So Facundo, Garcia and Steen are in the portal.  Is anyone else apt to follow suit?  Some possibilities:

1. Sealey.  There's no clear place for him next year unless Kasak redshirts, and I'm not hearing any rumbling that it's a possibility.  Even then I doubt he can beat Duke.  Even if Duke redshirts and ends up as Haines' successor at 174 in '26, Kasak and Mesenbrink each have 2 more years at 157-165.  I could see Sealey being willing to ride the pine for one year, but ... two?

2. Nagao. If he's healthy, he could slot in at 133 if Davis redshirts, or 141 if Blaze redshirts, but (a) I haven't heard anything about either redshirting, and (b) Ono is apt to be at one of those weights... if he gets his visa.  Having AA'd once and having only 2 years of eligibility left, I'm skeptical that he'd be willing to sit.

3. Connor Mirasola. Unless Connor can beat Barr (highly doubtful), he's stuck behind him for three years.  Or unless Barr goes down, but that seems unlikely since Barr really beefed up and most have Ryder penciled in at 184.  It's hard to believe someone as talented as Connor would ride the pine for 3 years, but with brother as the heir to HWT next year, it's hard to see one leaving without the other.

Can brothers not exist separately?

No! Silly question!

Kidding idk. I see them as a package deal I guess. They’re probably both best suited for 197, and they went together knowing one would have to go to a weight he’s worse at so they could be together.

Both are PA boys and seem pretty happy at Penn State.  Why would they move to Oklahoma?

Because they want 250 days a year of wind?

How so? OSU needs a 133. I'm sure Davis spent some training with Gilman/Kennedy when they were at PSU.

I believe RBY mentored Davis and was his primary training partner before moving on to CRTC, so there's also that

I kinda did too. I feel like Twins are different than just normal brothers.

The...mental telepathy stuff they talk about.

I hear Cole gets hungry when Connor is cutting? Wild...though I'm pretty sure I just made that up.

BUT onto Barr, even if he could go '84, why would he? So he can Wrestle the gantlet that is going to be 184?

I already did this and made a MUCH longer list, but just the young guys, Ferrari, Sinclair, Berge#5 seed, you had I think 3-4 other AAs this year. Norman from Stanford is long and a stud and he nearly beat O'Toole, but he gassed. Probably because he just walked out of Dachau to make 174, so I'd guess he goes up. There are others who are obvious, but I'm forgetting, and then there's the guy who s IMO, the favorite to win it the next couple years, the Freshmen who was a short and curly hair away from beating both Keck and Starocci this year.

In fact, all that should get Sinclair to go 174. I know he doesn't like cutting, but he's nowhere NEAR as big as any of those guys...

objective thought on Davis - If he is looking to leave, Michigan would be a great spot.

  • from there
  • has a redshirt to use
  • wrestle opens when available
  • spend a season working with Ragusin

Penn State's own fans are basically like, 'eh, it make sense for these two guys who took 5th as a Freshmen and as a Soph to transfer."

That' s a good indication of what they have coming in.

What type of recruit was Davis compared to Desmond and Perry(and anyone else other than Blaze/Ono who may go '33-'41?)

I believe Penn State had 38 listed on the roster this year.

Bartlett, Kerkvliet, McHenry, & Starocci are out of eligibility. Minus 4 makes 34.

I think they have six incoming Frosh, plus Ono. Plus 7 makes 41.

Dunbar, Evans, Facundo, Fricchione, Vespa, & Steen have entered the portal. Minus 6 makes 35.

Still a ways to go to meet the new 30 man roster limit.

It will be interesting to see where they land as other schools trim down to 30. I think that only the infamous Power 5 conferences are locked in and others schools have the choice of opting in to the whole revenue sharing & new roster rules.

Casual check at roster numbers for the top 25 this year.

Penn State: 38
Nebraska: 36
Oklahoma State: 34
Iowa: 34
Minnesota: 34
Ohio State: 32
Cornell: 44
NC State: 44

Some of those schools (~8) are not subject to the roster limits unless they opt into the settlement, which is set to be approved (or not) on April 7. The teams that are covered by the settlement (Power 5 schools) could then become feeders to smaller teams.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

The settlement is binding on all Power 5 conference schools - Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12 (or whatever), ACC, and SEC. All other schools get to decide if they want to opt in. Opting in means the school can make direct payments to athletes, but are then also subject to the roster limits (and all other provisions of the settlement).

The Ivies have already said they will not opt in, so their wrestling rosters can be whatever they want. I think they will still have scholarship limits.

Ivies don’t have scholarships
