I hear Flo and other sites saying Shapiro with a long i.  This would be an unusual pronounciation of a traditional name.  Does anyone know how Meyer says his family name?

It's a Delaware/Maryland pronunciation.  I thought they had it wrong until I heard him on camera checking in at the matside table.

They’ve had multiple conversations confirming the long i is correct.

This just in from the Pronunciations Pronouncement Department:

The other freshman phenom's name is pronounced Messenb-rye-nk.  At least in Delaware and Maryland.  Let's all get on our Aussie accents for these wrestlers.

Philly, too

I grew up in Bucks County (just north of Philly), and we certainly didn't pronounce it the way Meyer does(I was classmates with Eileen Shapiro).

I had twin brother bosses from Philly a few years back that did the opposite (and maybe that is the Philly thing?). I have a hard A in my last name, but they always said it with the soft A. The first time I heard it I didn't realize they were talking about me. It always made me chuckle.

Thought you dropped the hard "A" for a soft "no."

I grew up around Philly but on the southwest side and never heard it pronounced ShaPIEro ever.  He should just admit he can't pronounce his own name

What type of Bucks County guy were you?  Warminster tough guy?  Central Bucks Farmer?  Upper Black Eddy weirdo? Quakertown "that's in Bucks County?" Northeast Philly but its Bensalem?
