I remember going to one of his MN camps with my high school team back in the summer of 2002. He was definitely a legend of the sport. May he Rest in peace.

A legend.  I still have my "I did it" shirt from however many years ago that camp was. Will never throw it away.

It’s hard to put into words what Coach meant to so many of us.

He was a great man who impacted more lives than he probably ever realized. Not just the best wrestlers, not just the standouts, but every single one of us who stepped on the mat for him. If you wrestled for Coach, you were changed. Whether you saw it then or not.

Truth is, most of us didn’t realize it at the time. It wasn’t until we got older, faced real life, real struggles, that it all started to make sense.

In one of my darkest hours, Coach said something to me that I wasn’t expecting. Simple words, but they stuck. They helped me more than he will ever know. That’s just who he was.

He didn’t just teach wrestling. He helped make us men.

Rest easy, Coach. And thank you.

That’s to keep your whining ass shut. You want off this ranch, you got it. I’ll drive your ass to the train station myself.

When I was media I spent a decade flying through Minneapolis on my way to events in Vegas. Seemed like at least once a year I was waiting for a flight and had some great conversations with j rob. He was insightful about every level of the sport. Those conversations helped to push me from reporting to coaching and those kids I worked with got the benefit and in turn so did I. Thanks. RIP coach

He recruited Idaho back in the day and landed the Lawrence brothers. He brought his teams back here to do camps and team rafting trips.  I took my teams to those camps and learned a ton from him as a coach. I took more from him than  any camp I had been to as a wrestler or a coach. I took it with me my entire career. Great guy...excellent instructor and coach.  We have lost some good ones this year.

RIP JRob

Wearing the "I did it" shirt during warmups was some straight up mental warfare back in the day.

Seems to be a universally respected man by all that knew him, he will be sorely missed. The true story of someone's impact is shown by some of the posts here, even some short interactions with him had a lifetime impact on people's train of thought and approach to coaching.

A true leader, requiescat JRob

RIP Coach.  One of the legends of our sport and a great man.

His 2001 NCAA title may never be duplicated.  No finalists but 10 All-Americans.  Three guys finished 3rd, three more finished 4th, two finished 8th, one each finished  5th and 6th, respectively.  The Gophers' # 1 seed at HWT lost a heartbreaker in the semis by one point in OT, but came back to pin his opponent in 42 seconds for 3rd place, to win that year's Gorriaran Award.

I believe Robinson and Douglas both had the same number of wins -  440

Losing some great ones... some others are also getting up there in age.

Jammenz...I agree, it was a GREAT article from Kyle. My condolences to Sue and J's entire family and the countless members of the Minnesota wrestling family who now mourn.  Thank you for the job J as JROB Director for so many years and most importantly, for the countless memories!

I moved to MN in 1994 and soon found a vibrant wrestling culture there.   At the top was U of Minn with J Robinson.   I thought that was an interesting first name.   I have a ton of respect for him and hope his family is comforted knowing that he affected the lives of so many people.    That was his greatest accomplishment.
