That's actually what my first reaction was, except salary cap, not roster cap.

By "salary cap," I mean that in a program that's dependent on just 1 or 2 major donors for NIL money, they only have so much money they can spend each year.  That's the salary cap.  If those funds get tied up in someone who isn't starting, it's that much less they can devote to some other recruit.  To free that money up, the donor needs a valid reason to break the NIL contract -- and dismissal of the team is one such reason.

Can't say that's what happened here, but since Arnold was already destined to ride the pine while still collecting Nicolls' NIL money, it would make some sense for Brands to seize on the first defensible reason they had to cut him loose, thus freeing up Nicolls' NIL money for some other recruit. Nicolls making his displeasure known on the Hawk boards may have accelerated that process.

It's too bad, if true, and maybe a bit of a premature move by the Hawks. I was really looking forward to seeing Gabe fight for a spot in the lineup this coming season.

Gabe was a freshman last year up a weight.  I think he has potential to be an all American threat at his ideal weight.  With 3 years of eligibility left that's a tough loss.

crazy. you'd think the real journalists in iowa would have gotten to the bottom of this already.

maybe they're still working on the story of who really shot Sam Stoll.

These are the kinds of posts I want from the notable guys that cover our sport.

This article doesn't even attempt to speculate as to why Gabe was dismissed.  One thing is for sure - dismissed implies it was not his choice to leave.

There are not enough words to describe what a moron you are.

Being "dismissed" from the team does not IMPLY it was not his choice, it implicitly states that.

Has that been the problem the whole time Jimmy? You don't know what words mean?

I think two things can be true here. Very serious allegations that should not be dismissed, however everyone has the right to due process and without that coming out I do not think anyone can report on anything more than what has been said which until it is proven fact is all conjecture. I have not seen anyone actually discredit the victims directly more so say that they do not care to speak on it until further information comes out which to me is fine.

Fair point, IAWrestle’s official x account didn’t even make a post about it…

What does it mean to be dismissed as it pertains to the already closed transfer portal?  That he can transfer this year but wouldn't be eligible to wrestle until next year?  Any thoughts?

I don't think I saw an answer to this anywhere, but I am guessing that he'd have to sit. The window has closed and even still, he'd need to be in good academic and team standing (not subject to disciplinary suspension or dismissal) to be immediately eligible. Gabe could still try to get a hardship waiver and say his dismissal was based on some sort of personal circumstance out of his control or, idk, say he really wanted to switch to a major that wasn't offered at Iowa or something.

I think he can still compete next year if he gets a waiver signed by Iowa now that we are outside of the transfer window.   That's how Burwick eventually was able to compete the season after Bono and UW "came under fire" from the message boards 😜🤣.

Iowa may not want to release him and they likely won't get any public pressure unless those wrestling journalist release more information that sway opinions toward Arnold...

there's this new thing. and i gotta get better versed on it,

but it's called a DSA or Designated Student Athlete.

it's a product of the 30-man roster limit and has ramifications for the rest of one's career (and, i think, the school that picks him up)

i'll get some more clarity on it.

Yeah, I think that just grandfathers in anyone on the current roster who are over the 30-athlete cap. Gabe would get a transfer exemption if Iowa says he was dismissed specifically because of the roster limit and named as a DSA, during which he'd have a small window to switch schools. I believe the DSA exemption would stick with Gabe at his new program, so Iowa would be doing his next school a pretty big favor by giving him Designated status on a 35ish man roster when it makes strategic sense to name other guys on the team.

So how were Buchanan and Teemer able to just show up at Iowa (and I think guys at other schools did similarly)?  Were they all grad students?

Not every transfer is a grad student, but Parco, Teemer and Buchanan were.

On the new Iowa board, Bob Nichols just indicated that Iowa was likely to gain some more transfers before the season started.  I guess that means it would have to be a graduate?

Grad, another team's DSA, or someone who gets a waiver from the NCAA I guess
