  1. @nhs67...you need to dress your thread with hot topic issues to gain decent conversation. Throw in hot topics like Gambling, Portal, Nil, @Ban Basketball, liberals are whiny wimps, as a defense lawyer @VakAttack only represents those that he knows are guilty and works diligently to get them off all charges, for me personally got to throw in a Cinnabon party foul, something for PSU fans so @Interviewed_at_Weehawken can get into another argument about Cael & company, and something about D11 in PA to get @flyingcementto participate. Surprised @ionel hasn't posted yet. He's our Bubbles from the Wire and appears everywhere

  2. I haven't been following everything that closely this summer and don't have a great grasp on who the newcomers to keep an eye on are at each weight class. So, I will take a stab at this and let you guys correct me where I'm missing things. Counting redshirt freshmen as well as true frosh here: 125) Marc-Anthony McGowan - Princeton - True Freshman. It feels like his high school career didn't exactly end with a bang, but it wasn't exactly a tragedy either. Still a high tier recruit, and even though his coach left he'll have to be thinking, I've just gotta live my life. 133) Nic Bouzakis - Ohio State - RS Freshman. I think he can beat anyone in this weight class outside of the top 2. I also think he'll take some head scratching losses--in part because he's a freshman, and in part because that's just who he is. 141) Mac Church - Virginia Tech - True Freshman. How good is this kid? I don't know much about him. He's got a great name though. Sounds more like a quarterback than a wrestler, but still cool none the less. 149) Michael Gioffre - Virginia - RS Freshman. The Lannister boy. This kid is pretty tough. Solid in all three positions. Not a ton of offensive firepower but that could come later, he looks the part. Could see him moving up into the R12 range this year. 157) Meyer Shapiro - Cornell - True Freshman. One of, if not the best, recruits of the past five years. His potential is scary, and he's already scary good. Predicting a true freshmen to compete for a title is a little silly but I think I have to do just that. AA at minimum. 165) Nick Hamilton - Virginia - RS Freshman. Had a nice redshirt season. Don't know much about him. The other possibility at this weight is Mesenbrink forcing his way into the PSU lineup. I'd guess Facundo will go, but not sure anyone knows at this point. 174) MJ Gaitan - Iowa State - RS Freshman. I gotta be honest, I've never seen him wrestle. He was a highly ranked recruit, that's about all I know. 184) Bennett Berge - SDSU - RS Freshman. Can he translate his freestyle results into folkstyle success--remains to be seen. Took a few lumps in open comp last year. I think this kid is a stud. South Dakota has quite a salty lineup this year. 197) Luke Geog - Ohio State - RS Freshman. Not sure he'll be in the lineup to start the season, but I think he'll pass up Hoffman before the year is over. Breaking into the top 8 at 197 this year looks very difficult, though. Mac Stout is another freshman to watch at this weight--I went with Geog due to their respective matches vs. Davison. 285) Dayton Pitzer - Pitt - RS Freshman. I know people would expect Feldman here, but I'm going to go Pitzer. For one, Feldman hasn't wrestled a match in over a year. And second, Pitzer made the finals at Midland as an undersized true freshman and has wins over guys like Schultz and Hillger. Who'd I miss?

  3. With the World Championships wrapped up and the College season about 6 weeks away, it is time to start revving the NCAA engine a little. Let's start by looking at All-Americans. And let's get this out of the way up front. Yes, I include the top 8 seeds from the cancelled 2020 tournament. So sue me. AA Trivia There have been 190 schools with at least one All-American. A total of 5,590 All-American honors have been shared by 3,307 wrestlers (or perhaps fewer if I have some mis-spellings). In 1981 there were only 79 All-Americans as there was no 8th place awarded at 134. Oklahoma State, at 480 AA's, is a full 32.6% ahead of Iowa's 362. The longest active streak of consecutive years with at least one All-American belongs to Iowa at 52 years. The longest dry spell is Army at 15 years. They last had an AA in 2008 (Matt Kyler, 141). The Top 5 At each team's current pace (average of 2022 and 2023): Iowa will overtake Oklahoma State for the all time lead in 2057. Penn State will overtake Iowa in 2101. Cael Sanderson will be 121 years old and still wondering if Christian Pyle has a plan. AA's By Total Wrestlers with 5 AAs: 6 Wrestlers with 4 AAs: 171 Wrestlers with 3 AAs: 447 Wrestlers with 2 AAs: 852 Wrestlers with 1 AAs: 1,830 Probability of AA by Year We are used to 33 man brackets with 8 AA's per bracket (~24%), but it wasn't always that way. Using the rules that existed at the time and @Jason Bryant's participation stats by year, the most difficult year to AA was 1970 when only 15% of wrestlers earned AA status. Where the AA's Come From Not every AA was a top 8 seed to begin with. Below is the percentage of AA's by seed (left column) and broken into the seeding eras. What Is A Top 8 Seed Worth? Seven of the past nine years have been hard on Top 8 seeds. From 2014 to present, only 2017 and 2019 saw them perform above trend.

  5. It must have been his losses to Barnett, Deaugustino, McKee, Lamont and Heinselman that make you so certain he will be a lock. Or perhaps his current ranking or #19?

  6. Rumor has it that new stud incomming frosh for Michigan, Mogan Lassa will compete for the 197lb spot for Michigan. Looks eerily familiar to Logan Massa, just with a bit of a gut.

  7. Is this really a possibility? Lemley wrestled 132 in HS last season, correct? Edit: same question as Wildcat had a couple minutes sooner.

  8. 184 - Rylan Rogers, Michigan He may take some bumps because he is in the B1G and there are no easy outs there, but he will be right up there with Berge in contention for best (RS) Frosh. 141 - Sergio Lemley, Michigan If the plan is to redshirt Ragusin (which is not set in stone either way that he is or isn't), then we could see him make an impact Year 1. People are expecting a lot out of Kanon Webster, but a lot of folks conveniently forget that Lemley has the series edge on him. 149 - Dylan Gilcher/Sergio Lemley/Beau Mantanona, Michigan, If Mayora struggles... which I don't expect to happen until B1G season gets underway, we may see Gilcher enter the lineup and cement himself for the Maize and Blue at 149. It is also quite possible that Lemley ends up at 149 for them, if Ragusin doesn't redshirt. I suppose the same could be said for Mantanona for them, if he cements himself as the best option at 149 for UofM. 197 - Hayden Walters, Michigan If Bullock cannot stay healthy and Walters cements himself as the best option for Michigan at 197 over the likes of Yatooma and Striggow, which I believe might be the most realistic avenue, we might see Walters step in and take over the spot.

  11. Nope. Everybody (as in every body not immersed permanently in water) was exposed to the corona virus. It was in the air like oxygen. Some got very sick and died, some very sick and went to the hospital, some got a little sick, some got sniffles, and the rest were asymptomatic. Just like flu every year. But the covid virus ATE the influenza virus. That is the only possible way an aerosol transmitted virus JUST LIKE COVID-19 disappears! It is impossible that something transmitted exactly like corona virus that logic tells us would have been side by side with corona virus simply disappears! Unless COVID ATE THE FLU!! 8 year average estimated flu deaths in USA from flu seasons 2012/13 - 2019/20 = 48,000. Standard Deviation = 11,500 Flu Deaths in 2020/21 estimated about 1,000. This is a z-score of -4.06. A once per 50,000 year event!!! Flu Deaths in 2021/22 estimated about 11,000 (it is becoming OK for people to die of flu, Brandon is president). Still a z-score of -3.2. A once per 1,400 year event. Hospitals were still being paid for Covid deaths. Flu Deaths in most recent season, 2022/23 = 38,000. Which is low but less than 1 std dev below normal. We expect a number this low about 1 of every 5 years. Much much less covid hanging about in the air eating up all those flu viruses so things return to normal. So, the only logical conclusion is that COVID ate the Flu. It's just science.

  12. If Cael & Co had been at BYU no way would Cael have 4 NCAA titles. Even if his Father coached him he would not have done it - and Steve is an excellent coach. Cael had the talent and the moves but Bobby Douglas was a big part of his success.

  16. Good question. I didn't originally read your reply as being about wrestling, but using a wrestling related story to introduce a non-wrestling related concept that may, or may not even apply, because it is something that bothers you. But as I re-read it I think that is too harsh an interpretation. My apologies.

  19. Psst. Don't tell Ban. He does not accept authorities (he might call them authoritarians) such as the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the official Olympics website as sufficiently informed to be cited on the topic. Nevermind the contemporaneous accounts of eyewitnesses. Those people had lying eyes. Lincoln was not declared by Altemeyer to be a wrestler and if Altemeyer did not say it then it is not true.

  25. Its called, taking your ball and going home. This will completely upend the federal government and quite possibly destroy the economy if it actually happens. Which it won't. They don't like regulation so they try to scuttle the organization(s) put in charge of doing it and for reasons no more altruistic than profit. As we have learned over and over, banks can't be trusted to regulate themselves, oil companies can't be trusted to regulate themselves, just about every industry has an instance(usually not small, insignificant, or isolated) that says in large, friendly letters WITH. NO. OVERSIGHT. COMES. NO. RESPONSIBILITY! I love non-wrestling related topics but ya, you should probably bring this up somewhere else.

  34. The book banning in schools seems necessary for age appropriateness. Why is a rating system applied to movies and games... but not books? Certainly, a book like the Archarchist Cookbook should have a rating system and not openly be accessible for study by teenage boys. I've read many banned books, not limited to... The Kite Runner, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Animal Farm, The Outsiders, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Catcher in the Rye, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Bridge to Terabithia, Harry Potter... Some of the ban reasons are silly, but situational bans (for the children) are logical to me... it is 100% appropriate where applied to movies... why not books? Is this (book banning) the legislated censorship you refer to? For fairness of point making, let's recall that books are banned in schools by libs and conservatives.

  40. We have a niche olympic sport. The little guys (wrestling, hockey, tennis, etc) and the no-future athletes like a certain QB going nowhere on the depth chart or professional level are going to get beat up and used as the compliance example of a cautionary tale for the revenue-driving sports. It is what is it is.
