Watching him this year was nice. He did not have the size to match some opponents but his technique and hustle won a lot of matches.

Will he drop? Should he drop?

Or, will he spend time bulking up a bit while trying to keep his speed and endurance? He is still a growing boy so maybe he matures into the weight?

Either way he looks like a definite threat to win it all.

With both guys he lost to graduating, and multiple hammers at 184, I don’t see why he would.  I’d pick him over AJ for sure

When’s the last time a Penn state wrestler went up a weight and then back down? They have a strong track record of their guys bumping up, doing very well, and staying up.

I forgot he wrestled a season at 149. However, he went 15-10 and 1-2 at NCAA’s that year. Barr was a national finalist and his only losses came to guys that won’t be around next year.

I would say Barr's walk around weight come mid-summer would be around 205 plus. Maybe more. Does anyone know what his weigh in numbers this year were?

Two seasons at 149. Granted they were two poor seasons for him, but the reason he went 149 was there was no room at the inn at 141. If Barr went 197 because Starocci was 184, it would not surprise me if Barr went back to 184 in spite of his success at 197. But it also wouldn't surprise me if he decided to live more comfortably and stay at 197.

Barr is not the least bit undersized. That's nonsense. He'll stay at 197 and I look forward to him pummeling AJ

I'm seeing the same thing. He is a nice size 197 pounder. Just a few more pounds of muscle and will be a full size 197 pounder. I don't think he will ever see 184 pounds again.

Right, this is the main reason I wouldn't go down if I were him. '97 pounders are more physical and generally slower. Athletic '97s are hard to beat and '84 is stacked. I think Sinclair should go '74 for that reason. I view him as an immediate contender...I really don't see McNelly losing but but there are 4-5 other guys who are capable.

I think that kid from Stanford could be a stud at '84 also. Norman? Whatever their '74's name was.

But isn't Welsh transfering to Penn State? Or was that premature(while also being...ridiculous)?

Edit-I'd also add Facundo. But...guys are going to cut when they can't make the lineup. I look forward to him getting a good...hopefully 3 year run wherever he goes.

He weighed 196 for Day 2 Weigh-ins at B1Gs when he was allowed 198.

What weight he goes will depend on how this Rocco Welsh bit plays out.

I want to see him at 184 because I want to see both Mirasola brothers starting.

Honestly, skill-for-skill, Ryder and Barr are a wash.  Barr has shown a motor where we haven't seen from Ryder, though.  Does that go away at 184lbs?

It isn't really that uncommon at PSU.  Bartlett did it.  Truax dropped a weight when he transferred - the exact drop we are discussing here.  Shakur Rasheed did the 197->184 drop too.  Jordan Conaway dropped a weight to man 125 the year Megaludis redshirted.  Facundo dropped a weight this year to try and make the team.

Alright alright, the point has been made. Barr is going to start no matter which weight he wants, which differentiates him from a lot of those, but you’re right they’ve had guys drop down.

I still think he stays.

Not sure how clear the different levels are for Barr, Ryder, and Welsh at this point.  I guess we will see.

He finished 2nd at NCAAs at 197. I say leave him at 197 and have him grow into it. He can pack on another 10 pounds of muscle that will come in handy.

Speaking of Barr, was there ever any info given as far as if he was still injured during NCAA’s?

Looked like hamstring correct?

Not to be obtuse, but if you are the highest returning placer at a weight, shy of getting beaten out, why would you drop down?

I'm saying he is a decent size 197 pounder right now. Most of the guys he was wrestling were 5th,6th,and 7th year wrestlers and of course they looked a little bigger. He will put on some more muscle this summer.
