  1. This is the one I remember so well, as the guy sitting next to me in the stands kept yelling "spladle, splade", and I thought he was crazy....this went on for a little while until finally Kelly hit the spladle. At that point I asked "how did you know that?" He said, we have been working on that at practice for some time. The guy and I became good friends....I'm leaving him nameless on purpose! He too was a great wrestler....all-american/World Cup team, etc. I will never forget it.
  2. Well, in 1994, they only seeded 12 guys, but using this years brackets, If I insert Mark Branch from 1994/167 into the same slot this year, against the number 2 seed, Mark Branch was the was the 31st seed. That year he came in with a record of 8-9 and won his first national title. He then went 2-2-1. He is currently the Head Coach at Wyoming.
  3. Did Medicine Man get commissioned to do the above photo???
  4. I understand what you guys are saying, but there is a rich tradition at Northwestern of hosting the MIdlands Championships, Big Tens and even the NCAA Championships in 1970 as well as the first ever USA/USSR dual meet in America held in what used to be McGaw Hall, renovated into Welsh-Ryan Arena. The director of the Midlands used to be the head coach for a long time at NW/Tim Cysewski. I'm sure if it ends up in Welsh-Ryan Arena, there is a reason for it.
  5. I heard from a reliable source that it will be at Welsh-Ryan Arena not at the convention center, which they have had the Midlands tournament at the last couple of years.
  6. One of the greatest "big guy matches" I ever saw was Mark Coleman (OSU) vs. Dave Mariola (MSU) Ohio Open .....it was a battle similar to the great Ed Banach vs. Mark Schultz match (1982 NCAA finals) maybe not all upper body. Both Ohio guys too. Wish Mark the best....hoping for a great recovery.
  7. I didn't go this year but a friend was there and said the attendance was poor. I've been to all the NCAA's in Maryland and came away with a positive experience...the first one for me there was 1972.
  8. I'd say Burley .....1-2-2-1
  9. Amen....I have a lot of friends excited about the increase in coverage!!!
  10. Jimmy Carr had a great double leg from outside or with an armdrag to a double leg.
  11. I'm always at NCAA's....#45, 39 in row, and Mallory was D2 (Montclair State)....his coach was Jim Peckham, who along with Bill Wieck (Mt. Carmel,ILL.) coached some of the USA teams in the early 70's.
  12. I witnessed it....the reaction was ......WOW, and near the top of this page the question was asked about 7th seeds taking first.....well, the year Daniels won it a 118, Kenny Mallory won it at 134 and was the 8th seed. He beat Frank DeAngelis in the finals who was unseeded.
  13. THANKS!!
  14. Agreed. I hated it. Brilliant performances by the actors but definitely not a movie to watch more than once. It's like watching "The Road". But remember, there is Foxcatcher AND Team Foxcatcher, as well as Prince of Pennsylvania (ESPN 30 for 30)....you may like them much better if you haven't already seen them.
  15. I'll call it a trilogy for Dave Schultz....2 were mentioned Foxcatcher and Team Foxcatcher, but I didn't see the third one mentioned....ESPN's "Prince of Pennsylvania".....Fadz
  16. Age is just a number! Kind of nice being my age....great career/life including 45 NCAA Championships/39 in a row, many Big Tens, World Cups, State tournaments in 2 states, dual and individual, and much more. Uncountable number of clinics both worked and attended. Aches and pains, but would do it all over again.
  17. Actually, TJ Hill went to Cal State Fullerton.
  18. Some great names there!
  19. I haven't seen Michigan mentioned yet, and I'm not sure there is a definitive criteria, so I'll throw out some names and not in any order... Andre Metzger 2 time NCAA Champion 3 time All American World Silver Medalist World Championships S B B Chris Taylor 2 time NCAA Champion Olympic Bronze Medalist Mark Churella 3 time NCAA Champion one of the first 4 time all americans. 3-1-1-1 Originator/Director of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Steve Fraser 2 time All American America's first Olympic Gold Medalist in GR Wrestling Jimmy Jackson 3 time NCAA Champion Brent Metcalf 2 Time NCAA Champion/3 time finalist 4 time state champion/4 state championship teams Jarrett Hubbard 2 Time NCAA Champion the second ever 4 time all american Greg Johnson 3 Time NCAA Champion
  20. David was born in Reno, Nevada, but wrestled all 4 years at St. Paris Graham, OH.
