Any other gamblers here? I will give you 10-1 odds that Tom Ryan doesn’t make it 40 more years

I've got 10-1 odds this thread doesn't make it 4 more hours before getting censored.

Dare I say.   Rogue one is on par with 4/5/6. I have an artist buddy that made me scarf painting which is cool

Agreed Rogue One does have the 4/5/6 feel. Andor too. So much of the other content is like... predictable stuff with Star Wars references.

You almost act as if this is a new ideology for Tom Ryan the head coach for the 2nd ranked team in the country, which it isn't, so why has he still been so successful??  He clearly isn't hurting team morale nor solidarity.  And who made you the overseer of what is too far right or too far left??  Just because YOU disagree with some of his believes you are going to label him as and claim it hurts the team, recruiting, and the administration...but yet his views clearly haven't.  Could maybe YOUR view be the incorrect one here??

By the way I am NOT an Ohio State fan nor a Tom Ryan fan as a coach.

I knew he was right of center, which is fine -- I am too, in many ways -- but I didn't realize what a whack-job conspiracy theorist he is. If you don't think that's there's a difference, I can't help you.

You may be right that he's held these more extreme views for a while.  I do recall reading that he's an anti-vaxxer, which is a bit fringe, although I never had the sense he was pushing those views on others.

But he sounds like the crazy uncle that everyone dreads seeing on Thanksgiving.  His first post peddles the view that Bitcoin is headed to $10 million/coin.  Um, ok.  His next post says that Minnesota passed a law to allow illegal aliens to vote.  Um, ok. Just type "Grok is this true?" and it'll explain why it's false, but Ryan can't be bothered and parrots it anyway.  There's a bunch more like that.

Again, if you like crypto, fine.  If you think we should be more vigilant about preventing voter fraud, fine. Reasonable people can differ.  But at least keep one tire on the road, and if you're a D1 coach, don't peddle demonstrably false or objectively insane viewpoints.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea in general for D1 coaches to be pushing ANY divisive political views publicly.  It tells wrestlers and recruits that they're less welcome if they don't share those views, and tells them they're going to get an earful of it in the wrestling room, like it or not. Not good, especially when you're the running the program at the flagship state-funded institution in a top wrestling state.

But again, if you're going to do it at all, at least keep it within reasonable bounds. When you push conspiracy theories and blatant falsehoods, it suggests your judgment is impaired and you can't be trusted to make sound decisions on behalf of your athletes.

how about the fact that nothing any of the characters did made any sense? Did that have a negative impact?

From both a recruiting perspective and alumni donation perspective, it's unwise for an active coach in any sport to get political.

Tom Ryan's not dumb - he knows this. I suspect he may be eying retirement and pivoting towards a career in politics to be the next Jim Jordan.

In today's political atmosphere (insanity on steroids) being liberal in the majority of colleges is very acceptable and desired. On the other hand, if you are conservative and have some religious beliefs its usually considered to be unwise to express your leanings or beliefs.

Sometimes you have to speak out even if it infuriates the people who hate you.

Honestly it depends what type of university and where but in my experience student orgs and often professors are more liberal / progressive for the most part but higher ups like Deans / Provosts / etc can be pretty conservative / religious. University presidents seem like a coin flip but generally more moderate

Not true in college wrestling rooms. They're overwhelmingly conservative/christian. This is why it's wise for coaches to stay out of politics altogether. Whatever you say, you're going to piss off someone whose support you need.

Paul, when was the last time you had any experience with hanging out on a college campus...

It has been a few years. Why do you ask? I spent some time on the Penn State campus in the 90's. Spent some time on the Citadel Campus in 2006 through 2008. Ouachita Baptist U.  2009 to2011. Appalachian State U. 2011 to 2014.

I'm curious if at those schools mentioned above it was "considered to be unwise to express your leanings or beliefs."

I hadn't thought of that.  Maybe you're right.

I realize he's always been socially conservative, but his Twitter page isn't about conservative morals and values so much as it is about pushing a particular political ideology... and even then, it's not "vote GOP" so much as he's latching on to the crazy stuff you see on social media that you won't find in a newspaper since it's basically made up and doesn't pass journalistic muster.

Politics aside, it's just tough to see a respected D1 coach get into the gutter like that.

They did have the best character arcs.....except for a few pieces of furniture.
