I tend to be on the side or refs because most people don't realize they are calling it as it's defined in the rule book and a lot of times new controversial calls stem from changes to controversial calls from prior seasons (like reaction time).  It's an imperfect system one way or another.  What the ref did in the Duke match was wrong.  How the ref reacted during  the Davino match was correct but was reviewed incorrectly.  Or maybe it wasn't because I have no idea what a takedown is anymore.

cael spoke to that in the post game…always love his interviews but there will always be that gap between the perfect and the good and i don’t know how you can solve it

Their premature call of the takedown was entirely unfair for the reason stated but it was not a takedown when called. Tough one but actually was the “right” call in the moment…unfortuntely, it put both wrestlers back on their feet when pj had an overwhelming advantage when first incorrectly called..what rule change could solve

Nah, this is an iconically bad call. Not quite top tier like getting actual scoring wrong or not calling an obvious pin.

But this has gotta be the 3rd worst I've seen since watching the tourney over like the last 30 years.

He didnt hve the takedown at the time it was called…definite..but he got screwed because he likely would have gotten it had they let it continue….not black and white…but not sure what the right thing to do was upon review…not a takedown but likely would have been if they let action continue…shit happens..need to regroup…he didn’t

Legit.  I likely was going to get every takedown I didn’t get too.

I don't think this call is talked about other than maybe an occasional "controversy" reference when speaking back to Duke's freshman year. IIRC Daton had multiple very controversial things go his way his final year and here I can't even recall exactly what they were.. I know one was against Ragusin.

Bad calls are part of any game.  Landon wrestled for OT and it was on Duke not to put himself in that position.  Same mental fart he had with Taylor in their first match.  He'll learn from it

my point was the stoppage hurt PJ doubly…had he been given the chance with a cradle in, he would have likely completed a legit takedown…at the time it was called, he had not…the premature call unfairly put them both on their feet…but i cant think of a way to do it more fairly…can you?

Like I said.  I likely would have had all my TDs that were stopped too.   I was pretty cool lol

Any refs out there, was it also a mistake to stop the action even if it was a takedown, which it wasn't, because Duke had a cradle which even after a takedown he should have been allowed to continue with to pursue a fall until his locked hands were broken?

He had a cradle and knocked him to this far hip. Feels like a takedown for me, and if it isn't, it should be.

A gaggle of refs didn’t think so on replay.  Maybe don’t leave it up to the refs and then leave it up to the replay.

You are replying to a comment I didn't make. My comment is that should be a takedown, period.

Duke has a cradle locked in against Robideau in OT, called a takedown but later the call is reversed after review.

That... was BAD.

If Blaze wins at '33... I might say it was equal. BUT, as I was watching that match, I said to the guys I was watching it with, if you let the other guy stay in it, fluke shit happens.

Duke let Robideau stay in it. Duke also looked like he gassed from pushing and handfighting so much, but he didn't have enough clean shots.

So credit to Robideau, but what an AWFUL call. Duke gets the pin there if they don't blow it dead(probably, definitely gets the TD).

It's fair to say you are by far and away the worst poster on this board. Constantly complaining and starting arguments for no reason.

Why didn’t the gaggle of refs who reviewed it agree with you then?

How many Iowa should  have won besides the crazy refs not always agreeing with Iowa are started today.  You can count.  I think it’s zero though.

So zero ?   Got It.

Wrestling by zero is undefined, as there is no number that can be multiplied by zero to get a non-zero result

He had it prior... and he still had a pinning combination, so why blow it dead.

"At the time it was called." Maybe they were allowing for reaction time? I don't know, but cradle, guy on his hip. I thought Duke was about to get the fall.

If PJ Duke goes on and wins 3 National Titles after this year... as I think he will, this one will get talked about.

We still talk about how Mesenbrink lost as a Freshmen and that had nothing to do with anyone's mistake but his own and it's speculation.

It's still Duke's fault... just as it would have been McEnelly's fault if he lost to Ferrari and it WILL be his fault if he doesn't beat Welsh. Duke is good enough, he should have scored earlier.

There are zero threads about refs screwing Iowa

there are 83 million posts by psu fans crying that the best team ever assembled in the history of this planet we’re screwed by the refs

The  best team in the history of earth not on only should not  rely on the refs for their wins…..

they should tip their hat in a sportsmanlike gesture to those that beat them.

The last part is the most important part.   Intrinsically psu fans are not good at this part.  It’s part of the reason they are bad for the sport.   I think it may be an eagles or Phillies or whatever thing.
