NCAA Tournament Dec, MD, TF Breakdown
Wrestleknownothing replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
@grogs84 did the heavy lift on data and was kind enough to share it with me. -
And That is Final The most common final score in an NCAA tournament match (1998 - 2021) that ends with either a decision, major decision or tech fall is (yawn) 3-2 followed by 3-1. Same final score data, but organized differently (single score axis with winning scores color coded and labeled to make it easier to read). MOV It On Over While 3-2 is the most common score, the most common margin of victory is 2 points, though it varies significantly by round. Things tighten up a bit in the semifinals. A full 28.5% of those were 1 point matches. Not surprisingly 8 is more common than either 7 or 9. Similarly 15+ is more common than 12 - 14 combined.

Have you tried using wrestlestat's match up tool? It does a nice job of showing common opponents and rankings.

Pinfalls - The Dark Side
Wrestleknownothing replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
BTW another pinfall factoid. Between 1988 and 2021 there was only one weight, one year that did not feature a pinfall. In 1994, the 150 weight class had no pinfalls AND no tech falls. Lincoln McIlravy won with three majors among his five matches and an average margin of victory of 9.2 points. -
Pinfalls - The Dark Side

I hope you are happy. I just had to fire my copy editor. -
No One Talks About the Pinfelled Sure David Taylor had 11 pinfalls in his illustrious NCAA tournament career. Everyone knows that. And a few of you probably even know that Sylvester Terkay, Mark Perry, and Corey Olsen each had 8 pinfalls in their time at NCAAs. But how come no one is talking about Zack Giesen's 8 NCAA tournament pinfalls? Oh yeah, right. It is probably because he was on the wrong end of 7 of those. But don't get me wrong. He may be my new favorite wrestler. Zach Giesen wrestled for Stanford from 2008 - 2011 and won 110 matches, ending his career 4th on Stanford's all-time list. He was an All-American in 2011 finishing in sixth place. In high school he was a four timer while also earning three letters in football along with an all-state honor. In short, the dude was a stud. And somehow he still found himself staring at the lights an amazing 7 times. Let's be clear about one thing. Zach Giesen was a better wrestler than just about everyone on these forums. But there is more. He is also smarter than all of us. There are a lot of brains to go with that brawn. That is Dr. Giesen, to you. He is now a Dr. of Osteopathic Medicine specializing in invasive cardiology. Holy crap. Pinfalls - The Dark Side Honorable Mention. You can only get pinfelled a maximum of three times in any one NCAA tournament. No fun, I know. Of course that also means you are an All-American. So there is that. Between 1988 and 2021 there were two wrestlers to earn All-American the hard way. In 2017 Zac Brunson finished sixth while getting pinned three times. He was notable for getting pinned twice by the same wrestler, Brain Realbuto, in the quarters and in the fifth place match. But don't say he didn't learn anything. After getting pinfelled in 1:12 in the quarters he took what he learned there to make it to the 1:15 mark in the fifth place match. In 2016 Alec Pantaleo also finished sixth while getting pinfelled three times. I imagine that tournament left a bad taste in his mouth as his three pinfalls were in a row. After making it to the semis he went pinfall, pinfall, pinfall. Ouch, ouch, ouch. The good news for Pantaleo is he was never pinned again on his way to subsequent fifth and third place finishes.

It is amazing how much better her arabesque has become through statistical analysis

Through my nephews. They were pretty good and it sucked me in. I like watching someone who is better at something than I will ever be at anything. And they qualified on that front. I also have a niece who is a ballerina who I follow closely, though she is getting close to retirement age.

Nope. Not in college. Not in high school. Not in junior high. Not in grade school. Come to think of it, I never wrestled.

Gambling Reinstatement
Wrestleknownothing replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
From the release: Effective immediately, reinstatement guidelines for student-athletes who wager on teams at their school — excluding their own team — will start at requiring one season of ineligibility and a loss of one year of eligibility. Student-athletes will also be required to participate in sports wagering rules and prevention education as a condition of reinstatement. Previous guidelines, as approved in June, prescribed permanent ineligibility for those cases. The adjusted guidelines may be applied to cases in which student-athletes are currently serving suspensions related to wagering on a different team at their own school that were reported on or after May 2, 2023. -
What Happened in 2006?
Wrestleknownothing replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
Sorry, forgot the color legend. Red is the number of pinfalls, green is the number of wrestlers who won at least one match by pinfall. -
Yes

@grogs84 reached out to me the other day and and asked me if I wanted a data set that contained every result from every match from every tournament from 1988 - 2021. Uhhhh, does a swimmer spit in the pool? So, if you like more of these data driven discussions make sure to throw a thank you his way. On the other hand, for those of you who were hoping I would run out of ideas and data, whoo boy, look out. On the same day our own @Husker_Du offered me a better version of the Big Board to use. Rather than use what is posted on Flo (a mishmash of when they were wise enough to have Willie do it and when they were not) I got the pure stuff, right from the source. I have both data sets hooked up straight to my veins at this point, and I am ready to roll. Not telling what is going to emerge from my fever dreams now. Thank you both, gentlemen.

2006 was the Year of the Pinfall. But I am not sure why. Any theories? And it happened across the board. Virtually all weights were up.

While I do not agree with his example, I do agree with his statement, as did the framers of the constitution. We don't have a pure democracy. The Senate exists as a check against purely representative government. It is there to specifically stop the many from strictly and always imposing their will on the few. Weren't you in the room where it happens?

Gable coming back conspiracy
Wrestleknownothing replied to Lunaticfringe's topic in College Wrestling
That part I get. But it only explains the decision to leave real wrestling for minor league pretend wrestling. It does not explain qualifying for worlds and then backing out in the eleventh hour. Nor does it explain coming back to NCAA's after the worlds bow out.
