(not that i have made a gaffe in this very thread spouting off stats)

I'm not gonna get into the Free vs Folk vs Greco argument; I'll watch and enjoy all styles but . . .

I'm gonna call BS on this one @LJB - I don't think you've ever let anything go; the other day you posted like 7 times in a row just to yourself in a thread haha

When did this happen...

Did I say that?  Whoops.  I meant Keegan O’Toole.  The only NCAA champs from the class of 2020 are Keegan O’Toole (2), Ferrari (1), and Trumble (1).  Ferrari and Amos might be the only top ten recruits in the class with remaining eligibility.

It’s a copy paste from a Flo article.  Same with the okst article.  Only point is he really surprised no one winning NCAAs his frosh year.  He was a highly ranked recruit.

The AI you used quoted the Flo article from April 2019 and put April 2020 as the date.  He fell from number 1 after he didn’t wrestle his entire senior season.

here are some numbers...

otto went to fargo twice (went to worlds the other 2 years)... won both times... 12 matches with 11 techs... did not surrender a point in 2 years... OW one of those years...

of those 12 matches-

  • 8 were against eventual DI wrestlers that have accounted for 3 NCAA qualifications and 1 AA since;
  • 1 DII kid;
  • 1 who went full time greco winning fargo the next year.. U20 WTT finalist... 2X U23 national championship finalist with one championship;
  • 2 who i can not find anything past HS wrestling.

roughly 1.2% of all High School wrestlers go on to DI and only 1% DII...

so...

75% of the kids otto wrestled in greco at fargo were in the top 1(ish)% of all high school wrestlers...

83% of the kids otto wrestled in greco at fargo have continued wrestling past high school...

again...

that paints a different picture than some would have you believe...

Wait.  D1 wrestlers are at the national championships?   And…. Often show up in later rounds of said national championships.    That’s crazy.

I literally copied and pasted it from the article itself.

The Flo article appears differently in their mobile app.  Looking at it in a desktop web browser I see the source of the confusion.  On the top it says "Last Updated on Apr 27, 2020 by Brock Hite" but that is most likely referencing the last update to the class of 2020 class ranking article series.  The rankings being displayed are from April 9th 2019. If you scroll to the bottom there is a little drop down box showing the date of the ranking. You can click it and select earlier or later dates.  Ferrari was number 1 as late as August 6, 2019 before dropping in the last two rankings.

Another give away that these are not the latest rankings you are looking at is at the bottom it says "or feedback, email me at [email protected]."  Willie left Flo in November 2019.  He did the 2020 recruiting class rankings in April and August of 2019.  Brock Hite took over after that and did the rankings in January and March of 2020.  It looks like he last updated them in April 2020 maybe with college commitment additions?  I don't know.

The OSU article backs up this timeline.  They refer to Ferrari as "the nation's former No. 1 overall recruit AJ Ferrari Jr." and "the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound wrestler in the class of 2020 at the time of his commitment." The OSU article was written in the Fall of 2020 and would have been published after the final recruiting class rankings.

The only point is he was a very highly rated dude  coming out of high school and it shouldn’t be a surprise he won an ncaa title.  The article literally says he could AA right now

Of course he was highly rated, but highly rated wrestlers coming out of high school routinely fail to AA or win a title in college.  In his class only one other top 10 recruit ended up winning a title (O'Toole) and 5 have not yet AAed.  The class of 2021 was similar with two top ten recruits winning titles (Hamiti and Figueroa) and 5 AAing so far.  2019 was a little better with 3 winning NCAA titles (Kerkvliet, Allirez, and Starocci) and 6 AAing.  None of those guys won as true freshman. Even top tier #1 recruits fail to win as true freshman.

Ferrari was highly ranked out of high school, but he was not expected to win that year as evidenced by his #4 seed at NCAAs.  Winning over Miles Amine who would go in to place 3rd at the Olympics later that year was definitely a surprise. OSU did a good job with him and Smith was more effective than a string of highly regarded coaches Ferrar would wrestle under later in his career.

Below is a list of all true freshman NCAA champs.

Dick Hutton OSU 1947
Dick Hauser Cornell 1947
Lowell Lange Cornell 1947
Bill Nelson UNI 1947
Pat Milkovich MSU 1972
Don Rohn Clarion 1973
Darryl Burley Lehigh 1979
Matt Reiss NC State 1980
Pat Smith OSU 1990
Lincoln McIlravy Iowa 1993
Teyon Ware OU 2003
Dustin Schlatter MN 2006
Kyle Dake Cornell 2010
J'den Cox Mizzou 2014
Myles Martin Ohio State 2016
Mark Hall PSU 2017
Spencer Lee Iowa 2018
Yianni Diakomihalis Cornell 2018
AJ Ferrari OSU 2021
Jax Forrest OSU 2026
Sergio Vega OSU 2026
Landon Robideau OSU 2026
