I want to start off by apologizing to @bnwtwg for this post.

Is anyone still giving Byrd a chance at the title this year after what we've seen from these freshmen? Byrd is a deserving champion, and will always have that title, but this class of freshmen is unlike anything we've ever seen. If it were just Jax, or just Blaze, it would be one thing.. but even if Byrd is the #1 seed at NCAAs he's likely going to have to face someone like Frost, Larkin, or Ayala in the quarters, then the likes of Davino, Seidel, or Forrest in the semis, and then someone ridiculous in the finals.

Byrd beat Ayala by the smallest of margins in the finals last year and split with him earlier in the season. Obviously it's extremely hard to gauge Byrd right now since he hasn't wrestled anyone this year.. but the field last year at 133 was pretty down, and this is one of the most impressive weights we've had in some time, despite their age.

Byrd is a salty dawg and I'd be shocked to see him off the podium, but I also have a hard time picturing him placing in the top 4.

Lots of people had a hard time picturing him doing lots of things last year, but here are some of my favorite pictures from last season.

👋

Byrd rassels with a 6'3" opponent all the the time, you think he's not ready for Jax & Seidel?

About half a dozen responses crossed my mind, but I am showing great restraint here. This seems more like @bnwtwg's lane anyway.

I think Byrd is a season vet who will wrestle close matches but also won't make may mistakes and will punish any mistakes made against him. I also think 133 last year was incredibly weak as can be seen by how Ayala (2nd), Romney (3rd), and Fuggitt (4th) have performed this year

It’s really about seeding at 133 and your path . He can beat some of these super freshman like Blaze who will wrestle low scoring matches, I have a hard time seeing him wrestle with Jax for 7 minutes but I think other people can beat Jax so he could have a path where he doesn’t face him and wins a title. Good chance he’ll see Blaze/Davino or both at big 10s and we ll see

This made me laugh, good post. With that being said the defending champ has a chance to win but I'll predict unlikely.  Too much horsepower and offense from the young guns with an aggressive mindset.  Byrd hasn't wrestled a great schedule either, not his fault but it matters.  I just see them "outscoring" him and I don't see him stopping these guys.

Definitely a chance, best defense and positioning in all of ncaa, but his lack of scoring probably hinders him from winning it… but he did last year so 🤷‍♂️ Byrd’s the word

Byrd has no business being ranked #1 and represents everything that's wrong with rankings.   Not his fault he's wrestled none of the top competitors this season but his body of work this doesn't stack up with Forrest, Davino or Blaze.  Yes he won NCAA's last year--congrats.  This year he's just another tough guy and he's unproven against the elite of 133 which have been feasting on last year's AA's.

Then why does every reputable ranking site have him #1?

Everyone blames Byrd's schedule but when the all-star meet was up everyone looked like a bunch of oranges when it came time to step up to the champ in the orange and blue.

After watching him deck Ayala in the big ten finals last year, and then win the whole tournament without batting an eyelash, I’m never picking against byrd.  I think he’s built himself some jaggers blood.

Did we watch the same tournament last year? He grinded out a 2-0 win over Romney and then won on 6 seconds of RT over Ayala who just got tech'd.. I'd say he did a bit more than bat an eyelash.
