He has always seemed like a good coach who really cares about his kids. Works hard for them. A tireless promoter for his team and school. When it is finally time to go I hope he knows it and doesn't hang on like Bucky Maughan at NDSU.

How many 5x All-Americans are there?
AgaveMaria replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Carlton Haselrig - 7 times. -
We saw Dan Gable make history. Maybe it is time for the Squawkeyes to try it again? After all, the Iowa guys who are hired to coach look good and then go flat.

To listen to the wind sweeping down the plain. To watch the waving wheat and smell it when the wind comes right behind the rain. They will find girlfriends and sit alone and watch a hawk making lazy circles in the sky. Compared to Penn State? Who wouldn't jump at the chance to go there?

Meyer Shapiro Steroids Accusation

If he knows who, say who. Otherwise he is tarnishing a lot of wrestlers who don't use. -
PSU's Other Record Setting Performances
AgaveMaria replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
So far Cael & Co aren't even half way to a tie with Dan Gable and 9 titles in a row. What he is doing puts him at the level of Gable but I don't think 9 in a row will happen for PSU. -

Is Ridge Lovett a Mormon? Post Falls, Idaho has a lot of them. His team mate Hardy is and even served a two year Mormon mission. -
At least five times. Maybe the Orange Peril will use the Tournament for his PR blasts inbetween getting more treatments to enhance the Orange color? Then he can claim to be a great Oklahoma State University fan - showing school colors?

how great were the champs in their interviews?

Yep, God likes one and favors him and makes sure all the others lose? -
How much does Gable regret coming back now?
AgaveMaria replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Quite different from Dan Gable. Dan had a perfect record. Steveson does not. Dan did not win Olympic Gold and then punk out on wrestling at worlds later. Dan never, ever became a sport whore/rassl'n slob for dollars. There is hope for Steveson but he made his own bed. -
He is on the sideline while Spratley is wrestling in the Semi Finals - and he is flossing/cleaning/picking his teeth? What, next he'll start brushing them or digging ear wax or picking his nose? Biting into a big slice of Pizza and then giving an interview while chewing? Come on coach - it is nauseating.

Mark Schultz? A few losses in the mix, but not when it was all on the line. Then add in 3 World Titles. One reason I put him up is Schultz vs Banach. Mark went up a weight to knock off Ed Banach who was being heralded as a great 4 timer - before he had won his 3rd NCAA title. From Wikipedia. Schultz was voted by his peers "College Wrestler of the decade" in the book "The Golden Era of Amateur Wrestling: 1980's" by Reginald Rowe. Schultz attended UCLA and went 18-8 at 150 & 158 lbs his freshman year. In the summer of 1979 Mark and Dave Schultz made the Junior World Team, met Oklahoma Assistant coach Jim Humphrey who convinced them to transfer to Oklahoma University. In August, 1979 Mark and Dave Schultz transferred to the University of Oklahoma & redshirted. During Mark and Dave's redshirt year Dave won every tournament he entered while Mark failed to place at every tournament. Mark was unranked among the top 20 wrestlers in the nation until November 1980 when Schultz defeated #1 ranked Mike DeAnna 8-1 in the finals of the Great Plains Tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska. Schultz went from being unranked one week to ranked 2nd the next week. In the following three years (1981–83) Mark won three NCAA titles. Schultz was the NCAA Champion his sophomore year at 167 lbs. He defeated his Great Plains opponent, Iowa Hawkeye senior Mike DeAnna 10-4 in the 1981 NCAA Finals in Princeton, NJ. Matt Reiss, 1980 NCAA Champion at 167 lbs took 8th at 167 in 1981. Schultz moved up to 177 lbs his junior year where he faced another Iowa Hawkeye in the NCAA finals, two-time NCAA Champion (1980, 1981) Ed Banach.[8] Schultz had lost to Banach 4 times before 1982. Schultz said Banach was the best conditioned wrestler he ever faced and saw him run a mile in about 5 minutes. A month before the 1982 NCAA's Schultz defeated Banach 10-9 in the Oklahoma vs. Iowa dual meet at Lloyd Noble Arena. The 2 teams ended the dual in a 19-19 tie. In 1982 the 1980 NCAA Champion at 167 lbs, Matt Reiss, moved up weight which meant there were 4 NCAA titles represented at 177 lbs.[9] Banach was exceptional defeating every opponent except one in the 1980, 1981, and 1982 NCAA's by fall or superior decision. Banach was on track to become the first 4-time NCAA champion in history; however, Schultz won 16-8 in "one of, if not the best, NCAA finals match of all time"[10] and was named Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.[11] In 1983 Schultz set the University of Oklahoma record for most victories (27) in an undefeated season and was voted Oklahoma University Student-Athlete of the year. In the 1983 NCAA's in Oklahoma City, Schultz defeated Duane Goldman 4-2, the 3rd Iowa Hawkeye he faced in the NCAA finals.

Who do you want to see LOSE the most at NCAAs?
AgaveMaria replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
He punked out of Worlds after narrowly winning Olympic Gold. Knew if he went to Worlds and didn't win it would cost him too much money. Now after failing at pro rassl'n & pro football he comes back to real wrestling. -
"Last season’s winner Spencer Lee of Iowa and Gable Steveson of Minnesota wound up in a virtual tie" ----------------------------- "virtual tie" is not a tie. It is engineering a reason to elevate one to the status of the other.

Iowa had never won an NCAA title before Gary Kurdelmeier took over. He brought in Dan Gable from Iowa State. Actually, recruited him & got the commitment before ISU made an offer. Then Iowa took off and the rest is history. Cael was at ISU as an assistant coach under Bobby Douglas. Then make head coach. Did well and moved on to Penn State and the rest is history. How much credit for Danny & Cael as great coaches to Gary and Bobby?

You won't see Askren become head Coach at Wisconsin. Head Coach is a job. He won't put up with all that is involved. Time on the mat & part time coaching/academy stuff is for him. Not a full time job with all its pressures.

Robles is getting better all the time. Wish they would put John Smith on the job. More insightful & not afraid to say what he sees.

Cael & Heskett - who do you think would have been a 4timer?
AgaveMaria replied to AgaveMaria's topic in College Wrestling
It is amazing that Joe did what he did with his health problems. If they had caught them before College he never would have seen the mat. One of my favorite wrestlers & a good guy. At the time I figured Joe would have the better career. Cael amazed us all & he continues to do so. He and Joe made a good package at Iowa State. -
Cael Sanderson and Joe Heskett both enrolled at Iowa State. Both at the top of the recruiting class, with Heskett at the time rated a bit higher than Sanderson. Heskett had beat Sanderson at the Reno Tournament the year before in High School. At the time - which would you have put your betting dollars on to be a 4 time NCAA Champ?

Yojo wrestled when Freshmen were not elegible. He wrestled and won Olympic Gold in 1964 after his Sophomore season, before his Junior season. I'll go with Myron Roderick (his coach) and his statement: "I never saw him tested on the mat". As a Graduate Assistent Yojo would get frustrated with the team as none of them could keep up with him in warmups. He won his second Olympic Gold in 1968 - with a dislocated shoulder. He wasn't flashy. He did not pile up points - part of his philosophy of not humiliating opponents. He did hurt an opponent bad one time - this after the referee called him for stalling. After the call he went to work and ground him into the mat and punished him. As this wrestler later told me "he hurt me bad". On my all time list I have Yojo #1 - in US College wrestling. Internationally it has to be Osamu Watanabe. Supposedly 186-0(Encyclopedia Brittanica) and never gave up a Takedown. Yojo and Watanabe both wrestled for Japan in Freestyle.

It is coming. Penn State has a nice history with Cael & Co of wrestling matches to help some schools. They show up & the gym is packed with fans. Even the hometown folks knowing PSU is probably going to shellac their team, hosting PSU helps promote the sport & gives their program a boost. With former PSU great David Taylor now coaching OSO - this one will happen. Plenty of open dates for them to meet in a home & home format. It is coming, no doubt about it.

Steveson first 4X Big Ten HWT champion in history?

What are we supposed to think about Tom Ryan?
AgaveMaria replied to Fletcher's topic in College Wrestling
BruceyB wrote: " but I think that's just more of an embarrassing heat of the moment reaction than a depiction of who he is as a coach, mentor, and man" It is those "heat of the moment" reactions and actions that define us. They show who we really are, positive and negative. That they are not usually on display - just how it is. Bottle it up & only show it under pressure. Just like those who are drunk and do stupid stuff "That's not who I am". Sure it is - you show it - and later realize the real you came out. That said, Ryan is a damn good coach. All who associate with him have so many positive things to say about him that this coming out as a negative is just part of a complex man. This is a small part - it is not like AJ Ferrari where the negative overrides almost all the positive, or Andrew Long where the negative was so strong it ended up with him in prison. Knowing Ryan isn't perfect is not a surprise. Watching him through the years I would gladly send my kids to wrestle for him if they had the talent. He isn't perfect. The only perfect one - is a myth. Tom is real and a positive force in College Wrestling. (it's not like he throws chairs, is it?)
