English is my first language, but I'm admittedly still learning. Is a "hay day" the same as a "field day"? I don't think I've ever heard that term...

Alfalfa hay is harvested ~ every four weeks.  So when ready ya gotta put off the other field work and have a "hay day."

Wasn't Warner known for lack of offense? Does this confirm there's a new Iowa Style of a more defensive wrestling approach?

Not sure that's the part to be bothered by.  The team is currently coached by two of the most aggressive wrestlers in history, and...well...

Plus Penn State:  while Cael was obviously an offensive monster, it's not like Casey Cunningham or Cody Sanderson or Jake Varner were offensive dynamos.  They were good wrestlers, though, and they, especially Casey, are apparently EXCELLENT coaches.

So I'm not as worried about Warner's style.  The problem, to me, is the insistence on staying within the Iowa bubble.  Although there's some indication that they legit were in on on Yianni.  A somewhat connected poster on the Iowa boards thought Yianni was a done deal, and it appears that the shifting dynamic at Cornell may have been a product of Cornell catching wind and making room for their alumni legend.

Nothing against Warner but that’d be very meh.  Any chance it’s Warner AND Yianni?  Could he join the RTC and then be a “volunteer”?

he just waited around for the guy to shoot and his hips were insanely heavy so yeah.

They need a hire that indicates they are turning over the room to someone else. Every staff should have one tom or terry, I really think them and Jones are the best we have as far as tuning up the best guys for worlds, but they don't know how to develop guys at the "lower" level. They should be putting Terry in Dennis' job and bring in pritzlaff as associate head with whoever he wants to bring with him.

Iowa is criticized for their wrestlers lack of offense and fear of scrambling so they potentially hire JACOB WARNER!?

I had to rewatch some of his old matches to see if he did as little as I remember. This focus on only hiring former Hawkeyes is only going prevent Iowa from improving on their weak points even more.

This would be a good example of having a "hay day"

Valid. I question the same method with Ohio St- Jaggers, Stieber and Jordan. Maybe a freshalternative background is worth a shot.

I agree. I think the fresh perspective can really help not ending up in an echo chamber. The Brands probably want an assistant coach they know won't really challenge them.

Real fans know. Lots of peanut gallery pundits used to the same old same old.

Exactly. If Iowa wants to see any meaningful change, they need to look outside the family. I'm still hoping that the timing works out so that Nolf can wind down his competitive career, continue coaching and administering his youth club, then take the reins when Brands is done.

I love Jacob Warner, but  come on TNT if you going to replace telford it needs to be someone who has credentials, individual nattys. I don't think warner would be the right move.

More credentials? As in being able to shoot yourself in the leg? You're right, Warner loses that one.

How does @mr.nonothingatall feel about this?

I mean he is right, this new hire is a chance for the brands to show a change they can either hire someone that is polar opposite and let them teach new things, or they can make the yes man hire and continue to struggle on offense and recruiting. Only time will tell

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

So my suggestion is still in the family but a little further removed. I suggest Jody Stritmatter & Eric Juergens. They are Iowa alumni but it has been a few years.

they need names. Pritzlaff is barely a big enough name to qualify with his rescent success(despite being the perfect guy). If you take David Taylor's name away his ability to grub money and recruit is not even comparable. And thats not a knock, he earned a big name.

Well, this is pretty much it for Hawkeye fans. Hawkeye wrestling fans have now become Nebraska football fans where we keep living in the pasts and all we do is hire people who once were part of the program and bringing them back and expecting change except for it doesn't work and they are still trying it. I love Jacob Warner. I enjoyed watching him wrestle, which apparently others didn't. I enjoyed watching him wrestle, but this was not the correct decision for the new assistant coach. They had the opportunity to go out of their comfort zone to show a level of change that would benefit a program that needed more scrambling, more offense, better positional awareness, and just an overall change for power of recruiting and they have definitely failed to do that. I have a hard time believing that they didn't interview someone else that wasn't at least a one-time individual national champion. I just can't fathom it
