Can someone summarize what is happening?

Bo Bassett decomitted from Iowa.  Now there's a lot of tangential discussion off that, some on Bo's showy recruitment process, some on guessing at reasons for the decommitment, etc.

Appreciate the reasonableness.  I’m not trying to argue 🙂  I don’t like the current state of social media, NIL, comp, etc.  BUT I’m also a coach at heart and want every kid to find the right place for them.

i do too, but in this case i feel the person, who we hope finds the right place, was acting in accordance with what would get the most attention and not with what would get them to the right place.

Totally get it.  It’s a bummer that we even have to ask those questions at this point.

I saw Melvin's newest list of schools without Iowa on it and "Family first" caption or whatever before I knew Bo had decommitted. My level of confusion was sky high.

It'd be something if he ended up at UPJ. I mean honestly why shouldn't he go there? Here's my case for it.

He would be a hometown legend. The guy who could have gone anywhere stayed home and made UPJ relevant.

He could name his own schedule and even if he did more freestyle he would still win D2 pretty easily.

He could still wrestle the big name D1 guys at tournaments.

I think there’s a couple questions related to what you’ve mentioned here:

1. Why did he change his mind?

2. What’s the financial implications?

From my perspective, question 1 is irrelevant.  He needs to decide what’s right for him and the answer is really just for my understanding.  I’d love to know, but won’t question his decision based on any outcome.

Question 2 is fully speculative.  That $5mm number seems outlandish to me, but does it really matter?  There’s a lot fluctuating now with compensation.  Regardless of the numbers, I don’t blame the student athlete for shooting for the optimal payday.  There’s no real professional outlet after college.  They should get as much as possible.  It’s a fair question to ask WHO can play on the same field, but once again - for our understanding of the marketplace, and not any indictment on Bo’s commitment.

Nothing matters. Got it.

The only thing that matters is that this is a tremendous blow to the Hawkeye program as it tries to to keep pace with PSU and OK ST. Top recruit to build around and it created excitement for their fanbase. How this shakes out for the program will be interesting to watch. It's a huge loss.
