  1. Yes, that is the PSU bump. They tend to perform closer to their seed than others. During the Cael Sanderson era it looks like this on a seed vs average finish basis: And the PSU specific distribution looks like this:
  2. Indeed, 7 would be shocking, even after applying the PSU bump. Without the PSU bump the total looks like 2 - 3 this year. Maybe 3 - 4 with the bump. For perspective a #1 seed historically wins just over half the time (52.3%).
  3. Yes. Nagao - 3 Bartlett - 3 Shayne Van Ness - 2 Levi Haines - 1 Carter Starocci - 1 Bernie Truax - 2 Aaron Brooks - 1 Greg Kerkvliet - 1
  4. I think back to my own experience as a swimmer in the 70's and 80's. I was a distance swimmer, and the mantra was all about miles. Put in more miles, volume, volume, volume. There were days I swam as many as 10 miles. The idea was to over-train for most of the year then pick two meets to peak for by tapering the training. As a result I got burnt out by the time I was sin college and my labrums are frayed messes. The focus now is on quality over quantity. There is more sports science employed, and it gets better results. I think the same is true for wrestling. Just because they used to wrestle a lot of matches does not mean that was the right number of matches to wrestle.
  5. I have found other errors on wrestlingstats too. And it is still gold. As for pinfalls, I have found them at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Take that.
  6. wrestlingstats is gold if you are interested in the entire history of the NCAA tournament. I have not spent much time on the team specific pages, but I have spent a stupid amount of time looking at NCAA brackets. wrestlestat is gold if you are interested in match by match details for both the regular season and the tournament. However, that detail only extends back to 2014. Both sites are indispensable.
  7. Anchoring effect. If you start too low it takes a lot of time to move up.
  8. https://uww.org/brightcove_video/19782 UWW recently posted all of Taylor/Yazdani as a single 53 minute video. The first two minutes of that first match Taylor looks like he has no business being on the mat with Yazdani. That changed.
  9. It was created by Jairus "Jay" Hammond who passed away in 2013. I think someone from Lehigh maintains it, but not sure who.
  10. I think Ruhlman is the starter
  11. Thanks, @lu_alum for posting these. One thing to note is that for pre-allocation purposes the magic date is Feb. 23. Matches after Feb. 23 are not taken into account for conference allocations, though they are taken into account for seeding purposes. One more thing to note is that the thresholds for the pre-allocation categories are not fixed. They can slide up or down in concert in order to achieve a desired range for pre-allocations per weight, with the max being 29.
  12. It is a fair question. I do not know the answer. But it seems like there is a clear trade off. To get better at wrestling you should wrestle. But wrestling wears the body down and can make you worse at wrestling. Getting that balance right is why the coaches get paid the big bucks (well, in some cases).
  13. No. They will have enough for 2 of 3 categories (coaches' poll, winning %) which is all you need to earn the conference an allocation.
  14. Didn't meet the minimum match requirement by Thursday, the voting deadline.
  15. Top 10 largest upward and downward changes in team scores on the season
  16. had a couple nice cognacs lately. maybe I can work something up.
  17. Tope 10 upward and downward contributors to team scores for the season
  18. The top 10 upward and downward contributors to team scores for the week of Jan 23
  19. Iowa's inability to hang on to the top spot at 125 is reflected in their inability to hang on to the projected second spot as Missouri returns to the position after a one month fall from grace. Meanwhile PSU extends their advantage to an expected 62 points. Still short of where the gap stood in the pre-season, but definitely going the wrong way for the field. PSU is getting dangerously close to doubling the second place total again.
  20. Good choice of words. There does seem to be a certain religious fervor here for calling everything a duck.
  21. Some big differences between Intermat's and Flo's 125 rankings this deep into the season. The biggest difference is Brandon Kaylor. Flo has him at 5, Intermat at 15. That big diff is probably caused by their second biggest diff. Flo has Troy Spratley at 11 while Intermat has him at 20. With Kaylor's pinfelling Spratley Sunday, Spratley's rank seems to be the pivot point for Kaylor.
  22. Updated about an hour ago. Ramos, Stanich, Barnett, Davis
  23. The power of the data compels me.
  24. You are not mis-remembering. Two coaches left him off. The story from the NCAA was that they were using an old list, or some such. There was someone else who was also affected, though I don't recal who. It really illustrated that the coaches do not place as high a priority about getting it right for other teams as they do for their own. Which is also an argument for you suggestion of using Intermat, Flo, etc.
