11 men, 1 woman - that's 12. When Snyder won the spot at Trials, he did it before Helen, so I announced he was the 11th. Helen became the first woman, so I said she was the first woman, which is more significant than being the 12th American. Not sure if they're referencing my announcement or Cody Goodwin's story where he wrote about it for USAW. Anyway, here's the answer Bruce Baumgartner (4) Mark Fuller (4) Ben Peterson Bill Kerslake Dan Chandler Dennis Hall Dick Wilson Kenny Monday Tommy Evans Wayne Baughman Kyle Snyder Helen Maroulis9 points

i notice you say "shifting goalposts" as if it was an argument in itself. In case you haven't noticed, there are protests all over american campuses, peaceful and not so much, over the war in Gaza. They are a partnership between muslim fundamentalists and leftists who think the cause of terrorism is fighting against it. These are both fundamentalist perspectives, just like "give me complete control of the world's economy or else climate change". this is why you see "queers for palestine" signs, people on the left will thoughtlessly virtue signal by promoting anyone with a trendy victim narrative. by the way you are being dishonest again, willie was referring to the first guy and I was referring to the second, whom could easily be fundamentalists in different ways, but sense there is a partnership between these two sides on this issue your comment still made no sense.4 points

This wasn't the question in any manner. The question was, does any PSU wrestler beat Kyle Dake. Who cares if you think he is a likeable wrestler. If we did, we would start a post or a poll asking, "Is Kyle Dake a likeable wrestler, Yes or No" Follow along, please.2 points

Yes. This happened to me around 91? About 1.5 minutes left in the 5 minute period. I had a decent lead (3-0 on three one pointers?) on a very good guy on the "national team," whom was also a D1 placer. He got a tight hold on me and i "slipped." This is where things went very very bad for me. The match did not end up going the distance... and I did not win. The first 3.5 minutes were probably the best I ever wrestled in my life however.2 points

i said on a podcast that i hated the call. that i thought it was inadvertent and meaningless. and that i hate seeing matches decided on technicalities w/ short time. Brook's father watched it and text me that Aaron said Zahid had previously been warned in the match. which, to me, changes everything.2 points

Not International rules, but NCAA. It was a home dual for ILLINOIS versus Michigan. Mike Poeta is a Freshman wrestling up a weight at 165 against Ryan Churella. Match is tied as regulation time expires. Poeta hits a double in sudden victory for the apparent win. Crowd goes crazy. Ref calls an equipment grab, claiming that the ILLINI pulled on Churella's knee pad. We screamed our displeasure. I've never been louder expressing my dissatisfaction (except when I saw my toddler boy start to cross our street without looking both ways). Poeta loses by an infraction point in SV. So, in the first interview I ever had with then-Associate Head Coach Poeta, I ask him about it. He basically said, "It was a good call. I grabbed the knee pad. It was inadvertent as my fingers got stuck, but I grabbed it."1 point

In Judo you don't get penalize for a missed throw. Your opponent has to stop your momentum and then force you to the mat (to your back to score). After a missed throw, the action isn't stop and so the punishment is you have to defend on the mat, this should be adopted in GR. There is a time limit within you have to attempt an attack or you get penalize for passivity. So if you pretend to throw and immediately bail out you can get a penalty for a false attack. Mindsets about what actions deserve points can be very different across very similar sports. I was explaining slipped throws in GR to a non-wrestling Judo friend and he just could not understand how all wrestling does not have that rule. Getting points for your opponents making a bad move and you doing nothing did not make sense to him. What clearly should be worthy of scoring point to someone used to one system does not make sense at all if you are used to different rules.1 point

Make it PSU vs USA match in mid December. PSU starter vs then current highest ranked non PSU. Folkstyle. Matches count on the season record. Fire.1 point

Exactly. Also taking bad shots forces the offensive wrestler to chain wrestle out of the situation and find another scoring opportunity, which leads to more excitement. If slip throws was an effective rule, Judo would have adopted it in a second.1 point

Top tier guys more and more are not willing to "risk injury" As stated....pay them.... but who pays them to show up? They have had some good progress in some areas @nhs67 mentions The best storylines involve guys outside of the NCAA (Ferrari, PD3, Burroughs, etc.) which is hard to navigate given my first two points. At the end of the day, I want to be the ring announcer.1 point

Not only was that an epic singlet pull that didn't elicit a point but it came at a critical point in the match and could have cost JB the match. That pull allowed Tsargush to score the go ahead point that gave him criteria to win the 1st period (back in the best 2 out of 3 period times - good riddance to that). Obviously JBs corner protested but the gave the point to Tsargush anyway plus the lost challenge point. Since then I have seen them take away scores due to singlet pulls - this one was so egregious that it is hard to believe the point wasn't overturned. Fortunately JB won the next two periods and the match.1 point

I agree with this. In my very mediocre Greco career, I did get after it pretty good and actually legitimately slipped on many throws. However, there were times when a guy got a deep underhook (or two) and I "slipped" to save myself from a bad situation.1 point

Maylor was a senior. Amos also had shoulder issues 2 years ago at NCAAs and injury defaulted out of that tournament. Zargo and Amos are the only returning qualifiers. No elite recruits. No depth. It will be an ugly year for the Badgers and the used car salesman they have as a head coach.1 point

From working in media for the past 30+ years, I can tell you the three most popular sports in the Olympics are swimming, gymnastics and track and field - nothing else is even close, not USA basketball or whatever your personal preference. But, understand even these sports are under roster pressure. The US swimming roster is capped this year at 26 men and 26 women. In the pool, there are 14 individual events for men and women, three relays for men and women and one mixed relay. In addition, there is a 10K open water race for both men and women. While the US can enter up to two swimmers per race, only the trials winner in each race automatically qualifies in each race, and runners up are reliant on super swimmers like Michael Phelps to win multiple events at trials so that they can go to the games. (Of note, my son has swam against one of the favorites in the 200 back this summer in MD; he is one those racers who, if he doesn't win the trials, will need to help to get to the games as he doesn't have a realistic chance to make the games in another race.) So, while the IOC wants more swimming events, they don't want any more athletes at the games - even for the most popular sports. I do believe you will see the IOC/World Aquatics add the 50 Breast, Fly and Back as well as additional relays (200 Free, 800 Medley, more mixed gender races) for future games. But, I won't be surprised if they continue to further limit the number of swimmers even the US can bring.1 point

I don’t get how we can’t get a full 10 weights, they’re already doing the event, paying for venue, promotion(?), mats, referees, TV/streaming, etc. the cost of adding weights is much less than the cost of adding a new sport or whatever’s1 point
-
I seem to remember folks saying it's more likely that we see the Olympics add beach wrestling before adding any more weights1 point

Bono gets the full blame for the program declining because every All American level guy has transferred away from UW except Barnett and the biggest issue is that the state of Wisconsin has a ton of elite high school recruits that all decide to go elsewhere. Some people in the state blame Askren, but the reality is whatever issues Bono and Ben have is Bonos problem because he needs Ben's athletes but Ben doesn't need Bono.1 point
