  1. The coaches go the coaches convention to throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks or gets some traction, on intermat we come here. If the right idea makes it here, it could make it there. I am all for true seconds or thirds. Matches and podium spots get decided on the mat, not at the seed meeting or by luck of the draw. At the time they are a pain or asking you to go above and beyond as a coach, parent, coach, fan in the stands, ref, or tournament worker, but at the same time they are the right thing to do
  2. It would be a good go between for a 97kilo/213lbs international wrestler that competes in college at 197 or 220/222/224 Could go 11 weights at 30 per weight, top two seeds get a bye or d2/d3 champs could earn an invite and you go 352 to round out the 32 man bracket. How about drop to 32 qualifiers per weight and hold a last chance open national qualifier series to earn spot number 33. Open it up to any d1 non starter with criteria, d2/d3 NCAA champ/finalist/medalist/aa. A team with two qualifiers in a weight might make for some great medal round matchups, finals and lead to teammate on teammate matches at NCAAs, an all Oklahoma State final, Penn State vs Iowa in the championship with the semis loser doubling it up with an iowa vs. Penn State consolation finals, or two guys from Virginia tech might both lose to the same guy from Michigan or beat the same guy from Arizona State
  3. That's a solid take and know several coaches in similar situations outside the b10
  4. Nice to see discussions heating up and new topics with the season coming near. With constantly changing eligibility rules, 5-5, etc do we want to see d1 make any changes to expand or change post season or qualifying process? Does 33/330 have to be a hard number? Does 10 entries per team in 10 different weights have to be fixed at the qualifying level? Could we keep 10 entries per team but allow a school to run out the lowest eight weights with double entries at 125 and 133 and no 197/285? In a hard 33/330 world and keeping 10 weights, could we allow conferences or schools to enter more wrestlers per qualifier? Bring 11/12/13/14 but you only qualify what your conference earns If 33/330 isn't a hard number... Could we have more weights but less qualifiers per weight?? Could we bring back D2/D3 champs with additional rat tails? Thoughts, suggestions, jump off a bridge?
  5. I could assume but don't know if J wants it right now or will when it is open to be honest. when Tom steps away to a likely Dresser roll j will be going on twenty years as a loyal assistant. His kids will be of an age he may want to be more hands on. I don't want to speak for him I don't see jaggers leaving Ohio state to coach elsewhere. He has had opportunities and he is a Buckeye. Logan would be the next man up. I could see entire staff staying with an additional practice corner coach filling toms spot not to head coaching job just number four.
  6. In recruiting rankings... Absolutely, in getting guys in the starting line up... No doubt, qualifying for and/or getting seeded in the post season..., Yes sir, progressing and placing in the Olympic styles domestically and internationally... absolutely. production beyond the blood round in the collegiate post season is where I am looking. Mendez (3rd,1st,1st,2nd), feldmen (5th, nq 3-2, nq 2-2), shumate (1x nq, 2-2 dnp), bouzakis (3x nq, 2-2 each year), gavin brown (spot starts two year, full time starter at Purdue dnq in 26), mccrone (2x nq, 1-2 dnps) geog (2x nq, 1-2, 3-2) No disrespect intended to any. Injuries, opportunities, matchups, weights and weight management, styles matter, and college wrestling is freaking hard. How many titles, how many finals, how many all American finishes, how high of finish, how many wins on the front side, who did you beat, who beat you, did you win the head to head, mhow many team points did you score and how many get left on the floor. 15 trips, 5 podiums, one 2x champ/4x AA With today's eligibility uncertainty i only hope to see anyone on the Ohio State roster in the lineup and ending the year with hands raised on the mat and a step up or step on the podium. Brown, geog, and mccrone will all be starting fifth years at Purdue, Mizzou, and UNC. Wish nothing but best and think all could do damage in right brackets. Hepner surprised a lot of people last year I would think Jaggers or Logan would be the most likely hires based on loyalty, time in room, a clean program history, success on mat and in class. Would like to see some non tOSU people coming to rtc or on some staff to bring in new ideas, experiences, different approaches. Assuming ryans replacement is in house does not mean every hire or every rtc athlete has to be an ohio state graduate. No one has to leave for someone new to come in
  7. I doubt the Ohio State administration will be heating up tom ryans seat but I think it should already be warm. After twenty years the program is in good shape, accomplishing more under Ryan than every other coach combined. Tom is one of only three active coaches to win a team title. At the same time the program has stagnated since COVID in finishes and in recruiting. If the goal is competing for team titles instead of hanging your hat on individual finalists, the machine should be moving. Pre-covid, Penn State had pulled ahead and has since increased that gap. Oklahoma state appears to have done the same thing even faster. Ohio state needs both to fall flat on their face in a tournament setting or a lot of help from the field to get a trophy as opposed to hoping everything goes right and they get 2-3 wins against a back up or two in a dual setting With Iowa remaining Iowa, Virginia Tech on the rise, and Penn State and Oklahoma State competing for titles, does Ohio State value team titles and team trophies or individual All Americans, an annual finalist, and hoping for fifth? Whether Ryan retires after 30 years as a head coach, gets put on hot seat, or gets pushed out in the near future, the Buckeyes should be looking forward to know if the next guy is already on campus or who they are interested in bringing in. Mess up Ryans replacement and buckeyes might not just get bumped off the stage to fifth but out of the top ten all together.
  8. Do you think Michigan State or Wisconsin would change anything if they finished 18th in the Big Ten back to back years or do they take their lumps and stand behind their men?
  9. The thing about hindsight is it's always much clearer. How about an unseeded freshman ACC champ Darrion Caldwell vs Ryan Lang 2007 big ten champ in the NCAA quarters. Lang got the first period fall but Caldwell had three tds and a nearfall. DC opened with -30 second fall against a double digit seed. Draws into andy simmons, scores every way but backs to lead when simmons mffs match and career. Draws into top seed Ryan Lang Lang would lose his undefeated season to nathan morgan in the finals and DC had his season end in the r12 by fall to J jaggers in a six minute barn burner. Everyone remembers the 149 DC or his senior year ended by injury like simmons, not so much his freshman 141 run that came up short. That place was roaring before and after all of DCs matches that year. He won the crowd for his career there as metcalf was still two years away, and it carried through the salute he was given as a senior.
  10. Joey Baker, Navy vs Nick Fanthorpe, ISU blood match for seventh place in 2008. Match took over a half hour with all the down time. Credit to Tony Rotundo
  11. I would take Jordan as a four timer. Ohio State won the team tile over Iowa by 30+ his freshman year. Iowa went 0-2 at 165, Jordan took third losing in semis to Deringer 6-1. His sophomore year Ohio state was third by 30+ behind PSU/OKST, and he placed third again losing to Issac 5-4 in the semis who lost in finals to derringer. Junior year made finals lost 5-2 to hall and Ohio state second to PSU by thirty plus. As a senior, Ohio state finished second by seven to PSU for team title, took fifth losing to Lewis on the front side and amine on the backside. Hall beat Lewis in the semis, lost to valencia in finals. Amine beat lewis in ot for third. The only way bo could have helped the team by winning a title or being a finalist would have been beating lewis in the quarters and Hall in the semis his senior year. He wrestled valencia first dual of season that year losing 9-4. Lost two championship semis, won one as a junior. He had his cracks. Can't count the all Americans he beat, know the ones he didn't. Different year, weight, bracket, I could see Jordan winning a title, winning a match in a series against anyone except derringer or valencia
  12. the distinction between the two in my mind is the public perception of NCAA champs is above 4x AAs, and I used the word "great" which i feel involves public perception.....but whatever 4x AAs allowed! I agree that the public perception is as such. I also think if I was awarded the opportunity to choose for myself, I would take the one title. However, the consistency at that level is extremely impressive, as well. In a blind draw I would take a 4x AA over a 1x champ every time based on consistency. What happened to that one time champ not named Jesse Whitmer his other 3-4 years.
  13. How is this entire situation not entirely Chris Bono's fault? At least point the fingers in the right direction.
  14. What do Ace and Gary have to do with this discussion?
