Diakomihalis secured three takedowns and Murin secured/gifted four escapes to make the score 6-4 after two periods.  Diakomihalis tacked on a reversal in the third to make it 8-4.  Murin earns his fifth escape and secured one takedown.  Diakomihalis won 8 to 7.  A fairer score is 8 to 2.

If there were zero points for escapes, the Rooks versus Van Ness match goes differently.  Rooks would be leading 6 to 0 at the beginning of the third period rather than 7 to 3.  The final score would be Rooks victory or overtime rather than a 9 to 7 Van Ness victory.

Fix this.

I dont hate it. But the concept of "control" is core to folkstyle and earning an escape point is tied into that.

Maybe top man can choose to restart in neutral at some point without giving the point

The bottom man's reward for getting back to his feet is being on his feet.  The bonus is preventing the top man from scoring control points

It is not okay to back away out of bounds.  It is worse to jump out of bounds.  It is disgusting to back straight out of bounds from the center mat on your own accord.  It is not okay to drive people out of bounds or to cut off the person circling back in.  The defender must attempt to circle back in.  I'm good to give out points to opponent of the instigator in each of those situations.

I just don't like when the bottom guy is basically out but is penalized with the RT clock still going because he's working for a reversal.

Risk and reward.  If he gets the reversal he gets 2 pts instead of 1.  He is free to make that decision.

i can live with points just being gifted to sub par wrestlers to keep the score artificially closer...

i can live with ride time points...

i can live with choice...

i can not live with not wrestling being incentivized and rewarded...

but...

folk gonna folk...

The freestyle rules crowd are actively trying to kill folk style.  By far the most popular domestic style.   Attendance figures should be posted at events like NCAAs vs WTTs.   It’s like an insurrection or something.   Folk style was fine…. Leave the rules alone.

I assume would not have been in favor of the old rule that you only got two for the first TD.  Each TD after that was only worth one point.

I was trying to look for that rule... doing a fast scan in my copy of The History of Collegiate Wrestling by Jarrius Hammond (BOOMER!)  Didn't find it yet.

If I recall, wasn't it for one season... don't exactly know when it happened (I'm thinking early 60's... some of the Okies played a lot of Take 'em down/let 'em up matches.)

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Increase points for repeated TDs instead of decreasing them if complex scoring is preferred.

I think this might be the best way. Particularly reversals are undervalued, IMO.

Absolutely are.  Also wish they could also pause riding time when it's determined the bottom wrestler is working for a reversal.  "Reversal Action Time Pause"

Another obvious loophole in the rules.  It should be one escape when top loses control, and a continuation point if the reversal is completed.
