When was the last time you saw a good team have all 10 of their starters perform worse than their capabilities? Not a single Cornell wrestler had a good end of the championship season.

Of the way the rule works. The ref can always add a takedown later, they can’t put you back in the position. You can agree or disagree with the davino/blaze call but multiple refs look at it and decide. The pj call was worse bc the refs mistake can’t be overcome by the wrestler or other refs. Every refs knows its better to not call it and let them wrestle than call it prematurely.

Draw? They have great athletes, but poor development. Shapiro gets worse every year. Ruiz got worse all season, peaked in the summer. They had 4 weights where they couldn’t compete within the ivy league. They used to have to best mat returns and riding in the country. Koll was a great coach who built a great program. They have lived off the fumes for the past few years but the cracks have been obvious.

Today was the worst day of wrestling for Cornell since 2003.

Burroughs has 1 olympic medal. He isn’t the Goat. The olympics are the pinnacle of the sport, 10 olympic-year non-olympic-weight world championships are not worth 1 olympic title. Smith has 2 olympic golds, big bruce has 1.5.

I would say that folk hinders wrestlers in the lower weight classes more. Stylistically most sports diverge more in the lower weight classes just due to physics. At heavyweight, there are less scrambles and less freestyle exposures. At heavyweight, in folk style, you are much more likely to give up a TD if you take a bad shot than at the lower weights, so big boys are more strategic naturally. Snyder, Gable etc look very similar in freestyle and folk with the biggest difference being the pushout. It may be a better question to ask why we are successful at 57 kg than why we are unsuccessful at 65. That might just be it is a less competitive weight class, or something else.

I don’t think it is complicated. Koll spent 30 years at Cornell and built it as far as he could take it. He wasn’t going to catch Penn State, so he wanted a challenge and thought he could help Stanford. Covid probably did reduce his loyalty toward Cornell, they did not let them compete in 2021. He goes to Stanford and it doesn’t work out. He has a unique opportunity to go to his Alma Mater and he takes it. It seems like he made good decisions. The wrestling community is lucky to have him.
