Will we see a high profile/NCAA title threat type guy leave one of the big 3-5 programs to go to a competitor?

Given the new era of transfers and NIL deals, it seems inevitable at SOME point we'll see someone do it.  No offense to other programs, but I'm talking more of the Penn State/Iowa/Oklahoma State/Ohio State types here.  The closest we've come in Nagao leaving Minnesota to go to Penn State, but Minnesota has fallen off from their peak (though they're looking great this year!)  There were rumors over the summer that I may or may not have heard myself about Ayala getting offers.  So are we at that crticial breaking point yet?  I don't think we'll see any of those type of guys leave Penn State, but obviously a ton of speculation about some of their big recruits who don't appear to have spots in the lineup.

Greg transferred from Ohio State to Penn State.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

I know Rocco said he was staying at ohio state but there was a ton of smoke at the time that he was leaving I have to wonder if he gets some offers pitched this off season especially with how good he looked in Croatia.

If anything, I think the current NIL system makes athletes less likely to leave the big programs. If you are signing to go to any of the four schools you mentioned, you're already getting a notable NIL pay day for your services. If you're winning (Rocco Welsh) and someone tries to poach you, then your school may just pony up some extra money. If you're a backup transferring to try to get into a starting lineup, the opposing school has the upper hand and you'd likely be getting less from the new school than you were receiving prior. Take the Mirasola's for example, assuming they'd be a package, what big school can afford them and have a clear path for them to both be starters? I think you're more likely to see similar moves the Barraclough going back home for his final year rather than someone flipping early-mid career.

Haven't we already seen it with Iowa bringing in Buchanan, Parco, and Teemer this year? All three have been rumored to have gotten large payments. And all three have been ranked #1, or #2 at some point this season.

Not quite the same with Oklahoma State bringing in Hamiti and Hendrickson, but both are title contender types (or at least before Steveson came back).

It seems the big buyers at the moment are Oklahoma State and Iowa. Michigan has been there before, and may return. But The Cowboys and Hawkeyes have known deep pocketed supporters of wrestling.

So for me the question boils down to whether one of those two (maybe three) can knock someone loose from Penn State, Ohio State, or each other?

I would not say it is impossible. If the money is right, any one of the big 3-5 programs should expect to get poached.

Ferrari went from OkSt to Iowa for a cup of coffee

Kerk went from OkSt commit to OhSt student to PSU wrestler

Suriano took the long road from PSU to Michigan

Most notable was probably Mocco going from Iowa to OkST.

Since it has happened before NIL, I imagine it will certainly happen again in this new era.

I feel like the ones referenced in your first paragraph are guys coming from "lower tier" programs (and yes I know how douchey that sounds).  I'm talking more like a PSU guy to Iowa, Iowa guy to Okie State, etc.

As soon as I hit send, I thought that might be the response.

But a case can be made that if ASU had Parco and Teemer to go along with Figueroa, they would be a top 5 team. Who else, beside PSU, would have three guys with a realistic shot at the finals?

Yes, but they're not consistently in this area of the team race.  Maybe I'm parsing too much.

Can’t remember where I read it but there was rumor of 3 big time high school recruits transferring to Rutgers. It was between Iowa and PSU. I’m guessing we will see some shifting. Probably not a ton though

Which team would you consider as the #5 of your top 3-5 teams?  Cornell, Michigan (not this year..), NC State?

Michigan given the money aspect. It feels like Cornell is kind of in it's own area of recruiting.

Staying for the rest of the season maybe. Welsh is worrisome as a Buckeye fan...

Based on Wkn's post yesterday, Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Michigan, and Iowa get the most consistent influx of top 40 recruits and because of that, and their ability to bring in transfers, would be more likely to have this sort of issue of guys being left out of the lineup.

There is an absolute whack job on the Rutgers board who claims to be Tony Surage, two-time AA for Rutgers in the 80's, saying that Rutgers will get 2-4 PSU guys and 1-2 Iowa guys this off season who are "Suriano level guys", or something like that.

There is also another guy on the board who claims the first guy has a long history of BS and problematic posts.

The guy claiming to be Surage is currently going after Shayne Van Ness and his father for perceived lack of loyalty to Rutgers. So there is that too.

Agreed. PSU really has the logjam problem. But the far more interesting ones would be starters getting pried loose with the pay day.

With Parco and Teemer aren't they also technically "grad transfers"?

Yes, I was focusing more on the NIL element, though. Which I think was the motivator in these cases.

Also, while many grads take the opportunity to move on, not all do, and it certainly is not a requirement.
