Once this news makes its way onto the Lehigh Wrestling facebook page, might need some wellness checks at the many senior housing facilities populated by the LU fan base. 0-3 against Ivy teams and could be at risk for 0-4 with an upcoming match v. Princeton. Yikes! But they have a good tournament squad and should have Beard and a few others ready for success at EIWA's and NCAA's. Hold on old timers, all is not lost!4 points

Not sure if the distinction matters, but "psu hatred" is almost always just "hatred" of obnoxious psu fans. The haters often want to root for some psu guys, but psu fans make that impossible.3 points

two-time state finalist Louie Gill (NC State commit) moved to a new school over the summer. they had hearings on it. i'm still not sure it's resolved. Mineo is saying a parent of a kid ranked in the state at that weight is fighting for the kid to be ineligible, which i highly doubt.2 points

Yeah, that's the thing. I don't think he actually did. He said he went from 187 one year to 210 the next year. Well, he came out of High School weighing 215. So he'd have been able to fit into 220 easily. I don't actually think HE quit because he "had" to cut. I just don't buy it...particularly since he quit before HS. He said his passion was Football, and he was ALREADY getting attention by the time he was a Freshmen in HS for FB. BUT I don't think it's all that important why he said it or if HE actually did quit for that reason, I think the fact that you do have guys who quit because of their Football aspirations is the problem. So if he was maybe a little full of it, it's immaterial, it's a reality of the sport. It's not an issue with weight classes, I think it's a problem at schools where the FB coach discourages Wrestling on the basis that they'll have to cut and that'll interrupt their lifting and building, and then Wrestling coaches who push weight cutting at the HS level and drive Football players. They changed the weight classes to more than accommodate for Football players.2 points

You’re right. I heard that and I won’t tell you what my reaction was. It was well described in a link in an earlier post. Iowa wrestling like PSU might step on a banana peel and PSU wrestling like that was okay with them. It was not the kind of match that would promote more interest in the sport. It was barely interesting to us replete connoisseurs, much less to the maddening crowds. Maybe it’s because it didn’t mean anything. Conference duals don’t mean anything anymore than non conference duals. The only thing that matters is the conference tournament, to a degree, and nationals.1 point

That’s a timely good point because I was just going to suggest that because so many of today’s wrestlers can’t get in good enough condition to wrestle seven minutes, shorten the first period by one minute and have a 30 second break between each period. Let the wrestlers catch a breath and let the coaches coach.1 point

Iowa fans think PSU was stalling, PSU fans think Iowa was stalling. Some people think both were stalling. In the immortal words of Vincent Lauria, "If everybody's doin' it, that's a whole lotta people doin' it". Gotta do something about it.1 point

I expect Zahid to handle Amine, but I think your question was answered when Amine came home with an Olympic Bronze medal.1 point

It's telling how PSU and Iowa fans can watch the same match and have opposite takes on who was stalling and boring and who would benefit from more aggressive stall calls, who shows promise, etc. Although I'm more with this guy ( Iowa stalls link), I can appreciate the good points raised by Iowa fans as well as be amused by the more myopic rants. Thanks for the good reads.1 point

Troy Fisher got thrown by a beautiful hip toss! Almost pinned. He was down 6-0 with over a minute of riding time against him. Troy is technically very solid and came back to win 11-10 in the bought of the night. Just a very deep team as Evan Bates lost in last few seconds to 15th ranked kid from Rutgers! Good wrestling by both teams.1 point

The IOC statement is maddening on so many levels. Just a few: 1: What has changed since the IOC's statement in 2/22, prohibiting Russian (and Belorussian) athletes from participating at all? https://olympics.com/ioc/news/ioc-eb-recommends-no-participation-of-russian-and-belarusian-athletes-and-officials Answer. Nothing. Nothing at all. Only that Russia has stepped up its aggression and kept even more Ukranians from participating. And, apparently, that Russia's influence over the IOC won out over concerns over Russia's murderous territory grab. 2. We already know from anti-doping scandals that this remedy is not only ineffective, it is pointless. Referring to athletes as "Russian Olympic Committee" is a distinctoin without a difference, and even the media refers to the supposedly "independent athletes" as Russian. The athletes privately carry Russian flags and thank Mother Russia in their speeches. Seriously, why even bother pretending its a sanction, when it so clearly is not? 3. I firmly believe that the only way Russia backs down from its territory grab is if faces significant internal pressure. That is very hard to create, especially where Russia lacks democracy and has forbidden public criticism of the attack. One of the VERY few ways such pressure could arise is if the athlete ban were lifted, instead of remaining in place until Russia retreats: then, eventually, the sports-loving public would revolt. As it is, Russian athletes and fans have been willing to "wait it out," based on assurance from Putin and Russian government that the IOC will cave. Putin was right, and now the single best point of leverage is lost. 4. The trigger for prohibiting a Russian athlete is so vanishingly small as to be nonexistent. My guess is 0% are barred from participation. You need to be "actively supporting the war in Ukraine," and Russian athletes already know to keep their mouth shut -- and Putin knows not to put athletes in a position where they might be disqualified, because he needs to keep the masses behind him. In fact, the way the IOC resolution is written, you could literally be on the front lines of the Russian war and have killed countless Ukranians and still be allowed to compete, since most of the current Russan soldiers were drafted -- and since a draft is involuntary it argubly is not "actively supporting." 5. Worse, you can be assured that this is being sold in Russia as not merely letting Russian athletes participate, but rather as an outright vindication. "The IOC has reviewed the situation and concluded we should be able to participate EXACTLY like we were able to participate in the last Olympics, before there was ever any invasion!", they will be told -- accurately. In an unfree media, this will be sold to the Russian populace of an international blessing of what they are doing. 6. Now that this hurdle has passed, Putin is also free to step up his assault on Ukriane. He no doubt realized the public backlash he'd face if there were a full-scale ban by Olympic committees, so he must have know that he had to keep it at a level where he doesn't invite an indefinite ban until Russia withdraws. Now that the risk has passed, he is free to step up the aggression again, even to the point of crushing Kiev entirely if he can. Its not like the IOC will change its mind. Needless to say, it is just a matter of days before UWW alters its position to mirror that of the IOC. I don't even blame UWW, as wrestling is hanging on by a thread as it is, and they certainly aren't going to want to go crosswise with the IOC and get themselves booted from the Olympics again. But even so, this feckless, gutless IOC capitulation is going to cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives, and prolong this war by untold years.1 point

I don't know if you watched tOSU v Mich just before. The ref, Matt Sorochinsky, best in the NCAA, called stalling in both the 125 and 133 matches. That sets the tone. All you needed was a ref with the cajones to call stalling, esp on PSU and Cael, in BJC. Bricks, f&%$ing video reviews, etc take match control away from the refs. IMO, that's 75% of the problem.1 point

Yes let's go back to the Iowa days of simply clubbing and pushing out of bounds. Can you image a techfall with 15 pushouts, won't that be fun.1 point

you were in Geary, tell me how many people there would even go to NCAA's. 17K people were at NCAA's in Detroit last year, BOK holds over 19K, so it is good there. Food and beer all within walking distance. The only snag will be parking, I am telling you, Tulsa will be fun. Side Note: I am not talking cost, I am hearing flights and hotels are out of line....I cannot comment on that.1 point

My understanding is that the kid came back to his home school. Like many states, when you combine the inconsistent application of eligibility requirements with parents and loopholes, the result is usually chaos.1 point

With Kerk I was talking about neutral in the 3rd. Kerk backed up and blocked while Cass repeatedly took (bad) shots. I have resigned myself to the idea they're not going to call stalling on top, no matter how little the guys do while there. That's not even directed at PSU, it's a collegiate-wide epidemic.1 point

125 Malik looked like Malik. When he has a lead in the third I'm always pretty confident. 133 Mendez Got the job done against a pretty seasoned college wrestler. 141 D'Emilio Had two great doubles. Minus the reversal he looked good. Mattin fans since they were little. Rarely does a Mattin not bleed in a match. 149 Sasso wasn't challenged and wrestled well. Fifteen bonus point wins this season. 157 Paddy wrestled decent against a decent wrestler. 165 Kharchla looked better than last time I saw him. Had two nice shots that he needs to finish and one I thought he did. He didn't seem to gas. Unlucky at the end. 174 Smith Looked okay and beat a guy he should. I hate giving up an escape with four seconds. 184 Romero was never in danger. Controlled the match. 197 Hoffman got a win. 285 Swenski was a surprise and probably didn't do much worse than Orndorff. Good win for the Buckeyes.1 point

Meant to add: the dual, unfortunately, was essentially over at the moment RBY stuck Teske. Iowa needed to thread a bit of a needle to win this, and that result made the eye of said needle incredibly small.1 point

Man. No stall calls on Kerk given how they called other matches is brutal. Dean managed to do less than Warner (which is hard to do) and win (to be clear, I don't think there should have been stalling calls on Dean, unless the ref was going to call double stalling, because that was awful). Starocci has more in him than he shows, which makes it frustrating to watch him. He's so much better than Nelson Brands. Teske nearly stalled his way to a decision, but karma caught up to him. Bartlett, Van Ness, and Facundo had jo discernible offense, same with Siebrecht (fun match, but Cobe only barely avoided a couple of more Haines TDs) and Brands (nice try to pretend like you're active without taking committed shots. All the wrestlers on both teams were disappointing to me in the second half of the dual except for Brooks.1 point
