Duke has a cradle locked in against Robideau in OT, called a takedown but later the call is reversed after review.

Very very bad.  If the refs just waited a few seconds he likely scores the TD definitively.

Though credit to Robideau.  He conserved his energy very well and had great defense.

PJ supposedly tweaked a groin at the end of his quarters match...it seemed to sap his explosiveness.  I think Trelly wins it all again...he has ice in his veins.

It wasn't the biggest robbery of the hour.  He got stopped from probably scoring by the action being stopped.  Davino got robbed of an actual score.

Robideau proved himself to be the better wrestler tonight. PJ Duke couldn't hang once he met somebody with similar strength.

605 takedowns to set a national record. Rubbadub was qualified.

Davino definitely had a TD that wasn't awarded and that was a worse call, but stopping that action probably cost Duke the match.

Both can be true. Though I'd argue PJ locking up a cradle, being close to exposure, the ref calling a td for him while he still had it locked up with like a minute left and would have inevitably scored, is easily the worse call.

Well, he had to stop the match if he awarded the takedown. I don’t think it was a terrible call to award the takedown then, but I agree with the review that it probably wasn’t at that time (almost certainly would’ve if they kept wrestling though). Seems like they need to consider a rule change because of these stupid reviews.

How can a guy almost having a TD in OT and it getting stopped be a worse call then a guy who actually had a TD in OT and it wasn't called?

PSU gets the benefit of a lot of calls.  I don't think if Alvan locks the exact situation of on Mesenbrink he gets the call that quickly from the same ref.  UNfortunately for Peter John Duke, he was a victim of the reffing that generally sees PSU get a lot of calls.

The crazy thing is, he got the benefit of a borderline call earlier than he should have.  People say the ref "stopped it." Not like the ref stopped him from scoring, he gave 3!

Of the way the rule works. The ref can always add a takedown later, they can’t put you back in the position. You can agree or disagree with the davino/blaze call but multiple refs look at it and decide. The pj call was worse bc the refs mistake can’t be overcome by the wrestler or other refs. Every refs knows its better to not call it and let them wrestle than call it prematurely.

As a ref, I agree.  But there is a "reaction time" debate this year, and a lot of the same people pissed about the call are probably in the "no reaction time" crowd.

I'll settle both of the Duke AND Davino ref gaffs:

Make up call(s) for not giving Jordan Oliver (Okie State) the TD in the finals against Streebler (Ohicko State)

This is awesome logic.  Because they all got it wrong in the Davino match that means it wasn't as bad.

Duke got screwed.  If the thread title says Duke got screwed, it probably gets a bunch of agreement.

But it's the idea that this was some next level thing when we all watched an even worse one an hour earlier.

Duke was one of about a hundred guys who have had a bad call go against them this weekend.  It's awful for him.  But you need to have a very specific shade of glasses to think it's more than that.

Thanks for appreciating my logic. I’m glad you changed your mind.

Nah, this is an iconically bad call. Not quite top tier like getting actual scoring wrong or not calling an obvious pin.

But this has gotta be the 3rd worst I've seen since watching the tourney over like the last 30 years.

I tend to be on the side or refs because most people don't realize they are calling it as it's defined in the rule book and a lot of times new controversial calls stem from changes to controversial calls from prior seasons (like reaction time).  It's an imperfect system one way or another.  What the ref did in the Duke match was wrong.  How the ref reacted during  the Davino match was correct but was reviewed incorrectly.  Or maybe it wasn't because I have no idea what a takedown is anymore.

Iconic was when Robideau reversed him in double OT and Duke was flat on his belly and just started shaking back and forth while looking at the ref like being ridden hard was somehow unfair.

Their premature call of the takedown was entirely unfair for the reason stated but it was not a takedown when called. Tough one but actually was the “right” call in the moment…unfortuntely, it put both wrestlers back on their feet when pj had an overwhelming advantage when first incorrectly called..what rule change could solve that riddle.

I don't think this call is talked about other than maybe an occasional "controversy" reference when speaking back to Duke's freshman year. IIRC Daton had multiple very controversial things go his way his final year and here I can't even recall exactly what they were.. I know one was against Ragusin.
