  1. That sounded suspiciously like someone volunteering to add the superior decision era to my data set.

  7. As anyone who has paid attention to my posts knows, there are a couple of things I hate for their laziness. The generic claims of ducking and stalling. Here we will ignore the former and focus on the latter. I loooooove @pmilk's posts on strategy. After all one man's strategy is another man's stalling. And this can be very tribal. All you need to do to see that is read some of the posts on HR by their fan parody account Ironbird. A recent perfect example is yesterday he complained that Woods would have won by more if the opponent hadn't stalled. In the same post he referred to Arnold's "tuff ride/mat returns to wear a guy down and kill some clock". You know because one is clearly stalling, but the other is strategy. Blah, blah, blah. Digging through @grogs84 data for the 1988 to 2021 NCAA tournaments I thought I would find the wrestlers who won a title while scoring the fewest points. To do this I narrowed it down to wrestlers who won all of their matches by decision on their way to a title. Let's call them the Efficient Eight (really 10 with ties, but I do love alliteration). Why score any more than you need to? It's not like you can use those extra points in later matches. Conserve energy. Don't let 'em see your moves on tape. Good luck scouting all my moves when I only use one per match, if that many. Now that is just smart wrestling. The heavies are, um, heavily represented with 6 of the 10, but it is a middleweight who shall lead them all. While it saddened me to see that no one had won five straight 1-0 matches in OT, Jason Tsirtsis at 149 in 2014 came closest, having won his 5 matches 4-1, 4-3, 2-1 (OT), 2-1 (OT) and 3-1 (OT) for a 15 point total (only 12 in regulation time, awesome). Does anyone know of any wrestlers pre-1988 or post 2021 to score fewer than the world's most efficient wrestler**? *Ok, Ten, so The Taut Ten? ** Guinness verification pending.

  18. Yesterday it was all about efficiency. Scoring the minimum while moving on. Today it is about using every part of the wrestler. Exploring the space. Having some fun. As long as we are here we might as well stay...and score some points. Looking at the guys who were basking in the moment and enjoying the spotlight (all matches went the full seven minutes) shows 1994 was the year if you like scoring. Alan Fried scored 80 points (20-9, 19-8, 14-4, 12-4, 15-6) in five matches on his way to the 142 crown, while Lincoln McIlravy put up a not too shabby 78 points (28-16, 19-7, 10-4, 13-2, 8-3) in five victories at 150.

  19. 1980 Joe Gonzales scored 94 in 5 matches after winning by DSQ in pig-tail. 25-11, 20-7, 27-7, 16-7, 6-3. Pre TF days of course.

  20. I think with Mizzou only having 4 Freshman this year and basically them all wrestling at the Tiger Style and Maryville Open. (the ones that were not injured) They are also entered in the Cougar Clash. They had to choose one to skip for the 5 dates and I guess Lindenwood was the one. I know 2nd semester they have the UNO open plus Denker Open and Missouri Valley Open. I can see Mizzou sending their Freshman and Some backups to Midlands as well like last year. Cameron Steed looked really good beating Manibog and Harper. I was at the LU open and that Freshman/Sophomore Division was pretty darn good. It had DIV I redshirt freshman from Bellermine, Northern Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma State, SIU-Edwardsville, Northwestern, Illinois & of course LIndenwood not to mention Central Oklahoma and McKendree from DII I am happy Okie State brought their whole team as well SIU-E. The Lindenwood Open replaced the old St. Louis Open the same weekend. That had a bunch of DI teams like Mizzou, Okie State, Oklahoma, Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Northern Illinois Illinois, Purdue, Chattanooga. Plus now defunct programs like Notre Dame, Clemson, BYU, Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State), Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, and Iowa would send their backups. Plus tough DII teams at the time like SIU-Edwardsville, Central Missouri and Central Oklahoma. Plus, all the good JUCO's around Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Iowa. It was brutal.

  22. Each week things get more and more intense and this week surely didn’t disappoint. As we get ready for some huge events like the All-Star Classic and Cliff Keen Las Vegas, we take a look at some of the biggest takeaways from last week. Gable Arnold Looks Poised in Carver-Hawkeye Debut In case you didn’t know, true freshman Gable Arnold is pretty good. How good is yet to be determined - at least on the college level - but so far, he’s been a nice spark plug for the Hawkeyes this year. On Sunday he made his first appearance in Carver and collected a 4-2 win over #11-ranked All-American Travis Wittlake. With the Hawks having some vets in their lineup due to suspension, the youngster is a welcome addition. He competed in the Luther Open earlier this season and was one of the eight champs Iowa had. It’s been a good start for the freshman so far. Wisconsin Takes a Big Non-Conference L The matchup at 165 pounds between NCAA Champion David Carr and multiple-time All-American Dean Hamiti may have been low-scoring, but it was still quite the battle. However, it was overshadowed by the 42-0 loss that the Badgers were sent home with. The Cyclones took the 26-6 win last year when the teams met around this same point in the season which obviously gave Wisconsin a bad taste, but this year it has people wondering what’s to come with the new faces in the lineup for coach Bono. It’s still early, so there’s a lot of room to grow, but it sure was an uncharacteristic performance from Wisconsin. Michigan Has Solid Trip On The Road The Wolverines traveled to the East Coast this weekend to take on Columbia and Rider in New York and New Jersey, respectively. This was the first competition for most of the Wolverine starters, but we’ve yet to see their full lineup as expected. Largely though, this was a solid trip. They came away from the weekend with two dual meet victories, and we got to see some of their youth in the lineup. Noteworthy was Sergio Lemley, who was one of seven Michigan wrestlers to go undefeated on this trip (Will Lewan, Cam Amine, Shane Griffith, Jaden Bullock, Bobby Striggow, and Lucas Davison being the others). Lemley’s wins were over the 33rd and 32nd ranked wrestlers in Kai Owen of Columbia and Mackenzie Bell of Rider, so certainly impressive for the true freshman. Also impressive was the way that Amine wrestled. He didn’t compete much early last season due to some injury concerns, so it’s great having him apparently healthy and he certainly competed that way. Sadly, Chris Cannon suffered a head injury in his first match as a Wolverine, but we are hoping for a quick recovery and return to the lineup. Up next, Vegas! Michigan State Vets Make Season Debut It’s been a busy start for the Spartans. This past weekend they competed at their third straight tournament of the year. First Clarion, followed by hosting the MSU Open, then the Black Knight Invite. This was a different tough because this was the first competition of the year for their vets. Positives were Chase Saldate taking second at 157 pounds and Kael Wissler taking first at 197. Saldate comes into the year as one of the Spartans with high expectations, and I’m sure he didn’t walk into this tournament hoping to take second, but a loss to a tough opponent in Vincent Zerban of Northern Colorado is not a bad loss and something he can use to propel his training as they continue through the non-conference portion of their schedule. Wisler winning the 197-pound title is impressive and he will be someone to watch develop as the season continues. Sadly, another senior – Layne Malczewski – had to default out of his first match due to injury. He’s battled injuries throughout his career, but always seems to come back ready to go. I hope this is just a minor blip in what will otherwise be a strong finish to his career. The Spartans compete next on December 3rd in duals with Franklin & Marshall, Bloomsburg, and Presbyterian. Ohio State Claims Perfect 20-0 Weekend You know what’s impressive? Shutting out a team in D1 wrestling is impressive. You know what’s more impressive than that? Shutting out three teams in seven days. To this point in the season, the only team to have won a match in a dual against the Buckeyes is Virginia Tech. Okay, so shutouts are neat. But dominant shutouts are even more special. Against Edinboro, Columbia, and Hofstra, Ohio State scored, 53, 49, and 51 respectively. Two decisions, three majors, and the rest were tech falls or pins. Also, they didn’t have their full lineup because Jesse Mendez was out competing at the Bill Farrell Invitational. Ohio State jumps right back into some tougher competition as they fly out to Vegas as well. Nice tuneup out East for them, but the real fun begins shortly. Viva Las Vegas!!! Bonus Points Listen to the second installment of the B1G Ten vs ACC breakdown with conference correspondents Ryan Holmes, Kevin Claunch, and Robbie Wendell.

  23. Only if you can avoid getting rear-ended by one of the student drivers. I don't think it is too much to ask that at least ONE of the two knows how the scoring works; the other one can simply read off the data that the AD provides about the wrestler's previous record, where else they went to school, win streaks, etc., and let the kid who knows something do the play by play. Especially given that BIG+ requires a paid subscription. I don't claim to be perfect, but I am doing it for free. Also, Pitt-Maryland were two ranked teams and it is a Monday early in the season, so it isn't like there was likely to be some huge scheduling conflict with booking announcers.

  26. Really? Off the top of my head Davis "whiffed" on Cole Conrad, Tim Hartung, Garrett Lowney, Ben Askren, and Alex Dieringer. I believe that is a total of 9 NCAA individual titles, 12 NCAA Finals appearances, 3 Hodge Trophies, 2 Olympians, and 1 Olympic medal. I'm not a Bono apologist, but come on, there has been great Wisconsin prep talent leaving the state for 30 years now.

  32. Yeah, the kids announcing- and they both sounded like children- seemed to just be making crap up as they went. It kind of reminded me of reading AI created content where the general context is not entirely incorrect, but the actual phrasing is a mishmash of randomly selected words which are loosely related to the subject.

  38. The three point TD is a solution to a non existent problem. Call stalling whether on feet or the mat. The TD or reversal are both establishment of control and should always be weighted equal.

  39. They’re typically students I believe. For that reason I try to give them some slack. While these ones did have a few mishaps I thought they had good energy and communication skills, I’ve heard much worse. For example it wasn’t “like” or “you know” every other word. Much prefer IMO to the zero announcers that Flo provides sometimes

  43. From your last bit of "context": I see the dog whistles are a-blowin'. Yeah...Jewish people need to build good relations with the "right" ethnicities. You know...the "good ones." You can try to spin this all you want. It's like the argument about how a law can't be racist because it doesn't use racist words. Or saying "with all due respect" before saying something wildly disrespectful.
