In an attempt to keep my self sane and use some of the things I have to at work for a good cause I've set out to do some research on wrestling. I've been working with @Wrestleknownothing and @cowcards on some NCAA results, more on that later. But...the world championship previews and in particular the discussions of athletes that have moved across weight classes had me wondering how common that is? And who does it the most? And is there anything we can learn from it? I haven't yet answered those questions, but I manged to mangle together some results from UWW results ( ~8,000). I put them in a network connecting wrestlers by bouts and then ran some algorithms to group them. No surprise the clusters mostly aligned to weight classes. Population density. With population density you have a number of factors. The more people you have, the more people you are likely to have that are willing to commit crimes. Just a matter of numbers. Hiding in plain sight. If you have three people in a group, and one of them is f***ing up, that person is more likely to be seen than if they are 1 in a group of 100. The idea you are less likely to get ‘caught’ will make some more willing to try to take the short route. More targets. If you don’t want to earn living and would rather rob people, are you going to choose a location that has 50,000 targets to choose from, or a compacted location that has five million? We really need to stop the narrative with how "hard" it is to for these senior level guys to compete. They make scratch weight like 3 times between April and September and half of them don't compete more than a couple of other times during the other 7 months out of the year. IMO guys don't compete more because the travel to most overseas tournaments is pretty brutal if you coming from the Americas which likely makes guys not want to do it more than once or twice a year, and also you had the stalwarts of USA wrestling winning gold medals by using the minimal competition method. Personally, I can't imagine just practicing every day and only getting to actually compete 2 or 3 times a year. I'd think having a one-off match would be more invigorating for a world teamers training than disruptive.
