Messenbrink seems to be anointed as a 3 time national champion and I am not going to argue against that. However I think two new additions to 165 next year could make things interesting. Joey blaze has looked awesome this summer and I think is a better folkstyle wrestler at this point, I think being able to eat more is going to help his development a lot on top of him being reportedly only 19 or at least as of trials. The other guy that I think adds a wrinkle to the mix is Ladarion lockett. He is probably still a year or two away from entering that conversation but he is in the only room that has talent and coaching around his size to rival PSU and I think has a similar style that has proved to give Mitchell some issue.

Who & why?  🥴

That said, it was interesting that an 141lber went in to 157lbs and dominated all season and a fringe AA 165lber dropped and won it all... then the 157lbers beat up the 165lbers at the WTT at 74 KG.

There is no doubt that Mesenbrink is an outstanding wrestler, but I do think people underestimate how incredibly weak 165 was last year. The only truly consistent guys were Mesenbrink, Caliendo, and Hall. Just compare last years NCAAs versus the two years prior..

Seed 2023 2024 2025
1 Carr O'Toole Mesenbrink
2 O'Toole Mesenbrink Hall
3 Hamiti Ramirez Caliendo
4 Ramirez Carr Barraclough
5 Q. Monday Hamiti Ramirez
6 Kennedy Caliendo Mantanona
7 Caliendo Olejnik Garvin
8 Olguin A. Taylor Amine
9 Griffith Hall Steed
10 Kharchla Amine Sparks
11 Amine Cerniglia Scoles
12 Olejnik Thompson Minto

Edit: Forgot to say that I am excited to potentially see Joey Blaze and Lockett at 165 if they both go this season.

74 is weird because there is a "lack" of domestic level depth X everyone ran from the Carr/Metzenbrenk buzz saw X the big dogs (Dake + JB + lower tier Nolf) all exited during the same year.

Mind you, 74 is still our deepest weight with Carr, Missilebrick, and KOT when he gets back to full strength in 2027. Kinda funny to be deep and shallow at the same time but both are true.

I believe the reason for this was announced post-match at NCAAs 😉😉

I thought Minto for Nebraska was consistently good all season.

Caliendo will take a match from Messinbrink this year.  He closed the gap.  Carr showed the blueprint on how to beat Messinbrink.  Caliendo is athletic enough to copy it

That's all fine but it doesn't have any relevance for the 25/26 D1 season.

86 is way deeper. Zahid, Dake, Keck, Chance, etc.

I mean he lost to #24, #13, and #19 during the season. He was a #12 seed at NCAAs that finished 4th. It was a great year for a freshman that no one had on their radar. I'm really curious to see how he progresses moving forward.

I'll owe you one if I'm wrong, but Caliendo is never going to beat Mesenbrink. Also, @ionel are you familiar with Messinbrink?

Also, David Carr could easily have been a 4x champion. He was a #1 seed that suffered a massive upset in the R16, and he lost in the finals to KOT after he had beat him twice that season. David Carr and Mikey Caliendo is a ridiculous comparison. Caliendo is an absolute stud, but comparing him to Carr isn't fair.

Who ran from Carr and Mesenbrink? I agree the big dogs all exited the weight, but I'm not sure who is running?

I don’t recall the match…what’s the blueprint?

Can you describe the blueprint?

What is there to disagree on? One weight has a two world/olympic medalists, another world team member and then up and comers like Keckeisen, Starocci, Welsh, McEnally, Sinclair, etc. The other has three or four really solid young guys in Carr, Mesenbrink, O’Toole (assuming he’s back to form post injury) and Lockett. Seems like 86 is deeper with higher end talent right now.

Takahashi/Carr/Burroughs all wrestle extremely similar and own the only wins over Mitchell since he got to PSU.
