have went with Sebastian Rivera over Montell Marion at 141 but that is splitting hairs. He did mention SeaBass at 125, though behind Gilman.

Seabass beating Lee convincingly twice is narratively inconvenient and therefore one of the lost factoids of wrestling. Wasn't it dual and midlands? what happened at big tens?

The 2nd win was at Big Tens. Brands sat Lee against Northwestern in the dual, which was weak.

He also beat Gross, RBY, and Vito.
