I love Spencer Lee and in his prime I would drop everything to watch him wrestle. But it's been a long time since we saw full Lee and now between glimpses of the old Lee I see someone who looks a little out of shape, a little vulnerable and a little, well, washed up. He didn't place in worlds last year and whille he still beats the second tier, LL was able to hold his own in period one and pull out a win in period two. I don't know but I think his days are numbered. If not this year, I see it coming soon.

Something needs to change… If he’s not being promised the HC job at Iowa, and he plans on competing through 2028, he needs to relocate to Stillwater.

I mean at this point, he isn't achieve his desired goals at iowa. I don't see why he stays. Him getting the next HC job is looking less likely, he just lost to a PSU wrestler that is 7 years younger than him. But Spencer has a chance to get that match back at final X

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

Lee looked the absolute best he has ever looked since 2019 overseas last month...

if you watched you would know...

Lilledahl is the smartest wrestler i have ever been around and that comes from his family...

it was clear from the start he wanted to keep it close and push to deep second period...

he did...

did i think he would wait until 2 seconds left?

no...

but they give you 6 minutes for a reason...

I don’t think he looks out of shape. He’s jacked.  He’s just balding and won’t let go of it.  I think that is altering your perception.  Gas tank has never been his strength.  Don’t think age has anything to do with it.

He looked great until he hurt his arm. Fast, crisp.

He did look good, positioning was solid and he was controlling the mat.

But regardless of the injury, it's a concern that he seemed to make a similar mistake today that he did against Ramos in the NCAA semis.  Both times he put himself in a throw situation by getting kind of a bear hug but with his head buried--and trapped--against the opponent's chest, and then couldn't defend the throw.

He just seems to not be able to close competitive matches at the end and it seems less like a gas tank or injury issue than a guy who isn't well prepared for those match situations.

The Ramos throw was not the fluke/catch many make it out to be. It was literally the 3rd time Ramos put Lee on his back.

Correct.  Totally serious post.  Keep going. Abdullaev > Lee

I think Lee looked pretty darn good. He’s a guy that has that wow factor because he can tech a lot of really good wrestlers. I think that lead to people believing he was a lock for a world champ. While I agree he has that potential, he’s still going to be tight with those top guys. Luke is one of those guys. He’s a world champ at U17, U20, and U23! Anyone that does that is going to be right there at senior level too. If we send either one of those guys, I like our chances, but nothing is a lock.

Fair point. So it could have been the injury and not the level of competition at all.

Lee looked firmly in control until his arm got hurt. He did come back and I don’t know if he actually got injured or if it was more of a quick sting type of thing. But after that sequence he didn’t look the same, so I think it’s hard to say that he is worn out and his days are behind him.

a couple if things:

Lee looked really good until his right elbow got jacked, changed the match.

having a leftie HL in the arsenal for just that type of scenario is priceless! LL wasn't going to stand in the middle and concede the end of the match.

(okay, 3 things - if you have them, make your kids wrestle Greco and learn to throw from both sides - don't be that shit parent that only cares about results for your little kid age-grouper, have them drill, train, experiment in matches and develop!)

It's mental. Always has been. Iowa as a team suffers from it. As big of a Hawkeye Homer as I am, I'm also a huge Lee fan and for his sake I hope he strongly considers transferring if he doesn't get a medal this summer

Peebs is right. I thought Spencer looked fine but worry that he'll become a headcase after losing another big(ish) match.

Idk if this is still his approach, but for a long time he's said he refuses to watch tape and doesn't like watching his opponents. I get Spencer's mentality, "I shouldn't have to adjust to my opponents, they should have to adjust to me" which sounds tuff and all, but maybe a little game planning can help narrow the gap. If there's a rematch with LL, I hope his adjustments aren't limited just to what he remembers about his feel.

He's still the pick.  I don't think there is much doubt it will be Lilledahl and Lee in Final X. If/when that happens, most will pick Lee despite last weekend.

To be fair, it's pretty hard to pick against an olympic silver medalist wrecking ball who got a draw last year that casuals won't appreciate. US is in prime position either way to bring home a medal... or more...

Feel for Spencer Lee when threads like this get made.  Washed up?  He hasn't even turned 30!  But because we have heard the name for so long and associated it with "dominance," then anything less begs the question of if he's still got it.

I think he does.  He's taken losses to plenty of other elite wrestlers over the years.  Nothing new.  He won an Olympic Silver less than 2 years ago.
