It makes it meaningless don't you think? If athletes are getting paid then why would they get free tuition etc.? They should probably pay full cost like everybody else.3 points

re: AJ Heeg and Oklahoma State guys. His dad posted on Twitter that John Smith was not considered his coach at that point in time - it was interim coach Coleman Scott until May 11th. So the clock starts again from there.1 point

Interesting article on Dake today about turning down a massive offer to coach. He will be the next big name head coach next Spring. Appears this is the final ride. As a side note - Read that it was Ok State before Smith decided to come back for one more year. However, I need to find where that was said. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/24/us-olympian-turned-down-massive-job-to-pursue-gold-medal-dream.html1 point

I kinda hate all this new attention. Where were you folks when Jamal Parks spent his entire sr year setting up a shot?1 point

It should be from the time the new coach is named. If the old coach is changing schools, that’s one thing, but Smith retired, and the wrestlers can’t go with him.1 point

Perhaps this will drive universities to focus much more on academics and use sports as a means to enhance physical well being and the character of its students as they prepare for more traditional careers. Will be more like club sports. Relatively low cost … but no longer a major distraction. Will also find ways to cut bloat and reduce the major arms race expenditures on athletic facilities. (Maybe for some. I bet a few will really lean into this type of ruling and be more like, and care more about being, a professional sports business, than a university.)1 point

They are doing work that generates revenue for the University, just like the faculty and staff. Education is not an unusual benefit for an employer to provide. My employer is a for profit company and they pay me a salary and also have a tuition reimbursement benefit. A college presumably can provide the education at a lower cost than other employers.1 point

It means bad news for all programs outside of the B1G and SEC, and for non-revenue sports across the board. Probably very bad news for a lot of athletic department staff. The settlement is $2.8B over the next 10 years in NIL backpay to athletes. All D1 athletes going back to 2016 are eligible to join the settlement class and receive a share. The NCAA will be paying 40% ($1.12B) of the total cost. P5 schools will pay 24% ($672M), and the rest of the D1 will be on the hook for 36% ($1.01B). Outside of the backpay, schools will need to setup a revenue-sharing framework with its athletes. Details TBD, but power conference schools are making plans to share 20% or more of their media revenues with players every year. This will further separate the Big Ten and SEC, who has the fattest media deals, and complicate things for everyone else. IIRC the B1G contract comes out to about $80M per school. The Big12 and ACC are about half that amount. And non-P5 schools won't have much of a pie to share. While it keeps the NCAA intact, they are going to have to run pretty lean and make cutbacks like the athletic departments. At this point, I guess anything is on the table to make the numbers work: shortened seasons, smaller roster sizes, higher ticket prices, fewer trophies, more outside sponsors, discontinued sports, staff reductions, delays in facilities upgrades... hard to imagine wrestling coming out of all this in a better spot. College sports is broken.1 point

This will mean the end of competitive D1 wrestling, not that it's actually been all that competitive for the last 20 years or so since realistically only 3 or 4 teams even have a chance of making the podium anyway. Now schools will just buy the best wrestlers. Who has the most money in D1 that has a wrestling program? Ohio State does. Michigan is 2nd among schools with wrestling programs. Coaching will be at a premium, but the little schools will all suffer. I predict over time that the rankings of the best wrestling schools will line up fairly precisely with those schools revenue with minor variations due to the ability of the coaches.1 point

I am not 100% sure what to make of this so I thought I would just throw it out there for discussion. There has been a lot of talk (understatement alert) on this board about the decreasing number of bouts wrestlers wrestle these days. Some see water fowl wherever they look, while others see wisdom. After all this is a sport with a near guarantee of injury. I decided to take a look at bouts wrestled throughout the years for NCAA champions. Champions only, because we mostly worry about seeing the best wrestle more often. And it was a heavy lift finding historical totals. I also selectively chose years (roughly every 5 years, but not always) because there are nearly 900 champions at this point. Think of this as my own form of load management. The Data My Observations The early years were so vey different. Travel was expensive and slow, making it very inefficient. So it just did not happen. Many teams did not bother attending the NCAAs in the years it was not near by. So usage rates were very low. Prior to WW2 NCAA champions typically wrestled fewer than 10 bouts. With 3, or maybe 4, coming at the tournament, "regular" seasons were virtually non-existent. It is also possible that they existed in greater numbers, but there just is no record of them. Who is to say? In the post war era, there was a steady increase in the number of bouts through the late 1960's. But things really took off in the mid-70's. This also corresponds with the peak period for team counts. Hmmmm. The moment continued until bout totals peaked in the late 90's before beginning the steady decline we have all felt and bemoaned. 1980 was a weird and wonderful outlier of a year. Cal State Bakersfield wrestlers must not have attended a single class. The Roadrunners had two champs that year, Joe Gonzales and John Azevedo, who wrestled 55 and 53 bouts, respectively. All wins, by the way. With Howard Harris of Oregon State also putting it on the line 46 times (all wins), the west coast was THE hotbed of wrestling. 154 up, 154 down. Have we found a natural equilibrium (fewer teams means fewer opponents)? Or do we slide further from here (where for art thou holiday tournament?)? What is the right balance between usage and giving the people what they want?1 point

Yep... 24/7 open portal....NIL guaranteed.... No eligibility requirements for "student" athletes.... As I have said, they will wrestle two periods for one team, transfer to the opposing school between the 2nd and 3rd, and then defeat themselves in overtime.1 point

Dang, this would have definitely been a better conversation in person, without assumptions. My "Felicia " was definitely in regard to him no longer repping the RWB, not him not being a citizen. My apologies. Should've clarified. I have no problem with others supporting him financially; I was just clarifying why I would not. Looking back, I see how my messages could have been interpreted incorrectly. That one is on me brother. Appreciate you pointing that out.1 point
-
The entire tone of your responses was different up until this one. If this is truly how you feel, then I am with you. As I said in my responses, I would also root for RWB first. That said, deciding to withhold and, more importantly, advocating for people to not offer potential support to a person who is a dual citizen (in this case it means both Mexico and the United States) is shitty and petty - best case. He is still a citizen of the United States as well as Mexico. Your initial response to me was "Not anymore. Bye Felicia" so the name calling started with you.1 point
